Baseball has been offering a vexing question to small-market clubs for decades.

In a sport with the wealth gap widening by the year due to local TV deals among other franchise-specific financial streams, how do teams on a tight budget consistently compete?

This is something the Milwaukee Brewers attempt to answer every year.  

It turns out the best answer might prove to be almost 2,000 miles away in the Dominican Republic.

In 2017, MLB hard-capped international spending, giving every team a chance to find top-tier talent without needing to have deep pockets in free agency or by going on a decade-long tanking mission to earn top picks in the MLB draft. A year later, Milwaukee bought 30 ½ acres in Santo Domingo Este to eventually open a state-of-the-art facility while concurrently spending $60 million in 2018 under owner Mark Attanasio to renovate their Arizona spring training facility. 

The Dominican dream was completed for more than $20 million last year on a 1.3 million-square foot academy. It’s able to house 106 players between 22 dorm rooms and three tryout player rooms. Overall, there are four structures for the academy including a dorm, clubhouse, kitchen and administration building. Inside the clubhouse, a 3,400-square foot gym can be found, five times the size of what it was in the previous facility. Finally, there are two classrooms to help players both complete high school and learn English. 

“I’m very appreciative of what the Milwaukee Brewers have done for Latin American players, myself and other Latins that they have,” says star outfielder and native Venezuelan Jackson Chourio. “I think what they do is give us an opportunity to play and do a good job of opening the door for us and giving us that opportunity. The truth is that complex down in the Dominican Republic is awesome. It’s beautiful. When I was down there, it wasn’t quite the same. I’ve gotten the chance to go down there and it’s incredible.”

Every MLB team has an academy in the Dominican Republic, a baseball hotbed that contributes the most players to the major leagues outside of the U.S. But their new crown jewel should help the Brewers attract top talent in Latin America, helping them to continue a streak of success highlighted by six playoff appearances over the past seven years, including four National League Central titles and a 2018 trip to the NL championship series.

“It’s not even close. It’s not even close,” says Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, comparing the current facility to the previous one. “I remember last offseason I stopped by and it was crazy. I was in shock. I was surprised at how everything looks there. The kitchen is huge. The weight room, the fields, everything. It’s an unbelievable place. I told them to do whatever you need to do to these guys and let them know there’s another level because they probably don’t want to come out of here. This is a beautiful place.”

Chourio came along before the new facility opened, but symbolizes the organization’s commitment to scouting in Latin America.

In January 2021, the Brewers signed the 16-year-old Chourio using their international pool money, along with a $1.9 million signing bonus, the biggest bonus in franchise history for an international prospect. 

Once in Milwaukee’s system, Chourio became a baseball comet. He began in the Dominican Summer League and Venezuelan Winter League before going to High-A in 2022, finishing that season with six games at Double-A Biloxi. The next year, Chourio dominated the circuit, slashing .280/.336/.467 with 22 home runs, 89 RBI and 43 stolen bases across 122 games. 

Then, before the 2024 season, Milwaukee general manager Matt Arnold did something the Brewers had never done before. He bought out Chourio’s arbitration years before the prospect ever stepped onto the grass at American Family Field, giving him $82 million over eight years.

And while Choruio isn’t the first player to ever sign a long-term deal with a MLB team prior to his first at-bat, his entire journey could be a template to be followed.

“I think it’s certainly something we’re open to and we want to make sure we’re making bets on the right players and the right people first and foremost,” says Arnold of the Chourio-type extension. “… With Jackson, we felt like we had all those ingredients in place and obviously, there’s some real risk when you make those kinds of bets. But when you’re talking about the right kind of person, we’re always open to those kinds of agreements with our younger players.”

To that point, there are a few Latin players new to Milwaukee’s system who could see a similar trajectory. 

A year ago, the Brewers landed a tremendous international haul, signing infielder Jesús Made (ranked No. 1 among Brewers prospects by MLB Pipeline) and shortstop Luis Peña (No. 5) before putting them into the Dominican facility. Both of them are now in Low A with the Carolina Mudcats and producing. 

Made, who just turned 18 last month, is slashing .280/.389/.423 with 16 extra-base hits, including four home runs, and 23 stolen bases in 47 games. Peña, also 18, has been even better with a .319/.378/.522 line and 15 extra-base hits alongside 24 swiped bags in just 35 games (a concussion briefly sidelined him in May). Perhaps most encouraging is that in 156 plate appearances, Peña has struck out just 18 times, a remarkably low rate for a player who would’ve just graduated high school if he grew up in the U.S. 

“The similarities are that [Made, Peña and Chourio] stand out immediately,” says Carolina manager Nick Stanley. “All three of those guys, as soon as you see them do anything, take a swing, run down the first base line, you say, I think all three of them are really focused on their careers and want to be great. I saw Jackson as a 19-year-old all year in Double A in 2023, and it was clear he wanted to be a great Major League player. I’m seeing some of those same things out of Made and Peña right now.”

At spring training, Milwaukee made sure to get the pair stateside to spend some time around the parent club. While neither came close to taking an at bat or anything of that nature, the visit was fruitful as some of the top-line prospects got to spend time with some of the Brewers’ big-league stars.

Speaking with Peralta, the 29-year-old talked about that moment as a time to impart wisdom on how to create and refine their routines while learning what makes their respective games work well and using preparation to their advantage.  

“One of the big things that we made sure to try to do as much as possible was bring those young Latin players over to Major League camp and get that experience,” Arnold says. “Even if they weren’t in big-league camp, they would come over for the day or they’d stretch in the morning with us and make sure they were around for batting practice. Maybe they weren’t in the game but they’d spend the day in the dugout. Having that experience in major league camp, not signed that long ago … we think that’s extremely valuable, especially in that environment.”

For the Brewers, finding and developing Latin talent isn’t just about baseball. It’s about succeeding in the margins, something the organization knows all about in a variety of areas.

وقال سارابيا، في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “ماركا” الإسبانية: “لست سعيدًا بالنتيجة إطلاقًا، خاصة بالنظر إلى اللحظات الحاسمة من المباراة، كان خطأ فينيسيوس متسببًا في هدف التعادل 2-2 واضحًا تمامًا”.

وأضاف: “لم يشاهد إيناكي اللعبة، لكنها لم تكن مجرد حادثة عرضية، بل الأمر كان خطأً واضحًا، يزعجني إضاعة الوقت في مثل هذه الأمور، ولكن عندما تتقدم مرتين، تشعر أن هناك عوامل أثرت على النتيجة النهائية، هذا يُثير غضبك”.

وواصل: “كنا نعرف ما نريد فعله، لكن تشكيلة ريال مدريد أربكتنا قليلًا، كان علينا إما التحلي بالشجاعة أو التراجع، هذا الفريق مستعد للتغلب على النكسات، ومواصلة الضغط بقوة دليل على شخصيتنا”.

Rajat Patidar, the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy-winning captain, hailed the “great character” shown by Central Zone not just in the final but throughout the tournament. He particularly heaped praise on the two spinners, Kumar Kartikeya and Saransh Jain, who shared 16 wickets between them in the final as Central Zone won their first Duleep Trophy title since 2014-15 by defeating South Zone by six wickets.”They have played a lot of matches together, Kartikeya and Saransh [for Madhya Pradesh] and they have the skill and are very difficult to play on this pitch,” Patidar said after the game. “The track was really good to bat and our bowlers dominated and made it tough for the other team. That was a positive sign.”It’s been a flawless tournament for Central Zone, where they cruised through the quarter-final against North East Zone and the semi-final against West Zone, qualifying for the final by virtue of gaining first-innings leads. “This wicket was slightly dry, and that is why we decided to bowl first,” Patidar said. “We wanted to bowl them out in the first innings as early as possible. That was our aim and it made the game easier.”We predicted that it would help the fast bowlers, but I wanted to give one spinner at least an over to see how the pitch is responding. I realised there was more help for the spinners rather than the fast bowlers.”L Balaji, the South Zone head coach, meanwhile, lamented the first-innings collapse and missing out on a few runs in the second as the major reasons behind his side’s disappointing performance. Chasing 65 on the final day, Central Zone lost three early wickets but despite the surface doing plenty of tricks, the chase was never going to be daunting.”The last day panned out to be bowler-friendly. South Zone’s team combination for the final was also a talking point. They went with three fast bowlers and one spinner in a bid to extend their batting line-up. It backfired with the Central Zone spinners finding plenty of purchase through the game, and the lone South Zone spinner, Ankit, bagging six wickets without any spin support from the other end.”We played three seamers in the previous game and wanted to stick with pretty much the same combination,” Balaji said. “All the bowlers bowled their heart out. Had we won the toss, the third seamer would have come into play. But I felt the boys did well selection-wise. We were consistent when it comes to the combinations.”Balaji also agreed that some of the shots played by the batters in the first innings “were a little bit unnecessary” as South Zone collapsed. But he was confident the experience of playing a major final would keep the players in good stead.”There are a lot of ifs and buts,” he said. “Shot selection-wise, some shots we could have been a little bit restricted. But on the field, when they are instinctively playing, you just have to give them the freedom to play their shot. But it was okay. This is a young batting unit and they will learn from this.”Balaji was also impressed by Siddharth’s temperament in the second innings. The 19-year-old fell for just 12 in the first innings but ensured he made up in the second, scoring an unbeaten 84. He stitched a 192-run seventh-wicket stand with Ankit, keeping the Central Zone players waiting.”We were put under pressure and he came up with a solid knock which we required at that time,” Balaji said about Siddharth’s knock. “That partnership was needed, and yes, coming not out is very important as a cricketer. He will learn. On the way, he will definitely learn a lot from this exposure and from this experience. I am sure he has got the talent to go higher.”

Some of the most expensive players in European football just so happen to be some of the youngest. The next generation is officially breaking through, scrambling to take football’s crown in the Premier League, La Liga and across Europe.

CIES have ranked the most valuable teenagers in world football, and some of them also feature in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, with Lamine Yamal next in line to become football royalty. The Barcelona winger finished second behind Ousmane Dembele in the last edition and is highly-tipped to take his crown in 2026.

But he’s not entirely alone in that battle. CIES’ list also includes four Premier League talents, and as English football continues to attract some of the world’s best players, there’s no denying that it could produce its best generation yet.

10 Lucas Bergvall (Tottenham): €68m

At just 19 years old, Lucas Bergvall is already an important member of Thomas Frank’s squad at Tottenham Hotspur. One of four Premier League players in the top 10, the Swede is valued at as much as €68m. The only way is up for the midfielder and that value, too. Whether that development ends in North London is the big question.

Bergvall has the talent to reach the highest heights in the Premier League – something that has not historically arrived at Spurs. Having already had a taste of trophies when winning the Europa League last season, the teenager will be one to watch in the coming years.

9 Endrick Felipe (Real Madrid): €73.2m

Although Endrick has endured a tough time under Xabi Alonso and is likely to head out on loan in the January transfer window, he remains one of the most impressive teenagers in European football. The Brazilian arrived in Spain for as much as €72m in 2022 and has since maintained that value in the last two years.

Now 19 years old, he simply needs the game time that he won’t be getting any time soon at Real Madrid. Whether that means a move to the Premier League or elsewhere remains to be seen. The likes of West Ham United and Manchester United have already been mentioned as reported suitors in what would be quite the move this winter.

8 Geovany Quenda (Sporting CP): €80.2m

Geovany Quenda’s place on this list comes as no surprise. The impressive winger is already reportedly on his way to Chelsea next summer after the Blues agreed a deal worth a combined £62.4m (€71m) to sign both him and teammate Dario Essugo in advance. Those at Stamford Bridge have made a reputation for sweeping up young players in recent years and Quenda will be next to arrive.

Chelsea should be glad that they got in when they did. According to CIES, the 18-year-old is now valued at as much as €80.2m on his own, let alone with Essugo. Set to combine with the likes of Cole Palmer and others next season, Enzo Maresca will be hoping to see a teenage star realise his potential in full at Stamford Bridge.

7 Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal): €84.2m

An England international and mainstay in the Arsenal squad, it feels absurd that Myles Lewis-Skelly is still just 19 years old. The Gunners’ famous Hale End academy has produced yet another gem and one of the most valued teenagers in European football. Although, it’s difficult to imagine the left-back being anywhere but in North London.

It’s a scary thought that the best is yet to come from Lewis-Skelly, who is already valued at as much as €84.2m by CIES and is set to play a crucial part in Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions.

6 Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal): €88.1m

Speaking of Hale End graduates, Ethan Nwaneri has been valued at a staggering €88.1m by CIES – making him the sixth most-valued teenager in European football.

Like Lewis-Skelly, the 18-year-old’s inclusion is no real surprise. The impressive attacker hasn’t been without his injury issues at times, but if any onlooker wants to discover his talent in full, then it’s worth watching his stunning goal against Manchester City last season.

That fact that Nwaneri burst onto the scene just a few years after Bukayo Saka emerged proves just how stacked Arsenal’s academy is with the next generation of stars.

5 Warren Zaire-Emery (PSG): €92.1m

Breaking into a side as dominant as PSG’s is no easy task, but Warren Zaire-Emery featured in 13 of their 15 Champions League games last season as they secured European glory as part of a historic treble.

At 19 years old, the Frenchman is only likely to play a larger part as the years tick by, taking his place alongside the likes of Joao Neves in Luis Enrique’s midfield.

Meanwhile, if anyone wants to take the midfielder off PSG’s hands, then it could cost them as much as €92.1m. Having graduated from the French side’s academy to become one of their most promising stars, his future looks almost certain to lie at the home of the European champions.

4 Franco Mastantuono (Real Madrid): €102.4m

Into three figures, Real Madrid’s Franco Mastuono is worth as much as €102.4m, according to CIES. The talented 18-year-old only arrived at Madrid in the summer in a deal worth around €45m, but is already looking like an excellent signing for the future. Unlike Endrick, he’s been thrown straight into Alonso’s plans and has even earned a number of starts at his new club.

One of the best teenagers that European football has to offer, Real Madrid have undeniably landed another gem at what should prove to be a bargain price in years to come.

3 Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona): €112.7m

The first and only defender on this list, Pau Cubarsi already plays a crucial part in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side. It speaks volumes that the 18-year-old is often selected over the more experienced Ronald Araujo and that’s reflected in CIES’ €112.7m valuation.

Whilst the La Masia academy has produced some great attacking talents over the years, they’ll be relieved to have unearthed such an impressive defensive gem and someone who should be at the heart of their backline for years to come.

2 Estevao Willian (Chelsea): €118.1m

In years to come, many supporters around European football are going to be wondering how exactly Chelsea won the race for Estevao Willian. Whilst the likes of Florian Wirtz and Xavi Simons have struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League, the Blues’ 18-year-old Brazilian has thrived in the face of endless opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

Although those in West London have missed with a number of young signings, they’ve undoubtedly hit the mark by signing Estevao. Their teenager is destined for greatness and is already valued at €118.1m.

1 Lamine Yamal (Barcelona): €349.6m

It was always going to be him, wasn’t it? Yamal isn’t just the most valued teenager in European football, but he’s one of the most valued players in the world. He is next in line for football’s throne. This generation’s answer to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – that’s the level that Barcelona have produced once again.

Even with that pressure on his shoulders, the Spaniard has continued to thrive – becoming the main man at Barcelona in just a couple of years. Still just 18 years old but already outrageously talented, CIES value Yamal at as much as €349.6m – more than double the amount they valued second-place Estevao.

Everton have made a decent if unspectacular start to the Premier League season and have now identified a player they want to sign as a matter of urgency in January.

David Moyes urges Everton to continue seeking improvement

After a summer of tidy business in the transfer market and some intriguing signings, Everton have started the campaign on the front foot and look to have left the days of fighting survival behind them, providing they can sustain their momentum.

Jack Grealish has been the Toffees’ most impressive addition and created another four chances in their 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United on Monday, albeit David Moyes believes there is still more to come from the England international after he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest squad.

He said before his side face Crystal Palace: “I think there’s still room for Jack to improve. We want more from him – more assists from him and goals from him, as well.

“He’s started very well, but we’re driving him on and trying to get more from him. I still think his ambition is to get back in the England team. If he scores some goals and keeps up the assists, he won’t be far away.”

Intriguingly, the Manchester City loanee could have competition for his place if Everton formalise their interest in Celtic forward Daizen Maeda after the Japan international cropped up on their radar to add versatility across the front three.

According to Orgullo Biri, Everton view Sevilla defender Juanlu Sanchez as a priority signing in January and are ready to make a formal approach for his services.

The La Liga outfit aren’t willing to sanction any bids that fall under the £17 million mark, though the Spain Under-21 international is open to a new challenge if the correct opportunity arises.

Jake O’Brien has featured frequently in an adapted role, though having someone who is naturally capable of slotting in would offer Moyes tactical flexibility at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

After losing three of his first six Premier League games in charge of Manchester United this season, it’s no surprise that pressure is once again starting to mount on manager Ruben Amorim.

The 40-year-old could only lead the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish last time around, but he was handed the benefit of the doubt after taking the reins midway through the campaign.

However, the hierarchy backed him with over £200m worth of funds to strengthen his first-team squad, but so far, it appears that his attempts have been to no avail.

Questions have since started to be asked about his long-term future in the role, but it’s thought that the hierarchy aren’t yet planning a change of manager despite the recent poor form.

Despite such reports, rumours continue to swirl around Old Trafford, with numerous names constantly touted over a potential switch to take the reins in the near future.

The latest on United’s hunt for an Amorim replacement

Over the last couple of days, former England boss Gareth Southgate has been hugely linked with the role at United – not for the first time, after being touted for the position numerous times in recent years.

The 55-year-old would be a cheap option for the hierarchy, with no compensation fee needing to be paid, given he’s currently without a job after departing the Three Lions role in July last year.

However, he’s not the only manager currently in their sights, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner another huge target, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist confirmed in recent days that the Eagles are planning to tie the Austrian down to a new contract, but the Red Devils are looking to swoop and secure his services.

He also stated that the 51-year-old could be open to the switch after receiving a lack of funding at Selhurst Park, with the move to Old Trafford undoubtedly a huge jump in his managerial career.

Why United’s latest target would be the next Mourinho

José Mourinho was a manager who divided opinion during his time at United, but his ability to win trophies is something which simply can’t be understated.

The 62-year-old spent two and a half years in the role at Old Trafford, securing two trophies in the form of the Europa League and the EFL Cup – with both trophies coming in the 2016/17 campaign.

He also led the club to their joint-highest league standing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, ending the 2017/18 season in 2nd place behind Manchester City.

His outspoken nature often drew discontent from the fanbase, subsequently leading to his departure from the Red Devils back in December 2018.

However, the hierarchy could appoint their next version of the manager should they appoint Glasner, with the Austrian possessing a lot of similarities to Mourinho.

In a surprising turn of events in 2024/25, the 51-year-old claimed the FA Cup by beating Manchester City in the final to secure their first-ever major trophy.

He also won the Community Shield against Liverpool back in August, matching the feat achieved by Mourinho at Chelsea before his own move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Glasner, who’s been labelled “sensational” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley, has also led the Eagles to an 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions – the longest of any side in England’s top-flight.

In his 72 outings in charge of the Eagles, he’s claimed victory in 35 of them, whilst only losing 15 times – further highlighting how impressive he’s been at Selhurst Park.

Such a record has seen him lose six fewer games than Amorim at United, that’s despite taking charge of 23 more outings than the 40-year-old at Old Trafford.

It remains unclear if Glasner himself would be open to making the move to Manchester, but it’s clear that the Austrian would be an unbelievable appointment should Amorim depart.

Given the failures felt since the current boss took charge nearly 12 months ago, it’s crucial that the board make a huge call on his future in the coming weeks, but the appointment is just as important, with Glasner needing to be the number one target.
