Guilherme Arana, lateral do Atlético-MG, recebeu vaias.

BRASIL LUTANDO, MAS EM ‘CLIMA’ DE FLAMENGO x VASCO

Pouco a pouco, vieram oportunidades.

Shakib Al Hasan is staying back in South Africa to play the third ODI in Centurion on Wednesday, after initially deciding to return home where several of his family members, including his children, are in hospital due to various illnesses. Khaled Mahmud, the Bangladesh team director, said Shakib changed his mind on returning to Dhaka on Monday, but is likely to do so after the March 23 match.Mahmud said that for the last few days, Shakib had been discussing with his family back home whether to leave the tour or not. The BCB booked a ticket for his return on Monday, but hours later, Shakib decided to stay back.”A number of his family members are sick so he is in hesitation,” Mahmud said, from Centurion. “He is speaking to his family about whether he needs to return to Dhaka. We have had to book a few tickets for him in the last few days. We booked a ticket today as well, because he was supposed to leave today.”But Shakib turned it down himself. He will return after playing [the third ODI]. Definitely, he was supposed to return home, which Jalal (Yunus, chairman of the BCB’s cricket operations committee) said earlier in the day. But shortly afterwards, Shakib decided that he will leave after playing (the third ODI).”Mahmud praised Shakib for putting the Bangladesh team before his family’s emergency. He said Shakib was really up for the series decider on Wednesday.”It is a family situation, which is important for everyone. Otherwise he was very intense from the start of the tour. Very serious about playing. He was play-of-the-match in the first game. He wants to win the series for Bangladesh.”He also knows that we will have a tough time making a combination without him. It is very pleasant that he is making such a big sacrifice for the Bangladesh team. I am hopeful that everyone becomes normal in his family. He will decide after the third ODI now.”Bangladesh and South Africa are locked at one-all going into the third ODI in Centurion on Wednesday. The visitors won their first match against South Africa in their backyard in the first ODI on March 18, with Shakib’s 77 a pivotal performance. It also won him the Player-of-the-Match award.Given his mother and two of his children are among the family members who are hospitalized, Shakib is unlikely to stay on after the March 23 game.GMT 1145 This copy was updated. It was initially reported, as per BCB’s operations team, that Shakib was ready to return to Bangladesh.

Pep must banish Grealish & Doku to unleash Man City’s £153m duo

Manchester City host Manchester United in the derby on Sunday afternoon, and it’s frighteningly difficult to determine who will come out on top.

This is new territory for Pep Guardiola’s usually invincible outfit, who have lost seven of their past ten matches in all competitions and claimed just one victory in that timeframe.

Having lost against Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, it’s pretty clear that this has turned into a crisis, and Pep must ensure that he ditches Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish for the Red Devils clash.

Why Guardiola must drop Doku & Grealish

Grealish has now gone 44 matches without scoring a goal for Manchester City, though has found a bit more success than he has had since being moved into midfield across his past few matches.

This has been done to bring a semblance of control back into the Man City engine room, uncharacteristically devoid of its typical inspiration, but Grealish still isn’t the answer and made just one tackle against the Old Lady.

Writing in their post-match player ratings, The Manchester Evening News could only provide Doku with a 5/10 score, criticising the Belgian for struggling to get involved in the flow of the match.

michael-olise-jeremy-doku-liverpool-opinion

The electric-paced winger brings plenty to the table but still struggles to hit a vein of potency that City need in their current predicament.

It’s clear that Guardiola needs to make a few changes from the team that failed to turn the Champions League campaign back on track in midweek, and for that reason, Phil Foden and Matheus Nunes must step in for the aforementioned strugglers.

Why Pep must unleash Phil Foden & Matheus Nunes

Foden, 24, has yet to score in the Premier League this season, only starting six times due to injuries and disruption – recently missing a short period due to bronchitis.

Real Madrid were even sniffing around last summer following Foden’s awe-inspiring campaign, but were dissuaded by City’s response: that he would cost well in excess of £100m.

He’s still one of the finest players in England, and must indeed be unleashed with Nunes for the derby. The versatile Portuguese, who signed from Wolves for £53m in 2022, has been one of the better performers over the past several months and should take Grealish’s place in the middle of the park, bringing more completeness.

He showed that he can be the all-encompassing player that Pep needs to take control of things against Feyenoord.

As you can see, Nunes can make an impact when he is placed in the centre of the park, proving to keep possession versus Feyenoord while unleashing a stream of key passes and bringing a combative element besides.

His dynamism could work well with Foden, who would find both creative supply and defensive security in the Portugal international.

While it’s true that Foden hasn’t been at the races this season, the 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Year has a superabundance of quality within his grasp and must simply tap back into it.

After all, he loves playing against the Sky Blues’ arch-rivals, and might just find that Sunday’s contest is the launchpad that he needs to get his season up and running.

Corberan must now ditch West Brom star who earns even more than Maja

West Bromwich Albion will hope they can get back to winning ways in the Championship this coming Sunday after falling to a narrow 2-1 loss to Watford last time out.

Winning their next clash versus Bristol City at the Hawthorns would set them up nicely for two away days in quick succession before 2024 is out, with a tough tie against table-toppers Sheffield United closing out the busy year.

Even as the fixtures come thick and fast around this bumper Christmas period, Carlos Corberan will likely keep selecting Josh Maja to lead the line, who has more than turned around his Baggies career this campaign.

Maja's heroics at West Brom

Although he has fired blanks across his last five games in the tricky league, the Spaniard has continued to select the former Sunderland man, knowing he can rifle the back of the net with an effort in the blink of an eye.

After all, the clinical 25-year-old has only averaged a mere 26 touches per Championship clash this season, but still has a very impressive goal haul of ten from 20 games to boast about.

Even as his output in front of goal has dried up of late, he still managed to pick up an assist towards the start of the month when the Baggies valiantly rescued a share of the points versus the Blades, having linked up with assist king Tom Fellows well to level the game at 2-2.

Whilst Maja’s space in the side is understandably concrete, the same cannot be said for Grady Diangana anymore, who had started to fall way down Corberan’s pecking order even before his recent injury troubles popped up.

Diangana's future at West Brom

With his contract up next summer, the time could soon be coming for West Brom to have a conversation with Diangana about his future at the second-tier outfit.

Just glancing at his high wage in Corberan’s camp is enough to think a parting of the ways will soon happen, with the Congolese winger earning a steep £20.3k-per-week pay packet, which makes him a higher earner than even Maja who rakes in a surprisingly lesser £17k-per-week salary.

West Brom winger Grady Diangana.

At least with Maja, it’s been well-documented how excellent he’s been this season, whereas Diangana was struggling even before injury disaster struck for him in November.

Last season in the Championship, the ex-West Ham United attacker picked up a sublime seven goals and eight assists, but he has nothing to show for his efforts during a dismal 2024/25 campaign to date.

Looking at the table above, Diangana has suddenly become a reserve figure for the Baggies, with no goals and zero assists to shout about when he is unleashed into the action by Corberan.

Of course, the experienced forward hasn’t been helped by his luck with injuries – having now been absent since West Brom’s trip to Hull City last month – but his lack of game time hasn’t really impacted his side in their pursuit of promotion.

Once dazzling his adoring set of supporters with showboat-laden displays, with one of his West Brom teammates, Jed Wallace, even labelling him as “unbelievable” in the past, Corberan just isn’t that reliant on the 26-year-old to be a bright spark anymore, when you also consider he has Fellows and Mikey Johnston to call on down the channels.

This January could be the perfect opportunity for West Brom to cut ties with their loyal servant, therefore, before he is allowed to leave for nothing, managing to perhaps recoup a fee before going full steam ahead to try and return to the Premier League.

Brooke Guest and Leus de Plooy fifties make high-class Notts attack work for rewards

Nottinghamshire 22 for 0 trail Derbyshire 260 (du Plooy 57, Guest 51) by 238Half-centuries by Brooke Guest and Leus du Plooy helped Derbyshire total 260 all out on the opening day of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire, for whom leading wicket-taker Dane Paterson finished with 3 for 36.After being asked to bat first on a heavily green-tinged pitch, and facing a trio of international fast bowlers in Stuart Broad, James Pattinson and Paterson, Derbyshire will feel they could have done much worse, particularly after leading scorer Shan Masood – who still hopes to become the first player since Graeme Hick in 1988 to aggregate 1000 first-class runs before the end of May – suffered a rare failure.Australian former Test bowler Pattinson, his dander up after twice being hooked for six, bowled with real pace and there was plenty of aggression from Broad in the last of his three Championship appearances before an expected Test recall against New Zealand next month. On the down side for Derbyshire, they are without three senior bowlers, with Suranga Lakmal, Anuj Dal and Ryan Sidebottom all injured. Nottinghamshire began their reply with 22 without loss from three overs, all the runs off the bat being scored by Ben Slater.Pakistan Test opener Masood, whose seven previous innings included three centuries, two of them doubles, and only one score under 62, this time fell on 18, caught behind pushing at a ball from Pattinson that found a thin edge. His dismissal left him on 844 runs for the season, still with an outside chance to make history as the earliest to reach the magical 1000 in May, although he has only the second innings of this match in which to do it because the rest of the month is given over to the Vitality Blast. Were he to make 156 or higher he would better Don Bradman’s 1938 achievement of reaching the milestone by May 27.After Masood’s dismissal, Derbyshire slipped to 41 for 3 when Paterson removed Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen with consecutive balls. Godleman was caught at third slip before Madsen nibbled at one that left him late to be caught behind, yet new man du Plooy helped Guest steer a path to 89 for 3 at lunch, the latter miscuing Pattinson for six over the short boundary on the Bridgford Road side. After the interval, Guest completed a 68-ball half-century but was not able to build on it, losing his middle stump to a quick ball from Broad that deflected off his bottom hand. du Plooy followed Guest in losing his wicket soon after passing fifty, leg-before playing back to a ball from Steven Mullaney, but Derbyshire added 102 runs in the session.Alex Hughes, a late call-up after Dal turned his ankle warming up on the outfield, joined Guest in hooking Pattinson for six, off a no-ball to boot, having been dropped on 6 off Mullaney.Slater took a stunning boundary catch to deny former Derbyshire team-mate Luis Reece a half-century, before being given a rare opportunity to bowl his offspin and claiming his maiden Championship wicket with his first ball as Tom Moores stumped Alex Thomson. After the second new ball was taken, Hughes became a second victim for Broad when he was lbw to a full delivery but he and debutant Liam Hurt – the fast bowler on loan from Lancashire – had added 27 to secure a second batting point. Paterson and spinner Liam Patterson-White picked up the last two wickets.

Tom Cooper, the veteran Australian batter, is set to play his first ODI in nine years next week after being included in the Netherlands squad to play England in three World Cup Super League ODIs in Amstelveen.Cooper, 35, has made 41 appearances for the Netherlands across ODI and T20I cricket and was part of their squads for the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2014 and 2016 World T20s, but has not been involved in the set-up since the most recent of those tournaments. He was cut from South Australia’s contract list after the 2020-21 season and played seven games for Brisbane Heat with limited success in the 2021-22 Big Bash League, but his return is a boost to a young squad that has seen Ryan ten Doeschate, Stephan Myburgh and Tom’s brother Ben retire over the last nine months. The majority of the Netherlands’ county-contracted players are unavailable due to a clash with the T20 Blast. Shane Snater (Essex) and Fred Klaassen (Kent) are the two county-contracted players named in the squad, though may only be available for part of the series.Related

There is also a call-up for the uncapped Tim Pringle, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner who has played for New Zealand’s Under-19s. He is the son of Chris Pringle, the former New Zealand medium-pacer who also played for the Netherlands.”We are very pleased with the arrival of Tom Cooper, who brings with him a huge amount of experience,” Roland Lefebvre, the Netherlands’ high-performance manager, said. “In recent years, some important players of the Dutch national team have stopped. The availability of Dutch players employed by English counties is also limited.”The knowledge and experience, but also the mentoring role that Tom will have within the young Dutch national team, is of great value. Tom is available for the rest of the international fixtures.”Pieter Seelaar, who will captain the side, said: “After a very competitive series against the West Indies, we take on the reigning world champions England, taking a lot of positives from the matches against the West Indies into the upcoming series. In saying that, there are also areas we need to improve in order to be as competitive against England.”Tonny Staal is the only player to drop out of contention from the squad that played against West Indies earlier this month, losing 3-0 despite some competitive performances. The KNCB said that the 18-man squad would be trimmed to 15 at a later date.England named a strong 14-man squad earlier this month and are due to fly to Amsterdam on Tuesday morning ahead of the first ODI on Friday.Netherlands squad vs England: Pieter Seelaar (captain), Scott Edwards (wicketkeeper), Musa Ahmed, Shariz Ahmad, Logan van Beek, Philippe Boissevain, Tom Cooper, Aryan Dutt, Clayton Floyd, Vivian Kingma, Fred Klaassen, Ryan Klein, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Max O’Dowd, Tim Pringle, Vikramjit Singh, Shane SnaterFixtures: June 17 – 1st ODI, June 19 – 2nd ODI, June 22 – 3rd ODI (all fixtures at VRA, Amstelveen)

Man City could get Haaland firing again by signing Messi-esque £149m star

Manchester City got back to winning ways on Sunday, beating Leicester City 2-0 at the King Power.

Savinho, belatedly, opened his account for the club, on target in his 24th appearance in Sky Blue, before Erling Braut Haaland made the points secure in the East Midlands.

This though was just a second victory in 14 matches for the Citizens, moving the four-in-a-row champions back up to fifth, with Pep Guardiola himself admitting his team are “at risk” of missing out on next season’s Champions League.

With Guardiola having signed a new two-year extension back in November, Man City will need to undergo a major rebuild in 2025, so who will be top of incoming sporting director Hugo Viana’s wishlist?

Erling Braut Haaland's recent concerning form

After arriving from Borussia Dortmund, Haaland ripped up all the record books during his first two seasons at Manchester City.

Thus, despite the fact he’s currently the second-top scorer in the Premier League, behind only Mohamed Salah, this is considered a down-season for the Norwegian centre-forward, with the table below outlining why.

During his debut campaign, Haaland broke the single-season scoring record, netting 36 times, while his goals – xG figure of +7.6 made him the second-most clinical forward in the division, although he’s currently performing below his expected goals figure, having more shots-per-90 than ever before this season, with these yielding fewer goals.

So, could a high-profile edition help get Haaland back to his best?

How Jamal Musiala would improve Manchester City

As reported by Caught Offside earlier this week, Manchester City are interested in signing Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain also interested in securing his services.

The 21-year-old is being targeted as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, whose contract expires next summer, although the Bavarian giants are currently negotiating a new contract with Musiala, hoping to tie down their most prized asset until 2029.

That aforementioned report claims Musiala is valued at €180m (around £149m), which would more than treble Bayern Munich’s record departure, selling Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona in 2022 and Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United last summer, both for €50m (£42m).

Meantime, this would also smash Man City’s transfer record, the £100m splashed on Jack Grealish in 2021.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

So, would Musiala be worth this heavy investment? If anyone is, it’s got to be him.

Germany’s all-time most-capped player Lothar Matthäus compared his compatriot to Lionel Messi, exclaiming his delight that the “best player from the young English generation” chose to represent die Mannschaft.

Back in September 2022, during a UEFA Nations League fixture at Wembley, Musiala was in the very unique position of being booed by opposition fans due to the fact that he was facing his former nation; he previously represented England at youth level.

For his national team of choice, Musiala has scored seven senior goals to date, on target against Scotland, Hungary and Denmark during Euro 2024.

For Bayern Munich meantime, the youngster has a more than impressive 14 goals to his name already this season, coming in just 22 outings, breaking the deadlock inside 30 seconds as the Bundesliga leaders smashed RB Leipzig 5-1 in the final fixture before the winterpause.

Jamal Musiala

Having scored 16 and 12 goals across the previous two seasons, it’s easy to see why Martin Rogers of Fox Sports has described Musiala as one of the best players on the planet, so it would be quite the coup if Man City were able to secure his signature.

Indeed, it would also prove fruitful for that man Haaland, with the German superstar possessing that innate creative touch having laid on six ‘big chances’ in the Bundesliga this season. Such creativity is being lapped up by teammate Harry Kane at Bayern, with the England skipper – who has 11 joint goal contributions with Musiala – describing his club colleague as “fantastic to play with”.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The playmaker’s desire to wreak havoc in the final third – as shown by the fact that he ranks in the top 4% in Europe for touches in the attacking penalty area – could help to drag City closer to the opposition goal, thus enhancing the opportunity for Haaland score.

Such a youthful combination could certainly be tantalising one at the Etihad, if this marquee deal can be pulled off.
