Leeds United set for Elland Road boost

Leeds United are set for a major boost as exciting news emerges about Thorp Arch and about the club increasing the capacity at Elland Road.

What’s the story?

After Angus Kinnear initially revealed plans for the expansion of Elland Road back in October 2019 when Marcelo Bielsa’s side were celebrating their centenary year, it appears the Whites may finally get to see some significant improvements on their stadium capacity.

Leeds had originally planned to expand the capacity of Elland Road to 50,000 whilst also relocating the Thorp Arch academy to a former high school site close to the site of their stadium.

However, Leeds have now changed these plans as they look to expand Elland Road into a 55,000 seater stadium by expanding into the space at the Fullerton Park site next to the stadium.

This means that the Thorp Arch academy will remain in its current location and a community sports hub will now be built at the high school site.

A report from LCC’s director of city development to the council’s executive board said: “Following the promotion of LUFC to the Premier League and the club securing investment from the San Francisco 49ers’, the club have reviewed their stadium development ambitions and want to preserve their ability to deliver an expanded 55,000-seater stadium at Elland Road, as opposed to a 50,000 seat capacity previously agreed.”

Meanwhile, LCC leader councillor James Lewis added: “The fantastic return of Leeds United to the Premier League has proved to be a great boost to not just fans, but also the city as a whole.

“We remain committed to working with the club constructively in terms of any ambitions they might have in terms of increasing the capacity of Elland Road in the future, which is why following discussions, we agreed to look at what options could be available to move the proposed Parklife project from Fullerton Park to another location.”

Fans will be buzzing

At its current capacity of 37,792, Leeds have the 11th largest stadium in the Premier League, behind the likes of Everton and Aston Villa.

But the proposed increase at Elland Road to something around 55,000 would see them shoot right up that table, and virtually into the top-five, with Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium currently seating about 55,017 fans.

A bigger stadium doesn’t necessarily mean, or translate into success, but what it does do is send a major statement that the club mean business and are looking forward to establishing themselves as a real force.

It would be an indication that Leeds are serious about breaking up the Premier League’s ‘big six’ and getting into Europe, and that their ambitions on the pitch are being matched by their efforts off it.

Not only will Leeds fans have an even bigger opportunity to go see their team play given the increased capacity, but it would also prove to them that those at the club are doing everything in their power to take Leeds forward.

Whites fans will surely be absolutely buzzing at the latest development that the Thorp Arch academy won’t be moving and that there will be more seats in the expanded stadium instead.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are eyeing a move for a new Stuart Dallas…

Southampton handed Armstrong boost

Southampton’s hopes of signing Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong this summer have been given a huge boost after the Championship side reportedly lowered their asking price.

According to The Daily Mail, Tony Mowbray’s side will demand just £8m for the former Newcastle United man, with Southampton and Norwich City currently leading the race to sign him.

Previous reports have suggested that he could cost as much as £15m this summer but with the 24-year-old’s contract at Ewood Park set to expire at the end of next season, it seems as if the Lancashire side are keen to cash in rather than potentially losing him for nothing next summer.

The English striker enjoyed a superb campaign in the Championship last season, contributing 28 goals and five assists in 40 appearances in the second tier, averaging an excellent 7.15 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Considering this was more than Che Adams and Danny Ings would manage combined in the Premier League last season, you could definitely argue that Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to add a player of his firepower up front next season if he wants his side to avoid another relegation battle.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

The Austrian suggested earlier this year that Southampton would target players under £10m this summer and now that Armstrong’s asking price has seemingly been reduced, there is no excuse for Martin Semmens not to bring him to St Mary’s.

Mowbray was full of praise for Armstrong last season, saying:

“He’s a boy really, but his explosive pace at the top end of the pitch allows you to play both ways, to not be overly concerned if you’re pinned back around the edge of your box because one pass releases pressure to someone like (Harvey) Elliott to play the pass that he can hit just leaving it in the space for the speed and dynamic movement of Armstrong – it’s a devastating effect for the team.”

This certainly marks him out as the sort of striker Hasenhuttl would favour in his 4-2-2-2 system at Southampton next season, so now that he is available at such a cut-price, there seems little reason why he couldn’t end up at St Mary’s this summer.

ACB Chairman's team announced

Western Australian cricket selectors, in conjunction with the Australian Cricket Board, today confirmed the ACB Chairman’s XI to play England at Lilac Hill next Tuesday.

Western Australia Cricket Association15-Oct-2002WESTERN Australian cricket selectors, in conjunction with the Australian Cricket Board, today confirmed the ACB Chairman’s XI to play England at Lilac Hill next Tuesday. The match officially launches England’s Orange Test series tour of Australia for the 2002-2003 season.Former Test stars Kim Hughes, David Hookes and Wayne Clark have accepted invitations to play. The team is:Ryan Campbell, Michael Clark, Kade Harvey, Brad Hogg, Michael Hussey, Scott Meuleman, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Callum Thorp, Paul Wilson, Kim Hughes, David Hookes and Wayne Clark.A captain and vice-captain for the team will be named before the match.Former Test bowler Paul Wilson, 30, and Callum Thorp, 27, will be making their first appearances with a representative team since joining the Western Warriors senior squad.Wilson moved from South Australia for the new season. Thorp has been a prolific wicket-taker on the WACA club scene for several seasons.

Pundit not sure Hughes would start for Aston Villa - Exclusive

Aston Villa certainly don’t appear to be strapped for cash this summer even without selling Jack Grealish, and with the calibre of players they have been linked with already, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey isn’t sure if Will Hughes would start under Dean Smith.

Hughes has spent three seasons in the Premier League with Watford in the past and he failed to ever set the league alight with his highest WhoScored rating in the top-flight being 6.74, not something that screams European football.

That is likely going to be the aim for Villa next season but with Hughes being linked with a move, he would surely only be good enough for a rotation or cup game role, something that would not make sense for either club or player.

After being an integral part of Watford’s side earning promotion back into the Premier League, it would be a bizarre move to see Hughes throw away first-team football for a spot on Villa’s bench, as he would be unlikely be a regular starter, according to Howey who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“I think he’s a decent player but is he going to go in there and be in the starting XI? I’m not too sure given the players that are in and around their midfield.”

Hughes has always been a constant performer for Watford in both the Premier League and Championship and he appears settled but with just one year left on his contract, the Hornets may look to sell him on and generate some funds for this summer.

At the moment, Villa can boast options such as John McGinn and Douglas Luiz but if they manage to bring in James Ward-Prowse, there is surely no chance Hughes starts ahead of any of those options.

West Ham: Fans left livid by ExWHUemployee’s update on Declan Rice

Declan Rice has reportedly rejected two contract offers with West Ham, with both offers being below the weekly wage of Andriy Yarmolenko, according to ExWHUemployee.

This update comes after The Telegraph’s Matt Law reported that the West Ham midfielder has turned down two contract offers from the club.

Rice was an important member of David Moyes’ squad in the 2020/21 season, with the 22-year-old making 32 league starts from his 38 appearances in the Premier League.

West Ham finished sixth in the top-flight standings last term, and will be keen to build on that strong campaign heading into the new season, which gets underway on Sunday 15th August against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Rice has had interest from Chelsea in recent months, whilst Liverpool are also believed to be keen on landing his signature this summer, after this recent update on his future with West Ham.

The midfielder was labelled as ‘top drawer’ by Wolves’ all-time top goalscorer Steve Bull in an exclusive interview with Football Transfer Tavern.

Plenty of West Ham supporters took to social media after this update, with the majority being hugely frustrated.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below….

“We’re an absolute joke of a club. Good luck to him deserves more and better than this club. Would love to see him and go on and win titles.”

“Insulting. Should be the best paid player at the club. We’ve shaved about £600k a week off the wage bill last few years.”

“Get rid of Yarmalenko and Anderson that’s 200k per week saved and make Rice the highest earner. Simple solution. Get it done WHU.”

“Disgrace, its as if they almost want to upset him so he asks for a move. He should be the highest paid player at the club no question about it If they value him at £100 million pay then pay him accordingly.”

“Offer him what he wants.”

“Then good for him. Deserves to be our highest-paid player. Should be building a team round him.”

AAP28-Oct-2002PERTH, Oct 28 AAP – Western Australia had made a solid start in its first innings at lunch on day one of a three-day cricket tour match against England at WACA ground today. The home team lost Test opener Justin Langer in a rain-shortened opening session to be 1-48 with Scott Meuleman (21no) and Chris Rogers (4no) at the crease.England captain Nasser Hussain won the toss and sent the Warriors into bat on a pitch with a little bit of life in it.The WA openers safely negotiated the home team to 0-21 before a 45-minute rain delay. But shortly after resuming the innings captain Justin Langer was dismissed after a sharp catch in close by John Crawley.Veteran quick Andy Caddick (1-16) looked like he had found his line and length on the bouncy WACA pitch and was rewarded with Langer’s dismissal. He managed to move the ball back into the left-hander and the ball squeezed off an inside edge quickly to Crawley’s right.

Steve Cooper wants Fulham job

Steve Cooper is interested in taking over as Fulham’s new manager at Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claimed in a recent post on Twitter that the only thing holding up Fulham’s move to appoint Cooper is the compensation fee the Cottagers would have to pay Swansea City, a figure believed to be around £3m.

It was previously suggested that Shahid Khan was not willing to shell out this amount in order to land the 41-year-old, however, with Scott Parker’s departure from Fulham now being confirmed, the west London club’s owner faces a rather big decision on the matter.

When asked by a fan whether Cooper was interested in the job, as well as if Fulham would be willing to pay the fee for the Swans boss, Nixon said: “It’s down to the figure… that simple.”

Fans should be delighted

While it remains to be seen whether or not Khan will indeed go on to pay the £3m fee in order to appoint the Welshman as the club’s next manager, the fact that Cooper appears to be interested in taking over from Scott Parker at Craven Cottage is something that should delight the Cottagers fan base.

While Parker is a young and progressive coach in his own right, as well as having what would seem to be a bright future ahead of him in management, the argument could easily be made that the current Swansea gaffer is actually a step up from the 40-year-old.

Having developed as a coach in the Liverpool academy set up, before taking over the England U17 side and leading them to victory in the U17 World Cup back in 2017, Cooper has proven in his relatively short time at Swansea that he is more than capable of being a success in adult football too.

Indeed, the 41-year-old has rather remarkably guided a largely unfancied Swansea side to back to back top-six finishes in the Championship since taking over from Graham Potter at the Liberty Stadium back in 2019, on both occasions being unfortunate to meet Thomas Frank’s Brentford in the play-off semi-final and final respectively.

However, what makes this feat all the more impressive is that the Welshman achieved this with the sixth-youngest squad in the second-tier, demonstrating both his faith in and success with fielding youth prospects.

As such, if given the opportunity to take over a squad that boasts a considerable amount of Premier League experience, as well as a side that has a history of developing their own extremely talented home-grown academy products, the sky would appear to very much be the limit if Cooper were to be given a chance at Fulham.

In other news: Khan must ruthlessly axe “unbelievable” £21k-p/w flop, he’s let Fulham down for years
