Not just Gomes: Man Utd must activate buyback clause to re-sign amazing ace

There’s always a real sense of intrigue when a player chooses to fly the nest at Manchester United, with supporters no doubt torn between wishing the star well, while also hoping that his exit doesn’t come back to bite them.

In the case of Angel Gomes, for instance, the Red Devils will certainly be ruing letting him slip from their grasp back in 2020, with the Englishman leaving on a free after limited game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made just ten first-team appearances for the club in all competitions.

The youngest player to feature for the first team since Duncan Edwards after replacing Wayne Rooney at the age of just 16 and 263 days back in 2017, Gomes has since gone on to flourish in France, via a stint in Portugal, at Ligue 1 side Lille, culminating in a first senior England call-up last month.

Last season in the league, the 24-year-old created 15 ‘big chances’ and provided eight assists from his deep-lying midfield berth, with speculation rife that United are among the clubs who are eyeing a potential move for the diminutive playmaker next summer.

With less than 12 months to run on his existing deal, the 5 foot 6 sensation surely won’t be short of suitors, with the Red Devils plotting a potential Paul Pogba repeat in bringing back an asset they previously let go for nothing.

Paul-Pogba-Man-Utd-France

The one-time Boavista loanee may not be the only asset that INEOS could look to bring back to Old Trafford, however, with there another rising star who could be worthy of a second chance in the near future.

Man Utd have a chance to right a wrong

In cases like Pogba and Gomes, talented youngsters perhaps need to move on from the United bubble in order to flourish, allowing them the chance to gain regular game time away from the intense scrutiny that life in Manchester provides.

There is no harm in then plucking those talents once they have realised their potential elsewhere, however, with the club likely to be keeping a close watch on the likes of Willy Kambwala and Hannibal Mejbri in the coming years – two players who have buyback clauses in the deals that took them to Villarreal and Burnley, respectively.

The same could also be said of a certain Alvaro Fernandez, with the promising Spaniard having made the move to Benfica on an initial £5m deal over the summer after a six-month loan spell – a move that also includes a buyback (as well as a sell-on clause)

The 21-year-old departed after failing to make a first-team appearance for the club, with the towering left-back having arrived from Real Madrid as part of a trio of Spanish imports in the summer of 2020, alongside Marc Jurado (Barcelona) and Alejandro Garnacho (Atletico Madrid).

While Garnacho has since gone on to sparkle, both Jurado and Fernandez have fallen by the wayside, although after a bright start to life in Portugal, a return to United in the near future should be in store to help aid the club’s left-back woes.

Alvaro Fernandez's start at Benfica

Described as a “quality” player with an “amazing engine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time in United’s youth ranks – where he notably made 47 U21 appearances, providing 14 goals and assists – the youngster notably sparkled during the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Preston North End.

That stint at Deepdale saw Fernandez register six assists in 42 games in all competitions as an illustration of his attacking prowess, having been hailed as “immaculate” by then-boss Ryan Lowe.

With Tyrell Malacia subsequently missing the entirety of last season through injury, and with Luke Shaw enduring his own stints on the sidelines, the hope was that Fernandez would come into the first-team picture.

Ultimately, however, he was sent on loan to Granada for the first half of the campaign, before joining his current side on an initial temporary deal in the winter window – even with Sergio Reguilon’s own loan having been cut short in January.

Yet again, United have been forced to start the new campaign without a recognised left-back, while the Spaniard has flourished again in Lisbon, notably averaging 1.8 key passes per game from his six outings in Liga Portugal in 2024/25. Only Amad Diallo (2.4) has bettered that return among those back at United in the Premier League.

He also impressed during his first Champions League start against FK Crvena zvezda last week, providing three key passes from his defensive berth in that 2-1 win, while also completing three of his five crosses.

The Spain U21 international remains rather raw, but at a time when Erik ten Hag’s side are so lacking in that left-sided department – with Harry Amass still also just 17 – he could well have been a worthy part of the Red Devils squad this season.

Thankfully, while the club have let him slip from their grasp, the inclusion of that buyback clause ensures that they could have first dibs over re-signing the 6 foot 1 ace in future, allowing Ten Hag and co the chance to rectify their mistake.

Andrew Salter four-for helps Glamorgan hit back after Saif Zaib half-century

Further rain in Cardiff limits chances for either side to push for victory

Glamorgan 52 for 2 trail Northamptonshire 215 (Zaib 50, Salter 4-18, van der Gugten 3-46) by 163 runsGlamorgan had a solid day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship with Northamptonshire but more Welsh rain cut into the time available to ensure a result. Figures of 4 for 18 from Andrew Salter helped Glamorgan dismiss Northamptonshire for 215 although the home county only needed to take nine wickets with Gareth Berg absent hurt.Glamorgan’s reply reached 52 for 2 when the second rain shower of the day delivered a fatal blow to the afternoon’s action.Rain meant only 44.5 overs were possible on day one and day two started half an hour late, but Northamptonshire saw Berg suffer an ankle injury warming up. It was a big blow to the visitors.Overnight batsman Charlie Thurston and Saif Zaib resumed with the score 128 for 4 and while both played and missed on occasion, the pair were relatively untroubled.Zaib went to 50 from 92 balls, but both batsmen were then dismissed in quick succession. First, Thurston was caught by Billy Root from the bowling of Michael Hogan. Then, Zaib drove Salter to Marnus Labuschagne at short cover for 50. Salter also dismissed Simon Kerrigan for a 22-ball duck, caught by Timm van der Gugten at mid-on.Ben Sanderson went lbw to Salter with Northamptonshire 197 for 8 at lunch and Salter’s fourth ended the innings nine down after the break. Jack White was caught by van der Gugten, with Berg unable to bat.Glamorgan opener Joe Cooke survived a run-out scare but was then caught at first slip by Northamptonshire captain Ricardo Vasconcelos as Sanderson got one to move away off the seam. Vasconcelos then grabbed David Lloyd too with Luke Procter the bowler this time.A sharp downpour forced the players from the field at half past three with Glamorgan 48 for 2 and an early tea was taken. Labuschagne and Root returned to the field but were able to add only four more runs before more wet weather intervened. The second shower of the day was far heavier than the first and play was abandoned at 5.05pm. Labuschagne and Root will restart on Tuesday morning, but Glamorgan will have to bypass their opponents quickly if they are to try and force a win. Australia star Labuschagne – who didn’t look totally convincing with a couple of boundaries to third man – will hold the key to their fortunes.

Receiving the ball on his left foot, Pulisic took a touch and then picked out a corner, making it 2-2 with his second goal in as many games, having scored in the win over Juventus in the semifinal on Friday.

The American then played a part in Milan's stunning last-gasp winner, as Pulisic's hockey assist on Tammy Abraham's goal helped Milan secure the trophy win.

Chance for West Indies to keep weakened Australia under pressure

Kieron Pollard did not confirm whether he would be fit but Jason Holder is expected to return

Andrew McGlashan20-Jul-2021Big PictureAs for a number of sides, one-day series have been few and far between for these two teams since Covid-19 struck. For both it will be just their third series under the World Cup Super League and in Australia’s case it’s more than six months since they last played 50-over cricket. In a way, the two teams emphasise how each ODI is now more important. Australia have won both their series against tough opponents in India and England but are only 10 points better off than West Indies due to dropping a game in each series. West Indies were whitewashed by Bangladesh but made up ground with a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka.Since 2000, the sides have played each other 48 times in ODIs with Australia 37-8 ahead although in this series the home advantage for West Indies could be significant. It means they can pick their specialist one-day squad whereas Australia’s line-up will be a mix-and-match job given the absentees and T20 focus of the tour. With Aaron Finch ruled out of at least the first match with a knee injury, stand-in captain Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh will be the only members of the top order who have been a regular part of Australia’s ODI line-up. In Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa they still have the core of their bowling attack together although there are spaces to fill there as well.West Indies played some very solid cricket against Sri Lanka earlier this year when they won all three games chasing but coach Phil Simmons has laid down the challenge for them of going big if they get the chance to bat first. The recent T20 series was West Indies’ first bilateral success against Australia in any format since 1995 when they won a one-day series. They have a good chance of matching that this time.Form guide (last five completed matches)

In the spotlightShai Hope has a phenomenal ODI record. Of players to score over 3000 runs, only two – Virat Kohli and Babar Azam – currently have a better average. He was in fine form during the series against Sri Lanka in March when he made 110, 84 and 64. In his one previous innings against Australia, he made 68 at the 2019 World Cup.Mitchell Marsh was the one significant success in the T20 series as he scored 219 runs and claimed eight wickets with some of the most consistent cricket he has produced for Australia. He returned to the ODI side in early 2020 for the first time in two years but then missed the home series against India due to injury. His ODI numbers are pretty solid: a batting average of 34.36 and bowling return of 36.79. He will enter this series full of confidence with a chance to cement his role as the team’s premier limited-overs allrounder.Related

Alex Carey to captain Australia after Aaron Finch ruled out

Team newsKieron Pollard did not confirm whether he would be available. If he continues to be sidelined it could open up room for another batter. Hope is the vice-captain in this format. Otherwise if he is fit it could be a choice between Jason Mohammed and Shimron Hetymer in the middle order. Jason Holder is also set to return after being rested. Interestingly, Pollard hinted that West Indies could consider including legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr after his success in the T20 series even though he is not part of the squad.West Indies (possible): 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Jason Mohammed, 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt)/Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Fabien Allen, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Akeal Hosein/Hayden Walsh Jr, 11 Sheldon CottrellFinch’s absence may give Matthew Wade a chance of his first ODI in four years if only to add some experience to the line-up. Marsh appears likely to remain at No. 3 after his success in the T20 series while there could be debuts for Josh Philippe and Ben McDermott. Carey did not rule out a return for Dan Christian as well.Australia (possible): 1 Matthew Wade, 2 Josh Philippe, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Moises Henriques, 5 Ben McDermott, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Adam Zampa, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Jason BehrendorffPitch and conditionsThis will be the first international cricket in Barbados since January 2020. Carey said the pitch looked good while Pollard noted the lush outfield. The forecast is for a cloudy but dry day.Stats and trivia Nicholas Pooran needs 18 runs to reach 1000 in ODIs. If he did it in his next innings, his 26th, he would be the third fastest for West Indies behind Viv Richards (21) and Gordon Greenidge (23). Since 1980-81, Australia have handed out three (or more) ODI debuts on only two occasions: 1984-85 against New Zealand in a game that was rained off and in 2012-13 against Sri Lanka – a match where Finch, Usman Khawaja and Phil Hughes made ODI debuts.Quotes”It’s an Australian cricket team that left the shores and these guys will want to impress. It’s a matter of us concentrating on what we need to do and our plans. Mitch Marsh has got away from us a little in the T20 series but hopefully it’s not the same in the ODIs.”
Kieron Pollard“Learning from those T20s, we played some good cricket, we had some opportunities to stay alive in the series but unfortunately didn’t quite grab them. Now moving into one-day cricket, the game lengthens out, there’s opportunities to bat time in the middle, a new location and a new series with the likelihood of some fresh faces, it’s an exciting feel around the group.”

> Veja classificação e simulador do Paulistão-2022 clicando aqui

As it happened – England vs India, 2nd Test, Lord's, 4th day

This is starting to look like a wicket where 200 could be a challenging target. Balls are kicking up frequently, there’s massive turn for the spinners, and it’s a slow-ish track too. India are 55 shy of that mark as I write this, with their last recognised batters at the crease. One of them is Rishabh Pant, so it is going to be firecracker stuff from one end for as long as he lasts. But it is yet another opportunity for England, who had to toil a few hours to get the game down to one wicket away from the tail. The second new ball is around the corner though, and this is their chance to swiftly end this innings. One way or another, we might be in for a rollicking end to the day.UPDATE: It has gotten too dark to bowl the quicks, the new ball will have to wait.90 minutes to go5pm

Broad: I won’t be the last of England’s injuries during this India series3.41pmStuart Broad heads to the dressing room after turning his ankle in training•Getty Images

One man who really looking forward to playing this Test was Stuart Broad, and if the FOMO was getting to him earlier in the day, he must be absolutely restless as he sees this attack push India against the wall.Last evening, he wrote a column for the about how he injured himself in training, and about how it might not be the last injury to an English bowler during this series. Here are excerpts:”The most frustrating aspect was that the injury was incurred so innocuously. I have jumped a thousand knee-high hurdles in my time as part of a regular warm-up drill. I felt really good in Tuesday’s warm-up, looking forward to what should have been a really special week of winning my 150th Test cap at Lord’s.”I jumped the hurdle double-footed and as I landed on the edge of my right foot, my ankle gave way and I felt the weirdest sensation. Imagine being whipped across the back of your leg as hard as is possible.”I turned to Jimmy Anderson and said: ‘Did you just whip me?’ He told me later that I did so with a face of thunder. With a look that said: ‘I want to kill you.’ But I immediately knew from his expression and response of, ‘I was nowhere near you, mate,’ that something was badly wrong. Moeen Ali said that it looked like I slipped; Sam Curran said he heard a pop. Unable to put any weight through my foot — I still can’t — as I hobbled off, I realised I had done something pretty significant. It felt like the worst possible cramp. […] As soon as I left the field on Tuesday, I knew my series against India was over. Even a grade one tear would have sidelined me for 10 days to two weeks and with the matches coming so thick and fast, there would have been no time to get game ready again.”[…] Sadly, I won’t be the last England injury of this series — not with the GPS ‘red zones’ as they are for players right now. The difficulty with the 2021 schedule being so white-ball dominant is that bowlers have just not built up overs in the bank. Say Saqib Mahmood had been drafted in for this Test. He hasn’t played a red-ball game for 10 weeks and it’s very difficult to play a four or five-day match without some kind of workload behind you. It’s why bowlers do not come back from injury and play straight away. At that point, your body is in what we call the red zone. A point at which you are susceptible to breaking down. It needs to be conditioned to bowling a greater volume of overs over time. Unfortunately, the way the fixtures are there is no way of doing that.”Pujara weathers the storm3.29pmCheteshwar Pujara hooks one away•Getty Images

Gosh, this is exhilarating cricket right now. England are calling all the shots and any thoughts of India pushing for a win are firmly out of the picture. This has been a good surface, both teams scored at healthy rates during their first innings; At the moment, England are barely allowing India to get more than two an over. It’s been a commendable comeback from them, starting from Day 2, to the point where the result is now being entirely driven by them.On the flipside, Pujara and Rahane, who are both struggling for runs, seem more assured now that runs aren’t what India expect of them. That short-ball barrage from Mark Wood is a good parallel to what Pujara faced earlier in the year against Australia – just a relentless attack on his body. England had a silly point, a forward and a backward short leg, as well as men on the boundary to take away any swishes that could result in cheap runs. And he’s done well to weather it. These two are coming close to 30 overs of batting together now for a fifty-run stand, and it’s what India needed. They’re all smiles as they leave the field for tea. They’ve needed time out in the middle and, dare I say, this is the kind of batting they both enjoy doing. On Curran2.10pmSam Curran roars in delight after dismissing Virat Kohli•Getty Images

And here, again, is Andrew Miller trying to figure out just what Sam Curran is:”I defy anybody to give a precise answer to the question of what makes Sam Curran such an extraordinary competitor. He has skills in abundance, plus the bonus of being a left-armer – a subtlety that messes with all batters’ angles, however experienced they may be. But he’s short by the standards of international cricket, and significantly slower than your average international seamer. Frankly, his career defies logic, which probably goes a long way to explaining why he gets inside so many players’ heads. His performance in this morning’s session, however, was proof of the size of his ticker. Lesser players would be cowed by their contribution to this series so far – 37 wicketless and expensive overs across the first two full innings of the series, plus an untimely golden duck on Saturday afternoon, just when Joe Root most needed his middle-order to dig for his cause. Curran, however, took his under-achievement as a personal challenge, and with the first ball of his fourth over, he snagged the single biggest scalp of an extraordinary morning session. It helped his cause no end that India were on the back foot. In the first innings, he’d entered the attack with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul poised to strike. This time, Mark Wood had scalped them both before India’s deficit had been written off, leaving only tension in the air for Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, whose verbal stoush with James Anderson seemed to signal that he was bang up for the fight, but whose technique is not quite ticking to the same extent. His initial angle had been entirely round the wicket, hooping in on a full length to target the lbw. But Kohli’s biggest weakness this summer has been more on a fifth-stump line, where his eagerness to feel bat on ball had been his undoing in both his previous dismissals in the series, his first-baller to Anderson at Trent Bridge, and his first-innings stab to slip off Ollie Robinson. So Curran reverted to over the wicket, and struck with his very first effort – pushing the outswinger across Kohli’s bows, and haring off to fine leg in solipsistic rapture as Jos Buttler snaffled the edge. He had made it happen again. As he will doubtless do again and again.’I have only ever been impressed with everything he has done, and everything he has achieved in his career,’ James Anderson had said at end of the second day’s play. ‘Everything he turns his hand to, he seems to be fairly natural at – whether it’s T20s or the England white-ball set up, and he’s been brilliant for us in the Test team.’I wouldn’t try and offer anything other than encouragement,’ added England’s greatest seamer. ‘He knows what he’s doing.'”On Kohli1.45pmVirat Kohli is distraught after being dismissed by Sam Curran•Getty Images

Here’s Shiva Jayaraman from our stats team, looking at what the number say about Kohli’s luck:”Why can’t he replicate his form from his last tour to England? Is Virat Kohli out of form? Is he shuffling too far across to the off stump with his back foot? Is he playing with hard hands? Or is it just bad luck?In the first Test of the 2018 tour, at Edgbaston, James Anderson tested Kohli outside off and had him nick one to the second slip, where Dawid Malan dropped the catch. Kohli went on to score a hundred. Anderson would end up bowling 270 balls at Kohli on that tour without managing to dismiss the India captain. Kohli made 593 runs in that series with two hundreds and three fifties. On this tour, he has managed all of 62 runs in three innings.ESPNcricinfo’s control data reveals that Kohli has actually been in control of a higher percentage of the shots that he has played in the first-50 balls of his innings on this tour than he was in 2018. In the first two Tests of the 2018 tour, Kohli was in control of 74.8% of the shots he played in the first fifty balls he faced. On this tour, he has played with a higher control at 81%. Forty-five false shot brought about one dismissal. On this tour, 18 have brought two. Kohli was dropped thrice in the first two Tests of the last tour. He hasn’t been let off this time around. Luck’s contribution is often forgotten when a player does well, their technique is blamed when they don’t. Or it could be that batters make their luck with tighter techniques. Maybe, Kohli’s shuffle across to the offstump is bad luck for him.”Things have happened12.58pmSam Curran sports yellow sunglasses•Getty Images

It was getting heated out there – words exchanged, lbw appeals, booming cover drives. From England, it’s been relentless pressure. And that been in large part because their fourth bowler has shown up in some style. Sam Curran didn’t find too much success in the first Test, or in the first innings of this match, but he’s shown up when it mattered. And he’s done it with some good old-fashioned setting up.Was around the wicket to Kohli for the most part, angling it in. Then troubled his inside edge with the inswinger, and then dangled the wide one. Kohli had been driving freely through the covers, but he’s been done by the angle while playing for an inswinger. Wonder if the exchange with Anderson unsettled him? He’s chucked something at the window in the dressing room, looks like a glove. This has been a sensational session of bowling from England. India are in trouble and the men in charge of trying to dig them out of it will feel like they are also playing for their own spots.Rohit falling at fine leg and square leg in Tests12.11pmESPNcricinfo Ltd

It is on! India’s openers are out cheaply with the scores level. England now, by some distance, the team that is ahead in the Test. Mark Wood has been immense. There is variable bounce in this pitch – if you’ll remember Anderson getting one to rise on Rahul, then one to keep low – and at Wood’s pace, it has pushed India out of comfort. Not to say that it’s variable bounce that got Wood those wickets – those are both super execution of plans. Both openers were solid on the front foot and England had the man to tackle that. In the first innings, he came on very late, in about the 20th over. Today, he’s in there early and he’s unsettled India right away. And there will be another inquest into Rohit’s shot selection – second time this series, and at least the third time this year, that he’s been dismissed playing the hook. This one will need serious explaining – three men back, one of whom had literally just gone there. England are all over India. The FOMO is real10.50am

Good morning and welcome back to the Live Report. This match situation should thrill those who like symmetry – exactly two days remain for the remaining two innings. From all the evidence so far of the weather, that should mean two full days too. That’s 180 overs left of a contest in which neither side has been able to make big strides without being stopped in its tracks; it could get very delicate these next two days as they step into top gear to try and go 1-0 ahead. India’s openers have a job to do first – see off the new ball and get deep enough into the innings that the middle-order can bat with some freedom. They’ve both been in good form so far. There will be many English counting the law of averages to catch up with them today. I’m convinced it’s the only way this match turns real spicy, real fast.

Man Utd keen on "world class" star but INEOS stall at huge £290k-p/w wages

Manchester United are among the clubs interested in signing a Champions League winner, according to a new report. The Red Devils got back to winning ways over the weekend as they beat Southampton, and they will be looking to make it two wins in just a couple of days as they face Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

United added five new players to their squad over the course of the summer, but it appears as though their hierarchy is keen to get ahead of the rest when it comes to their next transfer targets.

Since the transfer window has been shut, United have been linked with several players who could be transfer targets for January or the 2025 summer transfer window. The Red Devils are said to be keeping an eye on Martin Baturina of Dinamo Zagreb after watching him during the recent international break. United had scouts in place for Croatia’s games, and they are said to have followed Baturina back to Zagreb.

As well as looking at Baturina, United have also sent scouts to Norway to watch Sverre Nypan in action for Rosenborg. The 17-year-old impressed against the Red Devils in pre-season, and United are said to have kept an eye on the player, with them having someone present on Sunday to watch him in action.

Nypan is said to be a fan of the Premier League side, so that could give them the edge when it comes to a transfer race, as Bayer Leverkusen also had scouts in attendance. Baturina and Nypan are two up-and-coming talents that United appear to be keeping a close eye on, but the Red Devils also have their eye on a more experienced player ahead of the next transfer window.

Man United are keen on “world-class” star

According to The Sun, relayed by the Metro, Manchester United are interested in signing Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich, but they face competition from West Ham United.

Goretzka is said to be “upset” over his lack of game time at the Bundesliga giants, as he’s fallen down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany. So far this season, the midfielder has played just one minute of competitive football.

United and West Ham have already shown interest in the 29-year-old, but other Premier League teams could make a move for the player should a move away from Munich appear very likely. Goretzka is contracted to the German side until 2026, meaning Bayern may be happy to sell the midfielder in January before he enters the final year of his contract.

However, the report states that one stumbling block INEOS face in completing a deal is that Goretzka is said to be on a weekly wage of 346,154 euros, which is roughly £290,000. Goretzka, who has been described as being “world-class” by journalist Stefan Bienkowski, turns 30 in February, so signing him on such a huge salary would go completely against the new INEOS regime’s transfer policies.

Plan B for Afghanistan: Travel to Sri Lanka via Pakistan and Dubai

Afghanistan board draws up contingency plan for travel, as no commercial flights have taken off from Kabul since the Taliban’s takeover of the country

Umar Farooq21-Aug-2021The Afghanistan contingent might have to take a circuitous route to Sri Lanka for their scheduled three-match ODI series against Pakistan, to be played in Hambantota, because of the political turmoil in their country. No commercial flights are taking off from Kabul following the Taliban takeover of the country and, ESPNcricinfo understands, a contingency plan has been worked out by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB): get Pakistani visas for all the players and support staff, get them to travel by road to Pakistan, then fly to Dubai, and then on to Colombo for the series, if no direct flight out of Kabul can be arranged.Related

All this follows a period of uncertainty, with an update on Thursday saying that the series would go ahead as planned. That the matches – it’s a home series for Afghanistan – would take place in Hambantota, after originally being planned in the UAE, was decided before political events in recent days saw the Taliban take charge following the withdrawal of western forces and the collapse of the elected government in Afghanistan.ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB had offered to host the series in one venue in Pakistan after the UAE plan fell through, but the ACB declined, preferring to play the matches in Sri Lanka instead. The series is due to begin on September 3, and will involve a three-day quarantine period on arrival for both sides. That commitment, as well as an Afghanistan Under-19 tour to Bangladesh later in September, have been the focus of immediate concern though ACB CEO Hamid Shinwari had said that both tours were going to be on schedule, pending logistical issues around the departure of the sides.”Cricket is doing very well,” Shinwari told ESPNcricinfo earlier this week. “We are going to the office (ACB). The cricket team is preparing for the Pakistan series in Sri Lanka. It is confirmed. We are committed to sending a team to Sri Lanka as soon as possible. There is transition going on here in Afghanistan hence there is a vacuum in flight operations and availability is affected. But we will fly out as soon as we find a flight. We have our boys assembled in Kabul and they are preparing for the series.”We hope the squad will depart in the next four days. We have updated both the PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket and both are on board. I am thankful to SLC for hosting us and that is really generous of them.”It is understood that the PCB had delayed announcing the Pakistan squad for the series – it was originally due to be announced on August 20 – given the uncertainty over Afghanistan’s travel plans.Even once the Afghanistan players get their Pakistan visas, a further complication could potentially affect the series: the Covid-19 pandemic. On Friday, Sri Lanka announced a 10-day lockdown, two days after the island reported 3793 new cases and a highest-ever single-day death toll of 187. The lockdown is set to run until August 30, four days out from the scheduled start of the Afghanistan-Pakistan series.GMT 1720 The story was updated with details about the 10-day lockdown in Sri Lanka.
