Uncapped Carmichael, Mayes and McCarthy called up for ODIs against West Indies

Mark Adair will miss the ODI series as he recovers from injury but is expected back for the T20Is

ESPNcricinfo staff15-May-2025Ireland have called up the uncapped trio of Cade Carmichael, the top-order batter, and seamers Thomas Mayes and Liam McCarthy for the three-ODI series at home against West Indies later this month. Fast-bowling allrounder Mark Adair will miss the ODIs as he is still recovering from a knee injury suffered during the tour of Zimbabwe earlier this year, but is part of the T20Is that follow.Carmichael, Mayes and McCarthy were all part of Ireland A in their 50-over tri-series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A in the UAE last month, where Ireland lost the final to Sri Lanka, and are all part of the ODI team; McCarthy is also in the T20I set-up.Ireland have left out Gavin Hoey, Graham Hume and Morgan Topping from their last ODI squad, which toured Zimbabwe in February.Related

  • West Indies include Amir Jangoo, Jewel Andrew for Ireland, England ODIs

Carmichael is in form. He has scores of 107 and 86 for Northern Knights in the first two games of Ireland’s ongoing List A tournament, and made an unbeaten 75 against Afghanistan A in the UAE.Mayes picked up ten wickets in four games in the tri-series, and has six wickets in the domestic List A tournament so far, while McCarthy had seven wickets in the UAE and has four so far in the domestic competition.Hume, Neil Rock, Fionn Hand and Tim Tector, who were part of the T20I squad in Zimbabwe, haven’t been picked for the T20Is, while Ross Adair is back, having missed the Zimbabwe series owing to injury.”Cade Carmichael has been in the pathway for several years now. His talent, stroke play, and resilience were on full display for the Wolves in April, and his rise over the last couple of years is a real demonstration of how consistent performances – and his ability to adapt his game to conditions – have been recognised with an International call-up,” national selector Andrew White said in a statement. “In a similar vein, two seam bowlers – Liam McCarthy and Tom Mayes – have also been recognised for consistency and demonstrating the ability to step their game up a level at each time of asking.”Both players offer something different to the squad – Mayes with his height and accuracy, while McCarthy brings a slightly different dynamic to our attack and will certainly challenge the batters techniques.”This is the first time West Indies would be playing in Ireland since 2019. The three ODIs are on May 21, 23 and 25 in Clontarf, while the T20Is are scheduled for June 12, 14 and 15 in Bready.

Heinrich Klaasen's 39-ball 105* propels SRH to 278

Travis Head set the tone with a 40-ball 76 as SRH went on to post the third-highest ever IPL total

Sreshth Shah25-May-2025Heinrich Klaasen’s batting was the story of the first innings in Delhi. His breathtaking century – the joint-third fastest in IPL history – came in just 37 balls, a knock that left Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) needing 279 for victory.Klaasen’s innings was marked by nine sixes and seven fours. His 17-ball fifty, at a strike-rate of 300 – also his fastest in T20s – had already set the tone. From there, he showcased his ability to punish anything short or overpitched. Full balls were hammered straight down too, and he finished unbeaten on 105 off just 39 balls. Before Klaasen took over, Travis Head laid the foundation with a commanding 76 off 40 balls. Head was in superb touch, racing to his fifty in 26 balls and driving Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to 79 without loss in the powerplay. His strokes, combined with Abhishek Sharma’s 32 from 16 balls, ensured SRH capitalised fully on KKR’s inconsistent start, and by the eighth over, SRH had reached 109 for 1.The top four IPL scores all belong to Sunrisers Hyderabad•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

KKR’s bowlers never found a consistent length. Anrich Nortje and Vaibhav Arora were expensive early, while even Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy couldn’t stem the flow in the middle overs. Narine’s 13th over provided rare control, dismissing Head and conceding only a single – the only over without a boundary since the first over. But it was just a brief pause. Klaasen launched Narine for back-to-back sixes in his final over to bring up SRH’s 200 in the 15th over.Ishan Kishan added a crucial 29-ball 40, rotating strike smartly and finding gaps with minimal fuss. Klaasen kept attacking from the other end, with the pair bringing up a fifty partnership in just 20 balls.Aniket Verma added a final flourish in the last over with a four and a six in his six-ball 12 not out, ensuring SRH’s final-over push was just as decisive. Klaasen’s century arrived off the last ball of the 19th over, and SRH ended on a mammoth 278 for 3 – the third-highest total in IPL history. Nortje’s struggles summed up KKR’s night, conceding 60 runs in his four overs, while Varun Chakravarthy went for 54 in three overs.ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster gave SRH a 91% chance of victory at the halfway mark.

Alexis & the Arsenal stars who left to join bigger clubs

The Chilean has joined Manchester United, which makes him the latest in a long line of players to leave north London in search of trophies

Nicolas Anelka to Real Madrid | 1999

Nicolas Anelka followed Arsene Wenger into Arsenal in 1997, signing from Paris Saint-Germain at just 17 years of age. Wenger would use him sparingly during his first season in the Premier League, but an impressive second season and a prolific third saw him gain interest from Real Madrid in 1999.

Anelka made no effort to hide his intentions to leave Arsenal, and indeed England, admitting he had struggled to settle in London, before joining Real in a deal worth around £22 million.

Ashley Cole to Chelsea | 2006

A lot of Arsenal fans have still not forgiven Ashley Cole for the way in which he left the club. A graduate from the Arsenal academy, Cole was tipped to become the club captain having helped the Gunners to three FA Cups and two Premier League titles.

However, after nearly crashing his car in shock at being offered a new contract worth £55,000 per week, he left for London rivals Chelsea and enjoyed even more success. The left-back would win four FA Cups, a Premier League title, a League Cup, the Europa League, and in 2011-12 was part of the Blues side to lift the Champions League trophy.

Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City | 2009

Emmanuel Adebayor spent four seasons at Arsenal but failed to win a trophy, though he did pick up a place in the 2007-08 PFA Premier League Team of the Season, having struck 24 league goals in 36 games. Then, upon leaving for Manchester City, Gunners fans turned on the Togo international in a feud which would play out in front of those at the Etihad in 2009.

As well as being accused of stamping on Robin van Persie's face, Adebayor scored against his former club and ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling support, much to their anger. Adebayor would also go on to play for Tottenham, Arsenal's north London rivals.

  • Kolo Toure to Manchester City | 2009

Another player to build his reputation at Arsenal, Kolo Toure signed from local club ASEC Mimosas in 2002. The defender would go on to play well over 300 games for the Gunners and was a major part of the club's 2003-04 Premier League title campaign in which the Gunners remained unbeaten.

The trophies would soon disappear at Arsenal, however, and so would Toure, as he moved to Manchester City in 2009. Toure would have to settle for a bit-part role at the Etihad, though did pick up another Premier League winners' medal in 2011-12.

    10Bernd Leno – £22m

Bernd Leno became the most expensive goalkeeper in Arsenal's history when the Londoners acquired the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2018.

After a slow start to his Emirates career, Leno usurped Petr Cech as Unai Emery's preferred No.1 in the Premier League and now looks set for a lengthy spell as the Gunners' first-choice shot-stopper following the Czech's retirement.

    9Lucas Torreira – £26m

After a stellar 2017-18 season at Sampdoria, Lucas Torreira was courted by a number of top clubs during the summer transfer window, including Napoli.

However, Arsenal won the race for the Uruguay international's signature and the all-action midfielder has quickly endeared himself to the Emirates crowd with his tenacity and drive.

    8William Saliba – £27m

The acquisition of William Saliba was a particularly sweet success for Arsenal.

Not only is the teenage centre-half – who has been loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the 2018-19 campaign – considered one of France's most promising defenders, he also turned down the Gunners' bitter rivals, Tottenham, before agreeing to move to the Emirates.

    7Alexis Sanchez – £32m

Arsene Wenger splashed the cash to land the hard-working forward from Barcelona in 2014, spending £31.7m on the Chilean.

Over his time at the Emirates, Alexis netted 80 goals in 166 games for the Gunners before moving to Manchester United in a part-exchange deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan arrive in north London.

Neither move has worked out well.

    Too Good: Karl Toko Ekambi

While Vincent Aboubakar had dominated headlines heading into Saturday’s clash with The Gambia, it was Toko Ekambi who flourished to win the game for the Indomitable Lions.

The Lyon attacker netted two second-half strikes to seal a 2-0 success and take the hosts into a mouth-watering semi-final meeting with seven-time winners Egypt.

His latest brace at the finals takes him to five goals, outscoring everyone but Aboubakar.

    Too Bad: Vincent Aboubakar

The tournament’s top scorer went into Cameroon’s last eight fixture seeking another strike to become the first player in the competition’s history to score in his team’s first five games.

However, Aboubakar’s finishing was far from perfect on the day, missing a series of opportunities to add to his six goals at Afcon 2021.

Undoubtedly, Toni Conceicao will hope his frontman returns to form when they face Egypt in the semis.

    Too Good: Mohamed Salah

Despite Morocco being the fancied side owing to their performances hitherto the quarters, Egypt picked up a 2-1 comeback victory over the Atlas Lions.

Without Salah, it is hard to see how the Pharaohs will have found a way after falling behind after Sofiane Boufal’s sixth-minute penalty.

The Liverpool superstar equalised eight minutes after half-time and set up substitute Trezeguet in the first half of extra time.

Salah has now been involved in all but one of Egypt’s four goals in Cameroon and they will look to him to get the better of the Indomitable Lions on Thursday.

Rashford and Foden re-energise England: Winners, losers and ratings as Three Lions roar into World Cup last 16

Gareth Southgate gave the fans what they wanted by making changes to his starting line-up that inspired a rousing 3-0 win over Wales

Marcus Rashford is smiling again. And so are England.

After being tamed by the United States last time out, the Three Lions tore Wales to shreds in the second half of an ultimately facile 3-0 victory at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday night.

The fans had demanded changes after the dismal draw with U.S. on match day two and they got them, with Gareth Southgate bringing Phil Foden and Rashford into a misfiring forward line.

After the pair had switched flanks for the restart, oth players made a massive impact, with Rashford striking either side of a Foden tap-in to move level with Enner Valencia, Kylian Mbappe and Cody Gakpo at the top of the tournament's goalscorers' charts on three goals.

Southgate said afterwards that Rashford is "a different player to the one we had at Euro 2020" and it's impossible to disagree.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the winners and losers from a Rashford-inspired victory that sees a re-energised England progress to the knockout stage of Qatar 2022 as winners of Group B, meaning they will face Senegal in the last 16.

  • Getty Images

    The Winners

    Marcus Rashford:

One of the most endearing tales of redemption at this World Cup. Rashford has been through a lot over the past 18 months, including the recent loss of one of his close friends. And yet here he is, back in the England squad and a Golden Boot contender at Qatar 2022. Indeed, with most of the media attention fixed on Foden, the resurgent Rashford's claims on a starting spot were largely overlooked, even after he had come off the bench to produce a fine finish in the 6-2 rout of Iran. Now, though, it would be a huge surprise if the Manchester United forward isn't in the side to face Senegal. Rashford was England's one constant threat against Wales, with his pace causing all sorts of problems. Indeed, he'd already forced Danny Ward into one good save before he broke the deadlock with a fine free-kick early in the second half and then embarrassed the Wales goalkeeper again for his second. The little smile he shared with Southgate after his 76th-minute withdrawal said it all: Rashford has been revitalised. "Moments like this," he told the BBC afterwards, "it's what I play football for."

    Phil Foden fans:

Let's face it, there would have been uproar among England fans had Phil Foden not started here. They were already understandably enraged that the Manchester City star had been left on the bench for the duration of the bore draw with the USA. There were even suggestions that the England boss had some sort of personal issue with the Manchester City star. That was rubbish, of course. As Jack Grealish pointed out, there's always a clamour around the squad for someone to start. Southgate handled the situation well and was rewarded with a fine performance from Foden against Wales, with the 'Stockport Iniesta' causing chaos with his quick feet. Indeed, Foden didn't just score, he also won the free-kick from which Rashford made it 1-0 with one of his trademark surges towards the penalty area. Of course, the 22-year-old's supporters will argue that he should have been in the starting line-up all along. But, for now, all is calm, at least until the next selection row kicks off ahead of the Senegal game…

    England's options out wide:

Seriously, another starting line-up storm is already on its way. It's inevitable given the amount of quality players they have competing for two-to-three attacking roles. There will be pressure on Southgate to stick with this side against Senegal but it's worth remembering that Bukayo Saka was brilliant against Iran, Raheem Sterling is England's big-game player and Mason Mount… well, what manager doesn't want the Chelsea man on the field when both industry and innovation are required against a strong side? Southgate, then, faces more big calls on Sunday. Is it a problem that the manager doesn't yet know his best side? Perhaps. But let's look on the bright side here: at least he has a plethora of possible solutions. It's arguable that no other side in the competition has as many exciting options out wide.

    The Losers

    Harry Kane:

If there was one big negative on the night for England, it was the performance of their one world-class centre-forward. Granted, Kane grabbed an assist – his third of the tournament – after good work by Rashford, with the Spurs striker squaring the ball for Foden to score at the back post. However, if England are to win this tournament, they need Kane firing on all cylinders – and he's just not. Kane's hold up-play is good, his awareness of the runners around him is still there, but he still doesn't look like scoring. He left the field here having had zero shots and just one touch in the penalty area. Kane was replaced just over 10 minutes into the second half, which is just as well because he looks in dire need of a rest right now. Southgate will now be praying that Kane comes alive in the knockout stage, just as he did at Euro 2020.

    Senegal:

Having sealed their place in the last 16 with a dramatic win over Ecuador, Senegal's players would have enjoyed watching England's performance in the first half of this game. The Three Lions looked toothless. Again. However, Rashford's free-kick changed everything. After the deflating draw with the U.S., England would have been slated had they been held by a horribly limited Wales. Instead, the boo boys are back on their side again after a scintillating second-half showing that means they will go into Sunday's showdown with Senegal supremely confident of progressing to the quarter-finals.

    Gareth Bale:

Was this the end of Gareth Bale's career? If so, it was a desperately sad way for him to bow out, with the winger visibly irked by the attention of a cameraman at full-time. His frustration was, of course, understandable. The man who did so much to get Wales to Qatar was forced to watch on helplessly from the bench as his nation's hopes of qualifying for the last 16 were extinguished within six minutes of his injury-enforced withdrawal. Bale said afterwards that he will play as long as he can and as long as he's wanted. His compatriots will certainly be hoping he continues and we know that the love of playing for his country has been the only thing motivating Bale over the past year or so. However, it would not be at all surprising to see the 33-year-old walk away for two reasons: firstly, his long-standing injury issues; and secondly, the hard truth that it could be some time before this Championship-level Wales side qualify for another major international tournament.

    England Ratings: Defence

    Jordan Pickford (6/10):

A virtual spectator for most of this mismatch. Only called into action once.

    Kyle Walker (6/10):

Decent night's work. Got just over 56 minutes under his belt on his return from injury.

    John Stones (7/10):

His looping header from a corner was one of England's better efforts in the first half. The odd poor pass aside, he was his usual dependable self.

    Harry Maguire (7/10):

Surged forward just after the half-hour mark and tried his luck with a shot that went out for a throw. However, defensively, he was once again impressive, showing off good anticipation and timing.

    Luke Shaw (5/10):

Wasn't given much to work to do but he offered nothing going forward. His starting spot could be under threat, with Trippier an option on the left-hand side.

    Midfield

    Jordan Henderson (6/10):

As expected, brought plenty of purpose and passion after being recalled in place of Mason Mount, winning plenty of duels. But may not have done enough to hold onto his starting spot.

    Declan Rice (7/10):

His usual dependable self, protecting the back four well while at the same time keeping the ball moving.

    Jude Bellingham (7/10):

Always dangerous when he got a chance to run at players and get into the box. Looked the man most likely to make something happen before Rashford took centre stage.

Women's Champions League winners and losers as Chelsea go goal crazy while Bayern win in the 98th minute

Real Madrid vs Paris Saint-Germain was the headline fixture this week – but the chaos was delivered elsewhere on a crazy UWCL matchday.

It was going to take something special for the second round of games in the Women's Champions League group stages to better matchday one – and that's exactly what we got.

While everyone expected the fireworks to come from Paris Saint-Germain's trip to Real Madrid, it was St. Polten and Roma's seven-goal thriller that stole the show, before things again went wrong for reigning champions Lyon, while Bayern Munich came from 2-0 down to win in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Thursday was an emotional night for Zurich as the part-time Swiss team scored a wonderfully memorable goal in defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates, and there were statement victories for Chelsea and Barcelona – the latter featuring a strike that will surely win the UWCL's goal of the season award.

With plenty going on across the continent, here are GOAL's winners and losers from matchday two…

  • Getty

    WINNER: Real Madrid

Real Madrid might be in a 'group of death' this year but there was one silver lining to drawing PSG for a second successive season, in that they could be a yardstick for the progress the club has made in the past 12 months.

After losing 4-0 in Paris and 2-0 in Madrid last campaign, their home fixture on Wednesday produced a goalless draw. It was a welcome draw not only in that it was an improvement, but because of how much of a bad point it was for their visitors.

PSG lost at home to Chelsea, the other giant in this group, last week and that made victory in Madrid all the more important. They attacked plenty but Real Madrid rode the storm and even had chances themselves to win the game – a big one in particular falling to France international Sandie Toletti, who fired wide.

It was much closer than they came to hurting the Parisians last season and means that, no matter the results in the third matchday in November, they'll reach the halfway point of the group stages at least level on points with the French giants.

That'll be a promising position to be in given they're underdogs to progress from a group that features two sides that have reached the Champions League final, while Las Blancas are in just their third ever season as a team.

    LOSER: Lyon

With two group stage games played, the eight-time European champions and current holders of the trophy, Lyon, have just one point to their name. It's not what many expected, at all.

After an historic 5-1 defeat at home to Arsenal last week, they left Italy with only a point on Thursday despite leading Juventus 1-0 in Turin. An own goal from striker Melvine Malard levelled things up at 1-1 and somewhat summed up how things are going for them at the moment.

It wasn't just the result that made this a bad night for Sonia Bompastor's team, though. Damaris Egurrola was stretchered off after getting tangled up in a collision of bodies, adding yet another injury to Lyon's growing list.

Given her ability to play at centre-back, or at least be in a deep midfield position protecting that defence, her time out will be even more significant as the reigning champions have been hit extremely hard in those areas by absences already.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Sam Kerr

"A night I will remember forever." – That's how Chelsea forward Sam Kerr described her four-goal performance against Vllaznia on Wednesday night as she bagged her first Champions League hat-trick and revelled in an atmosphere that saw the "awesome" away fans celebrated by all.

It felt like a well-needed 8-0 win for the Blues after a start to the season that hasn't been without significant results – see the triumph over PSG last week – but this was their first statement performance, even if it was against a team they were expected to comfortably beat.

They turned on the style and will have given themselves a ton of confidence in doing so, something which particularly applies to Kerr as an individual. These were her first goals of the season and they put her in a commanding position when it comes to that Golden Boot race, too.

"Three games is a long time for me [not to score]," she said afterwards. "I’m paid to score goals but think I bring a lot to the team when I’m not scoring too. It’s about being patient and getting in my groove. I did tonight and hopefully I can do it again [on Sunday] against Aston Villa."

    LOSER: Berglind Thorvaldsdottir

PSG had a ton of attacking talent on the pitch on Wednesday: from world-class wingers Kadidiatou Diani and Lieke Martens to midfielder Jackie Groenen, winner of Euro 2017 with the Netherlands.

However, once again, what they didn't have in their XI was a centre forward.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto, one of the world's best, will be sidelined for a while still with an ACL injury and the task for PSG is to figure out how to compete against the elite without her.

In Madrid, Diani and Martens put exceptional deliveries into the box, ones begging to be put away, but there was no one in the area to do so.

Among the substitutes, though, was someone who could be the answer: Berglind Thorvaldsdottir. Iceland's starting centre-forward must have been counting the chances she could've scored had she been on the pitch – and she'd have got to a decent number, too.

Thorvaldsdottir might not be on Katoto's level but she has all the attributes that PSG are crying out for simply in her positional awareness and ability to be in the right place at the right time.

With great feet, quality hold-up play and a knack for the spectacular at times, she has even more to bring to the team, too.

All she needs is a chance to show it.

No stopping Nketiah! Winners & losers as Premier League leaders Arsenal edge Man Utd in Emirates thriller

Many pundits thought that Arsenal would struggle without star summer signing Gabriel Jesus up front. They thought wrong…

Pressure? What pressure!

Arsenal once again opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a thrilling 3-2 win against Manchester United, with Eddie Nketiah flicking in a last-minute winner to spark chaotic scenes at the Emirates.

The Gunners striker was on hand to turn in Martin Odegaard's shot from close range to seal a crucial three points for Mikel Arteta's title contenders and deliver the perfect response to Manchester City's win earlier in the afternoon.

It was a deserved victory for Arsenal, who as well as restoring their five-point advantage over City having played one game fewer, have also opened up an 11-point lead over fourth-placed United.

It was far from plain sailing for the league leaders, who went behind early on to an excellent goal from Marcus Rashford, who drilled a thumping finish past Aaron Ramsdale from 25 yards.

Nketiah drew Arsenal level soon after with a fine back-post header from Granit Xhaka's cross and Bukayo Saka's spectacular shot then saw the hosts in front after the interval.

The lead didn't last long, however, with Lisandro Martinez heading in an equaliser which looked to have earned United a point.

But then, with just a minute remaining, Nketiah popped up with the all-important winner to give a thrilling contest the blockbuster ending it deserved…

  • Getty

    Winner: Eddie Nketiah

What an afternoon for Arsenal's young striker, the biggest performance of his career to date. This was his sixth appearance in all competitions since coming into the side following Gabriel Jesus' injury, and he's now scored six times during that run.

There was so much to like about his goal which cancelled out Rashford's early opener. Granit Xhaka's cross from the left may have been begging to be put away, but Nketiah's clever back-post run and header were a clear sign of the confidence he is playing with right now.

And his second goal, the crucial winner, was the type of clever, close-range finish we've come to expect from Arsenal's master predator.

There was plenty of concern amongst the Arsenal fanbase when Jesus got his injury, but Nketiah has proven – just as he did at the end of last season – that he has what it takes to make a big impact at the top level. He's now Arsenal's top scorer this season, with nine, and you wouldn't back against him adding plenty to that tally in the coming weeks.

  • Getty

    Loser: Ben White

He's not had many of them this season, but this was a difficult afternoon for the Arsenal right-back. An early booking did not help his cause, nor did having to come against Rashford playing the way he is right now.

But with the threat of that early yellow card hanging over him, White looked unusually nervy whenever United ran at him and it was clear that the visitors were looking to target him as much as possible. It was no surprise when the Arsenal man failed to reappear for the second half, with Mikel Arteta opting to replace him with Takehiro Tomiyasu.

  • Getty

    Winner: Marcus Rashford

A player operating at the top of his game. Rashford's stunning strike to open the scoring was his ninth goal in his last 10 appearances and was a finish of a player brimming with self belief.

White has been exceptional for Arsenal at right-back this season, but this was undoubtedly the toughest opponent he has faced this season. Rashford was quick, direct and looked to run at him at every opportunity during the first half. He was a threat whenever he got on the ball.

    Loser: Wout Weghorst

There's not much to say about United's new striker. He was totally anonymous. If he is going to make a difference to Erik ten Hag's side between now and the end of the season, then he is going to have far more than he did at the Emirates. He was way off the pace.

Real Madrid 2023: Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and the scary line-up set to lead Los Blancos towards another decade of domination

With the addition of Jude Bellingham, and expected signing of Kylian Mbappe, los Blancos are constructing another winning team
