Man Utd now willing to bid £30m+ to land bargain deal for "great" new star

With Ruben Amorim looking to build his back three at Old Trafford, Manchester United are now reportedly willing to submit a bid worth over £30m to sign a current Premier League defender in 2025.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils are at the beginning of what they will be desperately hoping to be a successful rebuild after so many false dawns. Whether it’s been Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho or Erik ten Hag, no manager has been able to transform United back into the juggernaut they once were under Sir Alex Ferguson. Now, that challenge has fallen the way of Amorim.

The former Sporting CP boss is still just 39 years old and remains one of the best young managers around. Whether his inexperience will show remains to be seen, but those at Old Trafford simply cannot afford for another appointment to go wrong.

Whilst sporting director Dan Ashworth and INEOS won’t want to repeat their mistakes by simply revisiting their manager’s past players, the likes of Viktor Gyokeres stand out enough to suggest that he wouldn’t follow the same path under Amorim as Antony did under Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

That said, the Red Devils’ first task could yet centre more around their new manager’s backline. According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are now willing to submit a bid worth €40m (£33m) to sign Marc Guehi in 2025.

Attempting to use the fact that Guehi’s current Crystal Palace contract comes to an end in 2026, Manchester United could bypass his hefty reported price tag of over €60m (£50m) to land a bargain deal next summer.

Another centre-back should be on United’s agenda, and top target Guehi represents a wise choice given his Premier League experience and potentially cheaper price tag compared to what was set when Newcastle United came calling last summer.

"Great" Guehi can complete Amorim's back three

Implementing a 3-4-2-1 formation, adding another centre-back to Amorim’s ranks should be near the top of INEOS’s to-do list at Old Trafford amid doubts over whether all of United’s current options can play in a back three.

Signing Guehi would quickly ease those concerns given the fact that he played in a back three for England at Euro 2024 to great success – becoming one of the tournament’s standout defenders.

Defensive partner John Stones was one of many full of praise for Guehi in last summer’s tournament, telling BBC Radio Five Live (as relayed by Metro): “So good, so good.

“For him to come in, not having felt the feelings around tournament football before or these kinds of games, all kinds of different emotions that come with it that you’ve never experienced before. He’s handled [it] so well, his performances have been great.

“I said to him when we’re in this, or whoever’s playing or whoever I’m playing with, I’m your right arm, you are my left. We do this together. I’ve got your back and he’s bought into that so well.”

Now, when 2025 arrives, it could be Stones’ club rivals Manchester United that benefit the most from Guehi’s talent.

Arsenal could sign "one of Europe’s hottest prospects" to replace Saka

It just has not been Arsenal’s season this year.

Mikel Arteta’s side were handed a nightmare set of fixtures to kick off the Premier League campaign. Then, they had to deal with several suspensions, only for club captain Martin Odegaard to miss almost two months of football due to an injury picked up on international duty.

Once the Norwegian returned, the North Londoners looked back to their best, but back-to-back draws in the league against Fulham and Everton once again prevented the team from gaining any momentum.

Finally, to round it all off, the Gunners’ poster boy and undoubtedly most important player, Bukayo Saka, is now set to miss “many weeks” of action after suffering a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace on the weekend.

It would be fair to say that, at the moment, without their talismanic winger, Arsenal’s prospect of finally winning the title seems a million miles away.

However, the transfer window is set to open next month, and the club have already been linked with a player this year who could be the perfect solution to their current problem.

Arsenal's internal solutions

So, before we get to the player Arsenal could sign next month to solve the issue of Saka’s absence, it’s worth looking at the possible solutions within the squad, and for our money, two seem the most likely.

The first is what we saw following the Englishman’s substitution on Saturday: Gabriel Martinelli playing off the right.

The former Ituano gem hasn’t been at his best this season, but when playing off the opposite flank at Selhurst Park, he looked genuinely dangerous for the first time in a while and managed to put away the chance Gabriel Jesus missed in the second half.

However, as the 23-year-old is naturally right-footed, that could change how that side of the pitch operates, so another option Arteta could take is starting the left-footed Ethan Nwaneri there.

The 17-year-old is widely considered to be one of the most exciting prospects in the league at the moment, and while the manager would probably prefer to ease him into the side more carefully, this crisis could be the perfect opportunity for him to establish himself as an important player in the first team.

Moreover, while he has primarily played in midfield for the first team this season, he has some experience playing out wide from his time in the youth sides.

With all that said, neither of these options is ideal, so what the club could, and probably should, do instead is sign someone next month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

More specifically, they should sign a star they’ve already been linked to.

The star Arsenal should sign

So, to get straight to the point, the player Arsenal should be looking to sign next month is Atalanta star Ademola Lookman.

The good news for fans is that the club have been consistently linked with the former Everton man since the summer.

However, it would likely be an expensive deal, as some reports suggest the Serie A side would demand around €70m for their man, which converts to about £58m.

Now, that is undoubtedly a lot of money to spend on a player in January, but based on his form for the Bergamo outfit over the last few years, it would be more than worth it.

For example, in just 45 appearances last season, the Nigerian international, whom former professional Nedum Onuoha dubbed “one of the hottest prospects in European football,” scored 17 goals – three of which came in the Europa League Final – and provided ten assists.

This season has been just as spectacular for the 27-year-old.

In just 20 appearances, he has already scored 12 goals and provided five assists, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 1.17 games.

On top of being a lethal attacker, the Wandswaorth-born dynamo is also incredibly versatile.

Therefore, he could easily step into Saka’s role on the right while the Hale End icon is out injured and then provide competition for the entire frontline when he’s back.

Ultimately, while there is no perfect solution to losing your best player, signing Lookman next month would be about as close as Arsenal could get.

CR7 played the full 90 minutes for his country as they took to the field in UEFA Nations League competition. The 40-year-old frontman found himself on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline, and the final outcome could have been worse had Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen not missed a first-half penalty.

Another Red Devils star, Rasmus Hojlund, scored the only goal of the game. He broke out Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siuuu’ celebration after hitting the net, but insists that was not intended to mock his sporting idol in any way. Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has no complaints or excuses after a disappointing display from the Portuguese.

WHAT CRISTIANO RONALDO SAID

Instead, he is already looking ahead to the second leg of a crunch quarter-final contest on Sunday. Ronaldo will be raring to go in that fixture, with the all-time great posting on social media: "We have 90 minutes to turn things around. Let's go all out, Portugal!"

WHAT NEXT?

Ronaldo previously savoured Nations League glory with Portugal in 2019. He is, as captain of his country, determined to get his hands on that silverware again. He is also looking to add to a record-shattering haul of 135 goals at international level.

Corberan must now ditch West Brom star who earns even more than Maja

West Bromwich Albion will hope they can get back to winning ways in the Championship this coming Sunday after falling to a narrow 2-1 loss to Watford last time out.

Winning their next clash versus Bristol City at the Hawthorns would set them up nicely for two away days in quick succession before 2024 is out, with a tough tie against table-toppers Sheffield United closing out the busy year.

Even as the fixtures come thick and fast around this bumper Christmas period, Carlos Corberan will likely keep selecting Josh Maja to lead the line, who has more than turned around his Baggies career this campaign.

Maja's heroics at West Brom

Although he has fired blanks across his last five games in the tricky league, the Spaniard has continued to select the former Sunderland man, knowing he can rifle the back of the net with an effort in the blink of an eye.

After all, the clinical 25-year-old has only averaged a mere 26 touches per Championship clash this season, but still has a very impressive goal haul of ten from 20 games to boast about.

Even as his output in front of goal has dried up of late, he still managed to pick up an assist towards the start of the month when the Baggies valiantly rescued a share of the points versus the Blades, having linked up with assist king Tom Fellows well to level the game at 2-2.

Whilst Maja’s space in the side is understandably concrete, the same cannot be said for Grady Diangana anymore, who had started to fall way down Corberan’s pecking order even before his recent injury troubles popped up.

Diangana's future at West Brom

With his contract up next summer, the time could soon be coming for West Brom to have a conversation with Diangana about his future at the second-tier outfit.

Just glancing at his high wage in Corberan’s camp is enough to think a parting of the ways will soon happen, with the Congolese winger earning a steep £20.3k-per-week pay packet, which makes him a higher earner than even Maja who rakes in a surprisingly lesser £17k-per-week salary.

West Brom winger Grady Diangana.

At least with Maja, it’s been well-documented how excellent he’s been this season, whereas Diangana was struggling even before injury disaster struck for him in November.

Last season in the Championship, the ex-West Ham United attacker picked up a sublime seven goals and eight assists, but he has nothing to show for his efforts during a dismal 2024/25 campaign to date.

Looking at the table above, Diangana has suddenly become a reserve figure for the Baggies, with no goals and zero assists to shout about when he is unleashed into the action by Corberan.

Of course, the experienced forward hasn’t been helped by his luck with injuries – having now been absent since West Brom’s trip to Hull City last month – but his lack of game time hasn’t really impacted his side in their pursuit of promotion.

Once dazzling his adoring set of supporters with showboat-laden displays, with one of his West Brom teammates, Jed Wallace, even labelling him as “unbelievable” in the past, Corberan just isn’t that reliant on the 26-year-old to be a bright spark anymore, when you also consider he has Fellows and Mikey Johnston to call on down the channels.

This January could be the perfect opportunity for West Brom to cut ties with their loyal servant, therefore, before he is allowed to leave for nothing, managing to perhaps recoup a fee before going full steam ahead to try and return to the Premier League.

Worth less than Dike: West Brom hit gold selling star who had "great value"

Derbyshire battle back after Shan Masood stumbles in pursuit of 1000 runs before end of May

Brooke Guest and Leus de Plooy fifties make high-class Notts attack work for rewards

Nottinghamshire 22 for 0 trail Derbyshire 260 (du Plooy 57, Guest 51) by 238Half-centuries by Brooke Guest and Leus du Plooy helped Derbyshire total 260 all out on the opening day of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire, for whom leading wicket-taker Dane Paterson finished with 3 for 36.After being asked to bat first on a heavily green-tinged pitch, and facing a trio of international fast bowlers in Stuart Broad, James Pattinson and Paterson, Derbyshire will feel they could have done much worse, particularly after leading scorer Shan Masood – who still hopes to become the first player since Graeme Hick in 1988 to aggregate 1000 first-class runs before the end of May – suffered a rare failure.Australian former Test bowler Pattinson, his dander up after twice being hooked for six, bowled with real pace and there was plenty of aggression from Broad in the last of his three Championship appearances before an expected Test recall against New Zealand next month. On the down side for Derbyshire, they are without three senior bowlers, with Suranga Lakmal, Anuj Dal and Ryan Sidebottom all injured. Nottinghamshire began their reply with 22 without loss from three overs, all the runs off the bat being scored by Ben Slater.Pakistan Test opener Masood, whose seven previous innings included three centuries, two of them doubles, and only one score under 62, this time fell on 18, caught behind pushing at a ball from Pattinson that found a thin edge. His dismissal left him on 844 runs for the season, still with an outside chance to make history as the earliest to reach the magical 1000 in May, although he has only the second innings of this match in which to do it because the rest of the month is given over to the Vitality Blast. Were he to make 156 or higher he would better Don Bradman’s 1938 achievement of reaching the milestone by May 27.After Masood’s dismissal, Derbyshire slipped to 41 for 3 when Paterson removed Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen with consecutive balls. Godleman was caught at third slip before Madsen nibbled at one that left him late to be caught behind, yet new man du Plooy helped Guest steer a path to 89 for 3 at lunch, the latter miscuing Pattinson for six over the short boundary on the Bridgford Road side. After the interval, Guest completed a 68-ball half-century but was not able to build on it, losing his middle stump to a quick ball from Broad that deflected off his bottom hand. du Plooy followed Guest in losing his wicket soon after passing fifty, leg-before playing back to a ball from Steven Mullaney, but Derbyshire added 102 runs in the session.Alex Hughes, a late call-up after Dal turned his ankle warming up on the outfield, joined Guest in hooking Pattinson for six, off a no-ball to boot, having been dropped on 6 off Mullaney.Slater took a stunning boundary catch to deny former Derbyshire team-mate Luis Reece a half-century, before being given a rare opportunity to bowl his offspin and claiming his maiden Championship wicket with his first ball as Tom Moores stumped Alex Thomson. After the second new ball was taken, Hughes became a second victim for Broad when he was lbw to a full delivery but he and debutant Liam Hurt – the fast bowler on loan from Lancashire – had added 27 to secure a second batting point. Paterson and spinner Liam Patterson-White picked up the last two wickets.

Man City in regular contact to sign "phenomenal" £120m star player for Pep

Desperately in need of reinforcements, Manchester City are now reportedly in regular contact to sign one of Europe’s best players worth as much as £120m ahead of 2025.

Man City transfer news

One win in 10 and entering this weekend’s fixtures off the back of conceding two late goals to lose the Manchester derby last time out, Manchester City are more wounded than they’ve ever been under Pep Guardiola, who has simply been out of answers. For the first time, their squad looks to have taken a wrong turn somewhere down the line; departures such as Cole Palmer’s look regretful and the Citizens must splash the cash.

Names such as Bruno Guimaraes and Florian Wirtz have already been mentioned, with City’s intention seemingly set on spending big to solve a problem before it becomes a crisis that permanently unclasps their grasp on English football.

Bruno Guimaraes against Manchester City

Guimaraes particularly stands out as the type of player capable of replacing the injured Rodri for the rest of the campaign, which instantly makes him one to watch if the Citizens decide to make a January statement. Meanwhile, those at The Etihad could look towards an alternative to Wirtz who is just as, if not more talented.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Manchester City are in regular contact over a potential move to sign Jamal Musiala and have already held talks with his representatives, given that his current Bayern Munich deal expires in 2026.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 19, 2024

Any deal will come far from cheap, however, with the Bundesliga giants reportedly slapping an eye-watering £120m price tag on one of their most prized assets. As Kevin de Bruyne prepares to depart as a free agent at the end of the season, however, City could flex their financial muscles.

"Phenomenal" Musiala could replace De Bruyne

There’s no doubt that replacing a player of De Bruyne’s talent will feel like an impossible mission for Manchester City, but turning towards Musiala would certainly be an instant step in the right direction.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Whilst the German poses a different kind of threat to the combination of De Bruyne’s athletic engine and pure technical ability, Musiala is a danger man in his own right, often providing his best work in the tightest spaces.

It’s no surprise that praise has followed the midfielder throughout the early stages of his career, with former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann telling reporters as relayed by Bayern Strikes after a 5-0 win over Hungary back in September: “Jamal has already undergone a great transformation in the past year in terms of his presence in the box. During the tournament it was very good, today it was phenomenal.”

Dhoni to lead Super Kings in IPL 2023

It has also been learnt that Ravindra Jadeja will remain with the team as a player

Nagraj Gollapudi20-May-20223:36

Shastri: Dhoni ‘unbelievably fit’, has ‘enjoyed his cricket this year’

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings have not had a happy IPL 2022, but they have a leg-up for the next edition: MS Dhoni will be with the team as a player next season and, importantly, is going to be their captain too. The main reason to play, as Dhoni explained, is to bid adieu to his supporters in Chennai and the rest of India.Asked by Ian Bishop on Star Sports about his future before Super Kings’ match on Friday evening against Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni said, “Definitely [I will play IPL 2023]. It’s a simple reason: it will be unfair to not play in Chennai and say thank you [to the fans]. Mumbai is one place where, as a team and as an individual, I have got a lot of love and affection. But it wouldn’t be nice to the CSK fans.”And also, hopefully next year there will be an opportunity where the teams will be travelling so it will be a like thank you to all the different places where we will be playing games at different venues. Whether it will be my last year or not that’s a big question, because you know we can’t really predict about something two years down the line. But definitely I’ll be working hard to come back strong next year.”Related

Shastri: Jadeja as captain 'looked a fish out of water'

Dhoni: Hopefully my last T20 will be in Chennai

As reported by ESPNcricinfo almost an hour before the toss, Dhoni, now almost 41 years old, has told the Super Kings team management that he will be available for the 2023 IPL and will lead the team too. In another shot in the arm for the four-time IPL champions, it has been learnt that Ravindra Jadeja, who left the Super Kings camp following an injury, will also be in the mix for the 2023 season. This debunks the perception that Jadeja had fallen out with Dhoni and the team management after the captaincy swap a little more than halfway into Super Kings’ 2022 season. The developments are significant for Super Kings, whose game against Royals is their final match of the ongoing season. With just four wins so far in 13 matches, Super Kings are ninth on the points table, just above Mumbai Indians. It was on May 1, ahead of Super Kings’ ninth league match, against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune, that Dhoni returned as the team’s captain. This, after Jadeja had decided to step down, having taken the reins from Dhoni at the start of the season. At the toss, when Danny Morrison asked Dhoni whether he would be seen in action in 2023, Dhoni had given a cryptic answer: “You’ll definitely see me in the yellow jersey – whether it’s this yellow jersey or some other yellow jersey you will have to wait and watch.”The issue of the Super Kings’ captaincy has been in the news right from the beginning of the season; when, just two days before the first game of IPL 2022, it was announced that Jadeja would be leading them; when a run of losses kept Super Kings in the bottom two of the points table; when the decision was made to return the captaincy to Dhoni and then Jadeja abruptly exited the competition.5:26

Vettori: ‘Probably comes down to Jadeja not enjoying the captaincy’

After winning the first match on his return to captaincy, Dhoni had spoken about the circumstances that forced him to take back the captaincy. He explained that captaincy was “having an effect” on Jadeja’s game, and that the team management had eventually decided that they needed Jadeja the player more.”What is important is once you become the captain, you have to take care of many things,” Dhoni had told Star Sports after the Sunrisers match. “And that also includes taking care of your own game. And with him, his mind was working a lot.”It’s not easy to control your mind, it’s the strongest feature… body, physiques, all of those things are fine, but once your mind starts working and it wants to contribute more: okay, what’s the combination I can play with; okay, who can bowl at what point of time. It doesn’t really stop. So, what really happens is the individual is not able to relax – even when he closes his eyes and wants to sleep, the mind is still working.”So what I felt was, it was having an effect on his game also. When he was going in to bat, or when it comes to his preparation, is putting this [extra] burden affecting his game? Because I would love to have Jadeja as a bowler and batter and fielder. Captaincy, fair enough. Even if you relieve [him of] captaincy, and if he is at his best [as a player], that’s what we really want because we were also losing a great fielder. We were struggling [to find] a deep-midwicket fielder.”They will be there, in the Super Kings ranks, next year too•BCCIDhoni, the Super Kings captain right through their journey in the IPL – bar the two years the franchise was banned following the spot-fixing scandal of 2013 and the first few matches of the ongoing season – and Jadeja were both part of the quartet retained by Super Kings ahead of the 2022 players’ auction. While Jadeja was retained as the first pick at INR 16 crore, Dhoni was the second player retained at INR 12 crore.Dhoni, who will be close to 42 by the next IPL, is already the oldest player in the tournament. Though he is one of the fittest players around as well as one of the most astute captains, the question about Super Kings’ next captain has been posed often to both Dhoni and the Super Kings management over the past few years.Last October, immediately after Super Kings won the 2021 IPL, N Srinivasan, the Super Kings’ owner, said that Dhoni would always be “part and parcel” of not just the franchise, but also the city of Chennai and the state of Tamil Nadu. “There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK,” Srinivasan had said.A month later, while felicitating Dhoni and the team for winning their fourth IPL title, Srinivasan had reiterated, “People keep bugging him, ‘are you going to continue?’ , he’s there, I say. He’s not gone anywhere. Why don’t you understand the fact that he’s there. He’s still there. With us.”

Mathews, de Silva fifties help Sri Lanka cut down deficit on rain-hit day

Stumps Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva collected half-centuries as Sri Lanka ploughed ahead on a rain-hit day three, getting to within 83 runs of Bangladesh’s total, with five wickets still in hand. The visitors lost three wickets, including that of captain Dimuth Karunaratne for 80, but are now perhaps better-placed than Bangladesh to push for a result in the match. With 39 overs having been lost to rain on Wednesday, though, another draw may beckon. The whole second session was washed out.Bangladesh’s day had begun with promise when Ebadot Hossain bowled nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha with the second ball of the morning, but despite some excellent spells from Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam, and Ebadot himself, the hosts were frustrated by Sri Lanka’s application. Shakib deservedly emerged with the best figures by stumps, with 3 for 59 from his 26 overs. Ebadot had 2 for 78 and went at an even three per over. Taijul kept things tight, maintaining an economy rate of 2.25 across his 28 overs in the innings so far, but did not claim a wicket.

Taijul Islam penalised by ICC

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has been fined 25% of his match fees, and slapped with a demerit point as well, for throwing the ball at Angelo Mathews even though the batter was safe inside his crease and wasn’t looking to take a run.

The incident happened in the 69th over of Sri Lanka’s innings on Wednesday. Taijul, who was the bowler, admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad.

When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player

Sri Lanka’s most-productive partnership was the 102-run stand between Mathews and de Silva, who brought contrasting approaches to their innings. Mathews was sedate, venturing only two boundaries in the 76 balls he faced before lunch, before eventually plodding to 58 off 153 by stumps. He left many, defended even more, and subsisted off singles for large portions of his innings, hitting only five boundaries. The most exciting moment of his knock came when he launched Shakib over long off for six to reach his 38th Test fifty.De Silva was more ambitious during his 58 off 95, though he also rode his luck more than Mathews. He whipped Khaled Ahmed for four through square leg second ball and continued to look proactively for runs, getting to 30 off 40 before rains forced the umpires to call lunch five balls early. During that early period, he had under-edged a ball close to his stumps as well. He slowed down a touch after the downpour, but was nevertheless keen to punish errors of length. Shakib got him out roughly midway through the final session, with a turning ball that took a faint edge en route to the wicketkeeper. Bangladesh had to win that out decision with a review. After de Silva left, Dinesh Chandimal forged a sedate partnership with Mathews. They saw out 55 balls together, but made only 16, though they did have the waning light to contend with.Earlier in the day, Bangladesh may have dreamt of a wicket-filled Wednesday when they dismissed the overnight batters in the first hour. Ebadot angled his wicket ball into Rajitha, then got it to seam away to beat the outside edge and hit off stump – a delivery that might have had a far more competent batter in trouble.Shakib’s deliciously tossed-up ball to Karunaratne had come somewhat against the run of play, as Karunaratne had begun to seem comfortable at the crease. But having darted several in earlier in that over, Shakib tempted the batter to come forward for a big drive, then got the ball to dip, and spin between his bat and pad, and into middle stump. Karunaratne had added only ten to his overnight score of 70.Sri Lanka have some batting to come (No. 9 Ramesh Mendis is a batting allrounder in domestic cricket), so Bangladesh will now have to effect a collapse to claim a first-innings lead. Batting last on this surface will not be easy, however. There were signs the ball was beginning to take a significant turn on Wednesday, and there was also variable bounce for the seamers.
