'All nonsense!' – Bayern Munich deny 'threats and ultimatums' from Dayot Upamecano over Real Madrid & PSG interest as director provides contract negotiations update

Bayern Munich director Max Eberl has firmly dismissed reports of 'threats and ultimatums' from Dayot Upamecano regarding his future, labelling such claims as 'nonsense'. Amid interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Eberl insisted that contract talks with the French defender are progressing well and remains 'very confident' a deal will be reached soon.

Eberl slams 'nonsense' rumours

Bayern sporting director Eberl has moved to quash growing speculation regarding a breakdown in relationship between the club and star defender Upamecano. With the January transfer window looming and the Frenchman's contract situation becoming a topic of intense debate in the German media, reports had emerged suggesting that the player's camp had made his final demands regarding an extension and will not be negotiating further with the club, putting Bayern in a precarious position.

These rumours, fuelled by reported interest from European giants Madrid and PSG, painted a picture of a hostile negotiation table. However, speaking to the press, Eberl was categorical in his denial of any such friction. He insisted that the dialogue between the club and the player's representatives has been professional and constructive, rubbishing the idea that Upamecano is holding the club to ransom.

"Basically, I am very confident, I have said that often enough here," Eberl stated, addressing the ongoing saga. "We have already discussed contract extensions together over weeks and months. Our great wish is [to extend].

"What is circling around us, that he had cancelled, threats, ultimatums – all nonsense. We are talking and we are talking very well."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThe Christmas deadline?

The timing of the negotiations has added an extra layer of intrigue. With the Bundesliga heading towards its winter break, fans are eager for clarity on the squad's future. Eberl used a festive metaphor to describe the current state of play. While he stopped short of promising a signed contract under the Christmas tree, he hinted that the club is pushing hard to finalise the deal before the year is out.

"I don't know what else is coming behind the individual doors in the Advent calendar," Eberl joked. "That [a signed contract] would be desirable, but I can't promise that."

He added: "This eye of the needle is getting smaller and then he has to go through this eye of the needle. My wish would be that he goes through it and not past it. He'll manage that."

Real Madrid and PSG lurking

The urgency in Munich is driven by the genuine interest from abroad. Real Madrid have been scouring the market for defensive reinforcements following a spate of injuries to their backline over the last 18 months. An experienced, physical centre-back like Upamecano fits the profile Los Blancos usually covet. Similarly, Paris Saint-Germain are constantly monitoring top French talent, and bringing a national team starter back to Ligue 1 would align with their recruitment strategy.

Upamecano has been a polarizing figure at times during his stint in Bavaria, often alternating between world-class dominance and high-profile errors. However, his importance to the current setup is undeniable. Under the current coaching staff, he has often been the first name on the team sheet when fit, praised for his recovery pace and ability to break lines with his passing.

The broader contract puzzle

Upamecano is not the only headache for Eberl. Bayern are currently navigating a complex period where several key pillars of the squad are approaching critical contract junctures, with an extension for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer being discussed. It has also been hinted by the Bayern head honchos that Serge Gnabry will be offered a new deal, while Leon Goretzka's contract expires at the end of the season.

For now, the message from the Allianz Arena is clear. There are no ultimatums, there is no war, but there is a "needle's eye" that must be navigated. Whether Upamecano chooses to squeeze through it and commit his prime years to Bayern, or walk "past it" towards Madrid or Paris, remains the defining question of Bayern's winter.

Bayern Munich have two more Bundesliga fixtures before the winter break begins. Eberl and the board will hope to use the festive period to turn positive talks into pen on paper, shutting the door on Real Madrid and PSG before the January transfer window opens. If no agreement is reached by the New Year, the "nonsense" rumours are likely to return with renewed vigour

Pakistan lose Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf to injury for first Australia Test

Pakistan have suffered a massive blow ahead of their historic first Test against Australia with the loss of both Hasan Ali and Faheem Ashraf through injuries. Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Wasim jnr have been called up to replace the pair, but the holes left by the injured pair will not be easily filled. Both Hasan and Ashraf were part of Islamabad United’s injury-hit PSL campaign that ended on Friday evening with their narrow loss to finalists Lahore Qalandar.Ashraf missed the game with a hamstring strain while Hasan played, but limped off towards the end of Lahore’s innings with what has now been confirmed as an abductor strain. The pair have been key to Pakistan’s Test side over the last year. Ashraf has been the seam-bowling allrounder Pakistan haven’t had for years and though he’s taken only 10 wickets in the eight Tests he played in 2021, he was essential in providing shape and discipline to the attack, as well as relief for the other bowlers – something successive Pakistan attacks over the years have lacked. With the bat he’s averaged nearly 40 through 2021.Related

Hasan, meanwhile, was the third-highest wicket-taker in Tests last year, behind his team-mate Shaheen Shah Afridi and R Ashwin with 41 wickets at an average of just 16.The pair is expected to be fit for second Test, which starts in Karachi on March 12.”Faheem and Hasan will rejoin the squad in the coming week and, after completing their three-day mandatory isolation, integrate with the rest of the squad during the first Test. Both are expected to regain full fitness before the second Test that will be played in Karachi 12-16 March,” the PCB said.”Both Iftikhar and Wasim (chosen due to their all-round ability) will reach Islamabad tonight and start their three-day isolation at the team hotel, after which they will join the rest of the squad after clearing Covid tests.”The first Test begins in Rawalpindi on March 4, the first international game Australia have played in Pakistan in over 23 years.

4 key passes, 3 duels won: Crystal Palace star can make Mateta unstoppable

Crystal Palace took a step away from the relegation zone, beating Ipswich 1-0 in a Premier League six-pointer on Tuesday evening.

Despite having slightly less of the ball (46% possession), Palace generated 1.64 xG, taking 13 shots and creating three big chances.

Oliver Glasner was in need of a big result, as his side have been languishing in and around the relegation zone, averaging 44.9% possession. the fifth lowest in the division, taking 14.3 shots per game (10th most), and conceding 12.4 shots per game (12th largest tally).

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the game, making it six goals in 17 appearances this campaign in all competitions.

The 27-year-old talisman is extremely important for the Eagles, not just for the goals he provides, but also for his all-round striker play, and that was on full display against Ipswich last night.

Jean-Philippe Mateta's performance in numbers

Being the spearhead of Oliver Glasner’s side, Mateta is tasked with holding up play to bring the number 10s into the game, as well as providing box threat and looking to apply the finishing touch.

Mateta did all of the above against Ipswich, scoring the winning goal, providing two key passes to bring others into play, and being a nuisance, winning two aerial duels, and three ground duels.

But it wasn’t just the Palace centre forward who impressed for the Eagles last night, as a key man returned from injury, providing the creative spark they’ve been missing and helping them to victory.

Eberechi Eze's performance in numbers

The 26-year-old brought the creativity back to his Palace side, providing the assist for Mateta’s goal, and possibly even saving Glasner’s job in the process.

Eze had 65 touches in the game, completing 79% of his passes, four of which were deemed key passes. While one of those was the assist, he also played a delightful dinked ball into the path of Mateta just after the hour mark that created an opening for the visitors.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder is the hub of creation for his side, especially since Michael Olise left the club in the summer, with many looking towards him to make something happen in a game.

Eze has made 14 appearances so far this season, scoring four times, and providing three assists in 1,149 minutes played.

Playing as the left inside forward in Glasner’s system, it allows Eze to roam into central and wide areas to pick up the ball, help link play, but also arrive closer to the box in order to apply the decisive touch either with an assist or a shot of his own. On that evidence, he could well be just the remedy that Mateta needs to return to the form he showcased last term.

It’s not just the Eagles striker who will be glad to see him back in the side, but an under-pressure Glasner will no doubt be delighted to see him back after missing three Premier League games in November.

Now the Eagles await the return of Adam Wharton, Daichi Kamada, Matheus Franca, Rob Holding, and Chadi Riad to build up a fully fit squad, and hopefully continue making strides away from that dreaded relegation zone.

Pakistan's absences give Australia chance to start strongly

Both sides were still mulling the balance of their attacks as rain hit the build-up

Alex Malcolm03-Mar-2022Big Picture Australia’s arrival in Pakistan for their first Test tour of the country in 24 years has been billed as a momentous occasion for world cricket and it is certainly important. However, they are the sixth nation to tour since 2019 and the fourth to play Test cricket behind Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa. It is perhaps just as significant that Australia have not played Tests overseas since mid-2019, due to the impact of Covid, prior to Pakistan’s first home Test in a decade against Sri Lanka. Since then, Australia have had 14 Tests at home while Pakistan have only played five at home and 12 away. Pakistan have won seven of their last eight Tests including two at home against South Africa early last year. Australia are coming off an Ashes series where they thumped England 4-0, with Sydney’s rain the only thing preventing a whitewash.Australia are at full strength but outside of Usman Khawaja, David Warner and Steven Smith, the rest of the batting group has very little first-class experience in Asia. Pakistan are missing some key contributors from the side that was very successful in 2021 with Abid Ali still recovering from a heart problem, while Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf and Haris Rauf are all absent at least for the first Test.Australia look stronger on paper but that could be neutralised in the conditions and with a very limited preparation. They only arriving in Pakistan at the start of the week and rain wiped out their last training session on Thursday.Related

Australia WDWWWIn the spotlight Shaheen Shah Afridi looms as one of the key men in this series and he will have to shoulder the load of leading the attack without Hasan alongside him. He was the leading quick bowler in Test cricket during 2021 with 47 wickets at 17.06 and has faced Australia before in two Tests in Australia where he bagged just five wickets for the series as Warner and Marnus Labuschagne plundered four scores of 150 plus between them in two Test matches, with Warner making 335 not out in Adelaide. But Shaheen is now far more experienced and Australia showed some vulnerability against the pace of Mark Wood in the Ashes. Late left-arm swing at high pace either with the new or old ball could rekindle memories of Wasim Akram.Steven Smith was Bradman-esque on Australia’s last overseas Test series in the 2019 Ashes and he also starred on the 2017 trip to India, scoring three centuries in a four-Test series. However, since facing England in 2019 he has averaged 36.86 from 14 Tests and is coming off a home Ashes series where he passed 30 just twice in eight innings and failed to make a century. The batting surfaces were challenging during that series and he will likely enjoy the pitches in Pakistan far more. But his latest concussion is also another concern having not faced fast bowling in the nets until two days ago since he knocked himself out in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. If Australia are to succeed in the subcontinent over the next 12 months they will need large contributions from Smith. He will want to make an early statement.Shaheen Shah Afridi will be vital to Pakistan’s attack•AFP/Getty ImagesTeam news Pakistan have a lot to ponder. Firstly one of Shan Masood or Imam-ul-Haq will open alongside Abdullah Shafique in the absence of Abid Ali. The absence of Ashraf upsets the balance and the damp weather on Thursday has left them weighing up the extra bowler or extra batter. If they go for the former, it could mean a Test debut to Mohammad Wasim Jr.Pakistan (possible) 1 Shan Masood/Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Abdullah Shafique, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Babar Azam (capt), 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Mohammad Wasim Jr, 8 Nauman Ali, 9 Sajid Khan, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Naseem ShahAustralia’s top seven is settled but Pat Cummins said they are debating whether to play three quicks or two spinners and will wait for the toss although the extra pace bowler would seem the likely option. There were some questions over which three quicks it would be, but Scott Boland is likely to miss out with the return of Josh Hazlewood. Australia did not confirm which of the two back-up spinners is in the frame. Legspinner Mitchell Swepson has long been the understudy to Lyon and the likely man to partner him but Ashton Agar’s left-arm orthodox is tempting for the selectors if the surface is slow.Australia (possible) 1 Usman Khawaja, 2 David Warner, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodPitch and conditions The pitch was under covers on Thursday with rain preventing both sides from training but they got a good look at it on Wednesday and it appeared flat and excellent for batting. The cooler weather in Rawalpindi also means the surface is unlikely to break up. In the last three Tests played here since 2019, the fast bowlers have been very successful. The forecast is good for the opening day but rain could be a factor later in the game.Stats and trivia Since Test cricket returned to Rawalpindi in 2019, Shaheen has the most wickets at the venue taking 12 at 19.83 just ahead of Hasan Ali with 10 at 11.40 in the only Test he played there. In seven Tests against Pakistan, David Warner has made 1084 runs at 108.40 with five centuries and two fifties. Only one of those centuries has come outside Australia though, in the UAE in 2014. Australia faced Pakistan in the UAE in 2018, but the last Test they played on the subcontinent was in September 2017 against Bangladesh. Darren Lehmann was the coach, Smith was captain and Australia played one fast bowler, three spinners and two allrounders.Quotes “There could be times when the scoreboard is only ticking over at two runs an over and for our batting group we’ve just got to be prepared to bat and bat and bat. If there are certain stages where you feel it will speed up be brave enough to take on those opportunities.”
Pat Cummins on Australia re-learning the rhythms of playing Test cricket on the subcontinent“We know the significance of Australia coming to Pakistan and we are excited about it. They are one of the best sides in the world and we can’t take them easy. They are quite an experienced side and we have planned accordingly so there will be good cricket.”

Ipswich may already lose "powerful" £20k-p/w star as Juventus send scouts

After finally earning their first Premier League victory since gaining promotion back to the top flight, Ipswich Town could reportedly fall victim to their own success, with Juventus sending their scouts to watch one particular star man in action.

Ipswich transfer news

Following Wolverhampton Wanderers’ victory over Southampton earlier in the weekend, Ipswich travelled to Tottenham Hotspur as the only remaining side without a Premier League victory this season. Saving their best moment for when they needed it most up against a top six side, however, the Tractor Boys shocked the North London club to take home what they will hope to be the first of many historic wins this season.

Now out of the Premier League’s bottom three by a single point, victory over Spurs could prove to be crucial come the end of the season. It came as little suprise that it was Liam Delap who scored what turned into the winning goal late in the first-half. The summer signing has been one of the brightest sparks in the bottom half this season and his rise may not end with Portman Road.

Ipswich want to sign future "Premier League star" who's outscoring Delap

The sensational winger would make Ipswich much more dangerous.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Nov 14, 2024

According to Tutto Juve, Juventus have sent scouts to watch Delap this season as the European giants potentially begin to plot a move to secure the forward’s signature.

Having arrived from Manchester City for a reported £20m in the summer, Delap has enjoyed an excellent run of form – perhaps far better than anyone could have expected – and has become the player most likely to spearhead Ipswich to safety. So, to lose such a talent this early into his time at the club would represent a major blow.

Whether the former Machester City academy star can resist the temptation of a top club remains to be seen, however.

Ipswich cannot afford to lose "powerful" Delap

Whilst it’s easy to doubt Ipswich in their battle to survive in the Premier League, they have an asset that many clubs in a similar position often struggle to find and suffer the consequences as a result. At his disposal, Kieran McKenna has a natural goalscorer who looks likely to reach double figures for goals, having already found the back of the net six times in 11 Premier League games. Such a record is simply invaluable for any side, let alone a relegation candidate.

If European clubs of Juventus’ calibre come calling, then the Tractor Boys have to hold them off until at least the summer transfer window when they’ve potentially got survival secured and preparations are underway for a second consecutive campaign in the top flight.

£20,000-a-week Delap has, of course, earned plenty of praise throughout the season, including from current England U21s boss Ben Futcher told Henry Winter, as relayed by the East Anglian Times: “Liam was an absolute handful. If you want to go and fight him, he’ll match you. If you want to race him, he’ll win the race.

“He’s very difficult to deal with, he’s quick, he’s powerful, he’s in good form in the Premier League. Liam’s a top number nine and he’s going to keep developing.”

Rangers offered chance to sign £100k-p/w ace in January, he wants to move

Rangers have now been offered the chance to sign a new midfielder in January as they look to recover from their dismal start to the season, it has been claimed.

Rangers reinforcements required in January

Philippe Clement’s side are currently 11 points behind reigning champions and Glasgow rivals Celtic, having endured a tough start to the season in the Scottish Premiership. Worse still, they are seven points behind Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen side, who have enjoyed a rich run of form in the opening months of the campaign and sit second in the league.

Losses to Kilmarnock and Aberdeen as well as Celtic have been damaging to Clement’s side, while they have also been unable to go on one of their usual winning runs that often characterise their campaigns.

There are still chances of silverware this season though, with Rangers impressing in the Europa League and still with a chance of lifting either of the Scottish Cups, with Clement’s side facing Celtic in the semi-final of the League cup before Christmas. One of the problem areas for his side have been the central areas.

Young duo Connor Barron (22) and Mohamed Diomande (23) have been at the base of Rangers’ midfield, and it has been a shoot-out between Ianis Hagi, Tom Lawrence and Nicolas Raskin for the third midfield spot.

Clearly, there is room for improvement in that area, with no one able to provide a consistent attacking threat from the middle of the pitch to support unlikely new marksman Cyriel Dessers, who frustrated and dazzled last season but now appears to be more consistent in front of goal. Now, they could land a new option to help them push on in the second half of the campaign.

Rangers offered chance to sign "very good" midfielder

That comes as a fresh report has revealed that Rangers and Clement have now been offered the chance to sign out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka in January.

The former Aston Villa youngster has seen his gametime severely limited since Enzo Maresca’s arrival, who admitted in the summer that though he was a “very good” midfielder, he was not going to get much action in west London.

Rangers now in talks to agree new transfer fee for impressive £16k-p/w ace

“Carney, I think he is a very good player. With us, is he going to play 35 games? I’m not sure”, the Italian explained. “The problem is, because of some injuries in the past, I think the best for him is to play 30 or 35 games in a row, to show himself that he is fit and how good he is because he is very good.”

Having failed to secure a loan move in the summer, he is now set to leave in January and is open to moving to Ibrox, according to The Boot Room, recognising that he needs regular first team football.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are happy for him to leave either as part of a “loan move or a permanent departure”, though the latter would be a club record move for Rangers and is therefore highly unlikely. Even a loan move could see them need to pay a substantial chunk of the 21-year-old’s £100,000 a week wages, so it remains to be seen how flexible Chelsea are on that front.

Known as a box to box midfielder with an eye for goal from his time among the youth setup, Chukwuemeka could add another dimension to Rangers’ midfield for the second half of the season, and could help them push for success come the end of the campaign.

'I don’t love it for NWSL' – USMNT legend and ex-San Diego Wave coach Landon Donovan expresses concerns over Naomi Girma's record transfer to Chelsea

    WHAT HAPPENED

Landon Donovan, USMNT legend and former coach of San Diego Wave FC, expressed his disappointment over Naomi Girma's recent record-breaking transfer to Chelsea. In January, Girma completed a $1.1 million move from San Diego to Chelsea, marking the first million-dollar transfer in women's soccer history.

Donovan said that, while he understands why Girma left the NWSL for Europe, he is disappointed that the defender didn’t stay.

“I have a lot of thoughts on all of this. Candidly for Naomi, I know she wanted to go but I don’t love it for NWSL as probably the best center-back in the world is leaving and wants to leave," he said on his podcast, Unfiltered with Landon Donovan and Tim Howard. "I understand all the reasons but in my opinion, having watched a lot of the games now and having coached in it, the NWSL, top to bottom, is the best league in the world.

“Some of the top clubs in the world play in Europe but their leagues are not great. Chelsea can walk through four or five of those teams without breaking a sweat. So I get disappointed when a player of Naomi’s quality doesn’t want to stay here, but I get it.”

  • WHAT DONOVAN SAID

Donovan said his chief concern over the move is that it reveals an apparant instability in the league.

“I think the No. 1 talking point, for me, for NWSL in the offseason is there’s so much change and the league’s still feels a little instable in that way," he said. "And what I mean is that very few players get signed to three, four or five-year deals. So most players, from year to year, have the freedom to move – and historically in the league players have crazy power. If they’re not happy, they can leave.

“And it reminds me a little bit of MLS back in the early days – like if someone wasn’t happy with someone or whatever, you just call your agent and get me out of here. And that doesn’t happen in mature leagues around the world. So I do want to see that change.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The NWSL has undergone significant changes recently, with expansion teams, ownership changes, and increasing investment. However, these developments have also brought other changes, including coaching turnover and player movement.

    WHAT’S NEXT?

The 2025 NWSL season kicks off on March 14. Girma’s former side San Diego will play their first game of the season against Angel City FC at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on March 15.

Girma's next game for Chelsea is scheduled for March 15 when they face Manchester City, though Girma was recently injured and may not feature.

Guilherme Arana, lateral do Atlético-MG, recebeu vaias.

BRASIL LUTANDO, MAS EM ‘CLIMA’ DE FLAMENGO x VASCO

Pouco a pouco, vieram oportunidades.
