Imagine him & Fofana: Leicester plotting move for "explosive" PL talent

Leicester City haven't quite been as active in the summer transfer market to date, compared to the other newly promoted outfits in Southampton and Ipswich Town, with just four new faces joining the King Power Stadium ranks.

That doesn't mean the Foxes aren't trying to get more bodies into the building, however, ahead of the Premier League season starting next weekend, with Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool being linked with a switch to Steve Cooper's men amongst other names.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

That isn't the only talent Leicester are looking at from the Reds though, with a deal in the works to try and get this promising Liverpool youngster in through the door to strengthen in attack also.

Leicester battling away to sign teenage gem

As per a new report by the Express, Ben Doak has now been given the green light to depart Arne Slot's men in search of first-team football, having been in and around the senior mix under the new Dutch boss this pre-season.

Brentford have entered the race for the electric 18-year-old's services now, knowing he is available for a loan move, with Leicester and Southampton also keen on adding the slick teenager to their respective squads to help in their quests to stay up in the Premier League after promotion.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

Leicester could well add another loan player to their roster from a team higher up their new division in the form of David Datro Fofana away from just snapping up Doak, with reports suggesting that the Foxes are leading the race for the fringe Chelsea centre-forward's signature.

This injection of youth could give Leicester something different ahead of some daunting league matches to come, away from the mainstays of Jamie Vardy and Co, with this potential new attacking duo eager to impress if they do both end up donning a Foxes jersey this campaign to follow.

What Doak can offer alongside Fofana

Fofana was a bright spark last campaign for Burnley, even as relegation loomed large for the Clarets, with four goals and one assist mustered up from 15 clashes, including this long-range bullet soaring in against West Ham United.

He could well give Leicester some much-needed depth up top then away from the aforementioned Vardy and Patson Daka, with the East Midlands club having waved goodbye to Kelechi Iheanacho this summer.

The time could well be right for Doak – who has been dubbed a "huge talent" by journalist Barry Anderson – to spread his wings and experience a formative loan spell, therefore, like Fofana managed at Turf Moor last campaign after joining Chelsea from Molde, with the 18-year-old showing flashes of his excellence this pre-season for the Reds.

In particular, his cameo against Real Betis stands out from the table above, with 100% of his attempted dribbles against the Spanish side successfully completed, alongside only two duels being lost from six registered.

Ben Doak

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the 18-year-old can hack the men's game week in, week out away from the odd appearance here or there in friendlies or in cup competitions, but the "explosive" ace – as he was once labelled by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – could excel if given time to adjust to his new surroundings at the King Power.

He would, much like Fofana, give sufficient competition to the likes of Stephy Mavididi – who himself is unproven in the top flight – after a fantastic campaign with the Foxes in the Championship saw him fire home 12 strikes.

Leicester winger Stephy Mavididi.

Cooper will know that having depth all over the pitch will really give his side an advantage in the battle to beat the drop, especially if injuries start stacking up high towards the latter stages of the gruelling 38-game marathon.

Therefore, even if Fofana and Doak aren't guaranteed starters every game if they do sign, they could play an important role still in survival being achieved and even more if Leicester take being back in the Premier League in their stride.

Misbah-ul-Haq praises Pakistan's top order, but wants more from rest of batting

Pakistan coach happy with Babar Azam’s progress as captain, says he’ll improve further with experience

Umar Farooq08-Apr-2021Pakistan had a clear idea of what they wanted from their middle order all through the ODI series against South Africa, but until Hasan Ali’s 32 off 11 in the final ODI they didn’t get it.That it was Hasan, a much-improved batsmen but essentially a lower-order player, who provided the kind of power-hitting Pakistan wanted from the men above him points to a problem essentially unresolved, leaving head coach Misbah-ul-Haq with answers to find.Pakistan’s top order made up for it, with a rich run of performances. Fakhar Zaman found his groove to end up as the leading scorer with 302 runs, including that 193. Babar Azam amassed 228 runs at 76, followed by Imam-ul-Haq’s 132 at 80.98. In all three games, the trio contributed but nobody in the middle order could build on their platform; not in making the chase more comfortable in the first ODI, not in providing Fakhar with a partnership in the second and not to build on a formidable start in the third ODI (until Hasan’s late, late burst). Asif Ali made 21 in two games, Shadab Khan got 46 in two, Faheem Ashraf made 17 in three, Sarfraz Ahmed 13 in one and Danish Aziz 12 in two.”Things we see going forward is that in our middle and lower-middle order we need consistent runs, as well as power so that you can score big runs,” Misbah said, a day after Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1. “These days 325 isn’t a safe total and we have seen that in the last two games when 320 felt less. So 330 and 350 are just normal, [so] it’s necessary to have a capacity in your middle and lower order. The way the top order is setting the innings up, that needs to be capitalised on for a big finish. There is a simple and clear method in white-ball cricket, to put on 200 runs in T20s and 350 in ODIs and that’s the demands of the time.”It’s not like you have to go wild and can only do that by slogging, but conditions, rules, and pitches these days allow you to score the bulk of runs with proper cricketing shots. All you have to do is utilise the 50 overs at the fullest and 330 runs will come easily, which is a competitive score. That’s the way forward and pattern we have to follow.”The ODI series win on South African soil is Pakistan’s second in recent years, and Australia are the only other team with two series wins in South Africa. Misbah, coach now, was captain the first time it happened, in 2013. But he played down the achievement and looked ahead to his next goal of winning more often in overseas conditions, with England his next target.”Whatever you achieve, it isn’t your final destination,” Misbah said. “In the bigger picture, with an extensive goal, every team playing in the world wants to sit in the top three positions in every format. The target is to keep on evolving and keep winning from one series to another. We have a series against England in England before the T20 World Cup, so that is the next step: to do well and win overseas. It is something that always gives you belief and confidence.”With every successful step, like winning here in South African conditions, it gives you enough to get better going forward. The important positive is the way our current lot in the top order is playing in these conditions and the biggest plus is our fast-bowling battery is outstanding.”On Azam as captain, Misbah felt he is still learning: “For a captain, it’s really important to lead from the front. He just goes in and controls the game. In the first ODI, South Africa did their best to attack him with Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje but the way he counter-attacked gave self-belief and confidence [to him as a captain]. All this helps him in decision-making and improves his overall ability.”Though he doesn’t have much experience as captain, this performance will allow him to get better. The way he has worked on his game in white-ball cricket or even Tests shows he is a good learner. He has cricketing sense and with more experience as captain, he will definitely improve his strategic moves.”

Celtic could unearth O’Riley 2.0 in swoop for "phenomenal" £7m+ gem

The summer transfer window officially slams shut for business on Friday and Celtic do not have much time left to complete their incoming and outgoing business.

Brendan Rodgers is yet to make an outfield signing of a player who was not a part of his squad from the 2023/24 campaign, as Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo have joined on permanent deals after their loan spells in Glasgow.

He has also brought in two goalkeepers – Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel – to replace Joe Hart, who retired at the end of last season after three years at Parkhead.

To date, though, there have not been any outfield players to improve the squad that ended last term as the Scottish Premiership and SFA Cup champions.

There could be movement in the final days of the summer transfer window, however, as one of Rodgers' stars looks set for a move away from the club.

Attacking midfielder Matt O'Riley is the subject of interest from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, who are reportedly set to sign him for a deal worth up to £30m.

His exit from the Scottish side would be a big blow for the club after his terrific performances at the top end of the pitch throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Why losing Matt O'Riley would be a huge blow

The Denmark international has been a consistent performer for the Premiership champions and has proven himself to be an influential figure on the pitch since his move from England in 2022.

Ange Postecoglou swooped to sign the young whiz from League One side MK Dons in January 2022 for a reported fee of £1.5m, which means that Celtic would make a gigantic profit on him if they cash in for more than £25m.

He produced four goals and three assists in 16 matches during the second half of that season, before going on to register three goals and 12 assists in 38 league games during his first full campaign in Scotland.

The left-footed magician then exploded under Rodgers last season by showcasing his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals on a regular basis for the Hoops.

O'Riley registered 18 goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances from a central midfield position in the Premiership for Celtic as they won the division.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old talent was the club's most influential figure at the top end of the pitch when it came to scoring and creating goals in the top-flight.

No player provided as many goals, assists, big chances created, or key passes as O'Riley did in the Premiership for Celtic, which illustrates how important he was to the team.

Whilst the Bhoys may look to replace him with an immediate first-team addition, like LAFC's Mateusz Bogusz, Rodgers could also land a future star who could be developed into the next O'Riley at Parkhead.

Celtic's interest in teenage sensation

Earlier this month, Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt claimed that Celtic are one of a number of teams interested in signing Hammarby youngster Bazoumana Toure.

The report stated that the Hoops have sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old talent in action over the summer as they consider a move for the gem.

It was also revealed that Crystal Palace, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on the Ivorian ace, which suggests that there could be strong competition for his signature from major leagues in Europe.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that it would take an offer of more than £7.3m to tempt Hammarby into cashing in on their starlet before the end of the window.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Celtic, Palace, Frankfurt, or Leverkusen are willing to offer £7m+ to land the Ivory Coast international to bolster their respective squads over the coming days before Friday's deadline.

Selling O'Riley to Brighton for £30m could free up some funds for the Hoops to play with and Toure could come in as a future star for the Scottish giants.

Why Celtic should sign Bazoumana Toure

The 18-year-old is an up-and-coming talent who could be developed into a top-quality player for Celtic in the years to come, which means that they could invest in him at £7m+ in the hope that he is worth £30m or more in the future.

He would not be a like-for-like replacement for O'Riley but the teenage whiz is another left-footed attacking midfielder who has the potential to contribute with goals and assists.

Whilst the Danish ace typically operates in a central midfield role, with a license to get forward into attacking positions in a dominant Celtic side, Toure is a left-sided player who has also been deployed as one of two number tens in behind a centre-forward with Hammarby.

The Ivorian sensation, whose form was hailed as "phenomenal" by video scout Elijah Michiels, has enjoyed a strong start to his first-team career in the 2024 Allsvenskan season so far.

As you can see in the table above, Toure has provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from an attacking midfield position, whether that has been wide left in a three or centrally in a two behind a striker.

At the age of 18, he has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and progress further and there would not be any immediate pressure for him to perform at Parkhead, given that he has yet to prove himself outside of Sweden.

Rodgers could bring him in as a long-term project and look to help him improve on the training pitch over the months and years to come, to develop him into O'Riley 2.0 as another left-footed midfielder who can score and create goals on a consistent basis.

Jofra Archer will not be rushed back to fulfil IPL contract, Kumar Sangakkara says

Team director admits Archer’s fitness issues had tempted Royals to consider their options ahead of the IPL auction in February

Andrew Miller11-Apr-2021Rajasthan Royals will take a long-term view on Jofra Archer’s fitness – for England as well as for the franchise – and not seek to rush him back to action simply to fulfil his IPL contract, according to their team director Kumar Sangakkara.Archer’s involvement in this year’s tournament is set to be decided later in the week, after he underwent surgery to remove glass fragments from his hand following an accident involving a fish-tank at his home in Hove in January. That operation was carried out while Archer was also undergoing treatment for a long-term elbow injury, having required cortisone injections to get him through England’s five-match T20I series against India last month.Related

Rajasthan Royals' flexibility offers chance at redemption

Jofra Archer likely to miss first half of IPL 2021

And while Sangakkara admitted that Archer’s fitness issues had tempted the Royals to consider their options ahead of the IPL auction in February, and terminate his £800,000 contract ahead of next year’s mega-auction, his pre-eminence as a T20 cricketer persuaded the franchise to give him the time he needs to get back to his best.”It was a tough decision,” Sangakkara said. “The injury concern was flagged up going into the auction but he was playing excellently for England. So the chances of him playing in the IPL from the start and being managed by the experts was realistic. But we have contingency plans in place now and no risks will be taken.

“It’s such an important part of the current complex circumstances – of living in a bubble, training there, and not having access to your regular support structures and families. Keeping your players relaxed, interested, calm and happy is something that every franchise takes very seriously.”Kumar Sangakkara

“We are certainly hoping that he will be available for some part of the IPL,” Sangakkara added. “Not having him at the start is a big blow for us, because a lot of our planning is centred around his availability, and such last-minute injury concerns do affect any side, especially if it’s a player of the quality of Jofra.”But it’s very important that Jofra gets fit, not just for the IPL, but importantly for his international career. He needs to be in a very good space with his body, and mentally, when he does come here, so we’re all waiting to see how the assessment goes. And once the assessment is done, we’ll know more.”Archer was named as the IPL’s MVP at the last tournament in the UAE in November, after claiming 20 wickets at the impressive economy of 6.56. Assuming he is cleared to fly out to India in the near future, the eight-day quarantine period on arrival will eat further time out of his availability for a tournament that is set to conclude on May 30.”We have to be concerned about him as a player because his career is long-term and is not restricted to just one season and the IPL,” Sangakkara added.”His value to world cricket and to England cricket is part of our decision and we will be guided by the experts in English cricket who look after Jofra. It’s not something we look at selfishly and we take a holistic view of how important Jofra is.”Archer’s mental well-being will be a further consideration, as and when he does return to fitness, given the long periods he has spent in bio-secure environments since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. England’s management factored rest and rotation into their selections for the tours of Sri Lanka and India this year, and Sangakkara said that an open-door policy would be in use at Rajasthan as well.”It’s such an important part of the current complex circumstances,” he said. “Of living in a bubble, training there, and not having access to your regular support structures and families”Keeping your players relaxed, interested, calm and happy is something that every franchise takes very seriously. Rajasthan’s is a policy of treating players as people first. We take a lot of pride in getting to know our players, understanding them and supporting them, not just in terms of IPL cricket, but their overall wellbeing.”Watch the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL exclusively live on Sky Sports Cricket and NOW.

The Spain international will wear Arsenal's number 23 shirt and could make his Premier League debut against Brighton, with manager Mikel Arteta expressing his delight at Merino's arrival.

“Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility," said Arteta on signing Merino.

"He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now. Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality.

“As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”

Arsenal have also reached a verbal agreement to sign Neto from Bournemouth as a potential replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, according to Fabrizio Romano, but the move will only happen if they can't agree a deal for Joan Garcia of Espanyol.

'The world stops a little bit' – emotional Tim Seifert recounts Covid-19 experience

Tim Seifert breaks down as he talks about his battle with Covid

“The world stops a little bit,” a visibly emotional Tim Seifert said as he recounted his experience of testing positive and then being treated for Covid-19 in India earlier this month.Seifert, the only overseas player to test positive during IPL 2021, has since recovered and is currently serving his isolation period at a hotel in Auckland after flying back from Chennai, where he was for around two weeks.”That was the toughest time, getting told that I have Covid,” Seifert said during a media interaction on Tuesday. “The world stops a little bit. I couldn’t think what was next. That’s the scary part. You hear about the bad things, I thought it was going to happen to me. It was tough.”Related

Could Sri Lanka potentially host the remainder of IPL 2021?

When and where can IPL 2021 be rescheduled to?

With the IPL postponed indefinitely after 29 matches in early May following a number of positive cases in some of the team bubbles, Seifert was all set to return home with the other members of the New Zealand contingent. They were flown to Delhi on a chartered flight after returning negative tests on May 6. But Seifert tested positive when another test was done the next day, prior to their flight to New Zealand.”I had a tiny cough, at the time I thought it was just a bit of asthma,” he said. “My heart sank straightaway, really (when the test came out positive). I just went up to my room while everything kind of got sorted out, what were the processes next.”Reality hit him hard when the rest of the New Zealanders, who had cleared their tests, left India. But, the fact that he had an exciting few months to look forward to after his recovery, helped him cope with the situation.”You only really hear about the bad things – watching the media or talking to people”•AFP/Getty Images”That was kind of when it sunk in, when everyone left and I was the only overseas player left in India, that’s when it got real for me,” he said. “Once a few days had gone by, everything had kind of calmed down a little bit, the New Zealand boys had gone, then I just knew it was a time of getting through it, looking at the positives – getting married in two months, so that’s exciting.”And I think my fiancée is quite happy that I’m back a bit earlier so I can help planning for that. So you had to look at the positives, it was just the tough time of the unknown really.”

“It was the first time being involved for me in IPL in India. They [McCullum and Fleming] had all the connections. They were the closest guys other than the players that I felt comfortable talking to about the situation. They were there for me.”Tim Seifert

India has been hit by a massive second wave of the virus, with the surge in cases leading to a shortage of beds and oxygen in hospitals across the country. The depressing updates made it worse for Seifert, but opening up to people about it helped him, he said. As did not having to actually spend time in a hospital.”The news is all about a lack of oxygen, you don’t know if you’re going to be in that situation,” he said. “It’s just the whole unknown of what Covid is, how you’re going to react to it. I was healthy. I had the energy to get out of bed. I was happy with the situations and plans.”One of the toughest bits on being told I had Covid was you only really hear about the bad things – watching the media or talking to people. It’s always the negative side of it. But a lot of people that have got over it, talking to people that have had it helped me as well.”I’m feeling good. Lucky enough through the few weeks now, feeling good the whole way through. On the whole, physically and mentally feeling good. It’s been tough some days being in quarantine. Been in a hotel room about 25 days straight, that has had its toll sometimes mentally.”Seifert could barely hold back his tears as he thanked Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum and the Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming, both New Zealanders, for staying in touch with him and helping him through their network of friends in India.”It was the first time being involved for me in IPL in India. They [McCullum and Fleming] had all the connections. They were the closest guys other than the players that I felt comfortable talking to about the situation. They were there for me,” he said. “It definitely was hard and I couldn’t thank Brendon and Fleming enough, they made everything a lot easier.”Making sure things would be put in place and the KKR, the CSK support staff, management, CEO of KKR, they made life easy for me to know that everything would be alright and when that time was to come home, they would do everything to get me home safely and on time.”

Hasan Ali's personal matter resolved, available for rest of PSL 2021

He will not have to quarantine since he didn’t leave the PSL bubble

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2021Islamabad United have received a boost in their challenge for the PSL title this season with the news that fast bowler Hasan Ali will, after all, be available for the rest of their campaign. Ali was due to fly back on Sunday evening to attend to a personal family situation in Pakistan but decided against it after the matter was resolved.”I was going through a personal family issue, which has been resolved thanks to my wonderful wife,” Ali said in a statement. “She assured me she will take care of it and wants me to concentrate on my cricket and my career. Hats off to such a wonderful partner. She has always stood by me through the hardest times and after consulting with her, I have decided to stay on with Islamabad United for the remainder of the PSL 6.”Two-time winners United moved to the top of the table on Sunday evening after a convincing, come-from-behind win over Lahore Qalandars. United were 20 for 5 at one point before recovering to 152 for 7, thanks to 75 from Asif Ali and 49 from Iftikhar Ahmed. Their bowlers then blew apart Qalandars as Musa Khan, Shadab Khan and Fawad Ahmed induced a collapse from 86 for 2 to 100 for 9.Despite missing a game, Ali is United’s top wicket-taker this season – and fifth in the league – with 10 wickets. His PSL returns have been in line with his performances since he returned to cricket this season after a series of injuries derailed his career. He was the highest wicket-taker in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy where he also led Central Punjab to the final (which ended in a historic tie). He then took a ten-wicket haul against South Africa in his second Test back and has since picked up wickets in all formats on Pakistan’s tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe.Since Ali didn’t leave the bubble, he will not need to re-enter and undergo quarantine. United are scheduled to face defending champions Karachi Kings on Monday.

'I jumped at it' – USMNT legend Jozy Altidore on his motivation to invest in the Buffalo Bills, and reflections on his soccer legacy

Why Altidore joined Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady in buying a stake in the NFL team, and how he views his USMNT legacy

Jozy Altidore's journey to becoming part-owner of the NFL's Buffalo Bills actually started in Salt Lake City – when he was still playing.

Real Salt Lake started to put out feelers for a potential franchise sale, and Altidore, who was then playing for Toronto FC, was intrigued. He says that he tapped into his network and coalesced a group of investors to see what the viability of the move was. While he says that he was able to find a willing team to help support his vision, the move ultimately didn't go through for reasons that weren't disclosed.

"[The potential sale] didn't happen, but that's where I kind of fell in love with the process," Altidore explained to GOAL. "I thought 'I'd love to do this, this is something I want to be a part of.'"

RSL would ultimately be sold to David Blitzer, one of the owners of the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace, and Ryan Smith, owner of the Utah Jazz, for a reported $400 million in 2022. Undeterred, Altidore continued to pursue a chance at buying ownership into an MLS club (something he remains very interested in), especially once he stopped playing in 2022, but he also continued to grow his investment portfolio and network.

That would ultimately lead him into the most lucrative sports league in the world.

"[When] the opportunity came about at the NFL, obviously I jumped at it," Altidore said. "I'm really fortunate that I did that because I haven't looked back since."

When it was first reported that Jozy Altidore would be joining an investment group – including NBA Hall of Famers Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady – for a stake in the Buffalo Bills, the reaction was:

After all, the Bills are currently valued at $5.09 billion. McGrady and Carter, cousins with a well-documented bond, earned a combined $335 million in NBA contracts. By contrast, Altidore, who made $42 million on the pitch according to Sportrac, didn’t seem to have an obvious connection to the two basketball legends. But the person who brought these men together was Derrick Heggans.

With the NFL aiming to diversify its ownership ranks, Heggans – the Founder and CEO of Shepard Park Sports Properties – was brought in by the league to identify a racially diverse group of investors. When Bills majority owners Terry and Kim Pegula decided to open up their franchise, Heggans became a key facilitator. The partnership made sense, especially given the Bills' ongoing effort to strengthen ties with nearby Toronto. Carter and McGrady became icons while starring for the Raptors, while Altidore helped Toronto FC secure its first MLS Cup title in 2017.

"These three men are superstars in the Southern Ontario region," Terry Pegula said in an interview with Good Morning Football. "It's nice to bring people like that into our organization and help us gain more respect with our friends to the north."

For Altidore, Heggans' vision and ability to build connections left a strong impression. The introductions between the three former Toronto stars were made during a visit to Buffalo.

"That's where I got to meet everyone in person," Altidore said. "We had talked a bit offline, but to go there and experience it together was important. From there, we all looked at each other and were like, 'Man, this is really cool. Let's continue to look into this and try to complete it.' And that's where it all solidified, and we started really working on it."

If there was another surprise in Altidore's involvement, it was soccer's traditionally insular investment culture. Players and high-profile figures typically invest within their own sport. The playbook is clear – build a career in soccer, then funnel resources back into the game. So while former NFL stars such as Tom Brady and J.J. Watt invested in English clubs abroad, and the NBA's James Harden holds a stake in the Houston Dynamo, the reverse rarely happens.

Then consider another layer: Altidore is the son of two Haitian immigrants. His presence in NFL ownership circles breaks new ground.

"I just did a media scrum this morning, and somebody asked the question, 'What other Black Haitian-American soccer players are in NFL ownership?' And I thought it was a trick question," Altidore said with a laugh. "It put me on the spot. And I was like, 'I don't know.' She was like, 'Yeah, I think you're one of the only ones, if not the first one.'"

"That's really cool to me. Having played this game and been a part of so many firsts as a soccer player, as an American player, to now take that past the field and kind of do a little bit of that in business – that's special."

It's something he hopes to impart to more U.S. national team players.

Altidore admitted his interest in investing took some time. As a young player, he shied away from fully diving in – letting others he hired invest for him. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the legendary U.S. striker decided to take a different approach: he wanted to be more hands-on.

"I've taken on way more responsibility because, in a weird way, I've found a passion for it because I really enjoy it," Altidore said. "I really enjoy working with companies and founders and incubating with companies… It's like being on a team in a different way."

Altidore believes some of his success has come from the discipline and regimented experience that soccer players go through. Having now seen several investments succeed and being a part owner of an NFL team, Altidore is hoping to get two of the USMNT's biggest stars, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic, to follow in his footsteps.

"I've been in Weston's ear, Christian's [ear]. The moment I met them, I've been in their ear about investing," Altidore said before jokingly adding, "It's probably in one ear and out the next because I remember being that age."

Still, it's something Altidore continues to reinforce.

"I try to kick Weston's butt every time I see him about making sure he's taking advantage of investing and meeting people, building relationships," Altidore said. "I look at those guys as next up to do whatever they want, and I'd love to assist them… Because it's a wonderful thing if you nourish that and do it early on."

"When you play soccer, most people, I don't think, understand this: you're able to build relationships with people all around the world because they all have watched you play at some point, in different competitions, clubs, or representing your country. So there's a uniqueness that you can have as a footballer in the investment world, in the relationships world, and you have to curate that."

When Altidore was announced as one of the new part-owners of the Bills, he emphasized his fandom as motivation to join.

"It's a dream come true because I genuinely got to watch that team grow through good and bad, and watch their popularity grow in the Northeast," Altidore said.

But how? Altidore was born in New Jersey, raised in Boca Raton, Florida, and started his professional career as a teen as a member of the New York Red Bulls – who then played at Giants Stadium. None of that screams Orchard Park, NY. Yet, it was Altidore's time in The Six that would start his love of the Northern New York franchise.

The striker kept seeing Bills signs everywhere – moreso than the local CFL Argonauts. Although it was difficult for him to attend games, Altidore's friends would randomly take buses to Buffalo. On WhatsApp, he'd get videos of sub-freezing games, legendary tailgates, and fans jumping on tables.

"I was like, 'I can't go jump on tables because I'm here to play soccer, so that's not a good look,'" Altidore said with a laugh.

It would take Altidore years to finally see a Bills game in Buffalo. When he finally did, this September in their win against Jacksonville, he was hooked.

"I am an asset to them in any way they need," he said.

As for going to games in January and jumping on tables?

"Maybe," Altidore said. "I'm inactive and not playing, so maybe one day absolutely."

AFPWhat's next for Jozy?

Altidore alluded to it, but his career unceremoniously came to an end when his contract concluded with the New England Revolution.

Some of that was by choice. He is married to tennis star Sloane Stephens and resides largely in Boca Raton. Yet, despite previously stating he wouldn't want to move his family, he admits the door is still open to a return to playing.

"My wife is a world-class athlete, and still at the very prime years of her career. So you know, I wanted to be conscious of that and everything else in my life, and so it just didn't feel right at that time," he said. "But you never know. You never say never in life, you know, and I love the game. I'm still in great shape, so who knows what the future can hold."

Whether or not Altidore stays "inactive" as he terms it, at times it almost appears as if his accomplishments aren't as celebrated as say Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard or Brian McBride, but they probably should. He is third all-time in USMNT goals at 42 – top at his position of striker – and ninth at all-time appearances at 115. Despite all of that, he's never had a proper sendoff by either US Soccer or its fans.

Stu Holden, a former national teammate of Altidore, believes the striker is paired with Michael Bradley as part of the fans' ire when it comes to the U.S. missing the 2018 World Cup.

"Jozy is one of the top three or four all-time leading goal scorers for the U.S.? I think what happened for those guys, in terms of a legacy perspective, is that the fans, most recent memory of them playing for the national team was not qualifying for the World Cup, and that was such a monumental and catastrophic event that they were leaders and big players on that team and experienced players," Holden told GOAL. "And I think because they were playing in MLS as well, they drew a big part of the brunt of that. I remember for that whole year after they played every game in MLS, they were getting booed by the away fans, and every time Jozy or Michael touched the ball."

While both were a part of that downturn, both also experienced incredible success. Altidore chooses to focus on that instead.

"On every team or generation and we had our generation, you had the heroes and you have the villains. So, you know, that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes," Altidore said. "I know Michael doesn't mind it either. I think if you ask him to the biggest thing is, when people watched you, when you played against some of the biggest players in the world, what were you able to do? What did they think of you after the game? And when you're able to do that in the national team shirt and have big wins against some of the best players [in the world]….That's what sticks out.

He playfully added, "For me, I could shoot the sh*t with some of the biggest players in the world, and talk about nights where I bested them. So for me as a soccer player, and that's the biggest joy you can have."
