Dubey and Shubham give MP solid start after Sarfaraz racks up another ton

Mumbai are still ahead by 251 runs but MP’s strong start hangs final in the balance

Sarfaraz Khan scored his fourth century of the season on day 2•PTI

Madhya Pradesh slowly chipped away at the runs and have built a base camp from which they will look to scale Mumbai’s first innings score of 374 as the Ranji Trophy final is delicately poised going into the third day in Bengaluru.Having taken a wicket off the second ball to have Mumbai 248 for 6, they saw Sarfaraz Khan rally with the lower order to make his fourth century of the season. However, MP hung in there and made a solid beginning to their own innings, finishing on 123 for 1 at stumps, trailing Mumbai by 251.Yash Dubey, out to two somewhat debatable calls in the semi-finals, was unbeaten on 44. He was overshadowed by Shubham Sharma, who battled a lot more positively to keep the scoreboard moving along, thereby giving Prithvi Shaw and co something to think about as an all-out attacking field slowly spread out as the final session progressed. Towards the end, Dubey managed to even overtake Shubham as their partnership was worth 76.All said, Mumbai still have the runs to play with but MP won’t be too disappointed either, given they are also playing an extra batter in debutant Parth Sahani. Their stonewaller Himanshu Mantri would be disappointed, though, missing out on a start as he fell for 31 in the first over after tea as he played all around a full Tushar Deshpande delivery to be trapped lbw. It broke a stubborn 47-run opening stand to lift Mumbai after the fast bowlers probed away without much luck prior to the tea interval. After tea, Dubey and Shubham raised a half-century stand off 89 deliveries. Just as they were beginning to look increasingly at ease, a change of ball in the final session seemed to make a difference as Deshpande and Mohit Avasthi forced the batters to shut shop by delivering a probing spell of reverse swing bowling as stumps loomed.Reverse swing aside, Avasthi, the first-change bowler, impressed in short bursts, occasionally getting the ball to rear up to make Dubey uncomfortable, but he couldn’t sustain it for long enough. As spin came on, both batters kept milking runs. Shams Mulani, easily Mumbai’s best bowler so far this season with 37 scalps at an average of 15.64, was particularly picked off with ease. He conceded 46 runs in 11 wicketless overs. More than the runs, that he couldn’t even cause a flutter would worry the team management. The morning entirely belonged to Mumbai as Sarfaraz bailed the team out with the lower order. He found some staunch resistance from Dhawal Kulkarni as he got to a well-constructed eighth first-class century. It took him 152 balls to get to a half-century, and only 38 more for him to complete the hundred. He was particularly severe on the spinners as he used the full-blooded sweep to good effect. The first eight overs produced just 10, but Sarfaraz was happy to play himself in and temper his game to give bowlers the first hour. He reined in his shots, resisted temptation to try and pick off cheeky boundaries like he usually does, focused fully on playing orthodox cricket. After Mulani was out second ball, Tanush Kotian barely survived, pushing, and prodding against the fast bowlers before an unplayable delivery got him when Gaurav Yadav bowled him with a superb away-swinger to flatten his off stump. Yadav, who wheeled away without any luck on the opening day, had four wickets to show for his efforts by the end.Kulkarni’s stonewall for a better part of an hour allowed Sarfaraz to play big shots. He got to a century with a lofted hit down the ground off Kumar Kartikeya’s left-arm spin. His animated celebration thereafter had the sparse crowd, national selectors and his team-mates give him a standing ovation. He added 34 runs more but eventually fell playing one big shot too many. By then, Mumbai were in an excellent position, leaving MP to do all the running to try and remain in the game, which they have.

Sky Sports: Liverpool in talks and ready to pay £21m for Trent replacement

Liverpool are now in direct talks over a move for an “unbelievable” player, who has been identified as a priority target to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to a report.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool future still in doubt

Alexander-Arnold is still yet to commit to a new contract at Anfield, with Real Madrid holding a strong interest in the right-back’s signature, but the Reds are doing everything they can to keep hold of the 26-year-old.

A bumper new contract offer has been tabled in a bid to keep Alexander-Arnold on Merseyside for a further five years. However, as yet there are no signs the right-back is willing to commit to fresh terms.

As such, Arne Slot has now started to look at replacements for the England international, and last week it was revealed that Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich is of interest, with his £300k-per-week contract set to expire in the summer.

Now, there has been a new update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Kimmich, with Sky Sports France reporting that direct talks have now been held over a deal for the versatile defender.

The Reds have now identified the German as their priority target, in the event that Alexander-Arnold exits Anfield, as they are particularly impressed by his versatility.

The Merseyside club would even be willing to spend €25m (£21m) to get a deal done this winter, rather than waiting for the summer, casting doubt over his future at the Allianz Arena.

The Bundesliga side had previously been confident about agreeing a new contract with the 29-year-old, but it remains to be seen whether he would be interested in a move to Anfield.

Kimmich could be the ideal Alexander-Arnold replacement

Trent is widely regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world, so it is promising news that Liverpool could replace him with a player of a similar quality, with Kimmich being lauded as “unbelievable” by Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount.

The Germany international is capable of playing at right-back and central midfield, making him a versatile option for Slot, and it also means that Conor Bradley could be afforded more opportunities at right-back.

That said, Liverpool will still be hoping that their academy graduate agrees to extend his stay at Anfield, considering how big a part he has played in their success for a number of years.

Alexander-Arnold’s attacking talents have been on show once again this season, picking up five goal contributions in 18 Premier League games, while also finding the back of the net with a fine strike against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup at the weekend.

However, New Zealand will be without fast bowler Adam Milne and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner. While Milne has a tight Achilles that’s troubling him, Santner joined the squad only on Saturday after he had tested positive for Covid last Sunday, and couldn’t depart from New Zealand with the rest of the squad.Shane Jurgensen, New Zealand’s head coach for the Ireland tour, also confirmed Henry Nicholls would bat in the middle order for them.”Excited to announce there’s going to be two guys representing New Zealand for the first time in one-day internationals: Finn Allen, who’ll be opening the batting, and Glenn Phillips in the middle order,” Jurgensen said in a video posted by NZC on Twitter. “Both players have done extremely well in the T20 arena and it’s a fantastic opportunity to represent New Zealand tomorrow. Really excited to see how they come out in the first game of the series.”New Zealand are touring Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands without a number of first-choice players such as regular captain Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Devon Conway. Sheffield United could land Billy Sharp 2.0 in "unbelievable" forward

With only one win next to their name this January to date, Sheffield United are in desperate need of getting back to winning ways when facing off against Norwich City this coming Saturday in the Championship.

If lady luck is on the Blades’ side, they could well leap into the top two automatic promotion spots come full-time versus the Canaries, with Chris Wilder’s men needing Burnley and Sunderland to slip up alongside picking up three points themselves.

Chris Wilder

To aid his team’s chances of going up automatically, Wilder will be crying out for more from the attackers he currently possesses, with the Blades arguably lacking the same star power as other teams near the top of the second-tier table.

Sheffield United's striker issues

Whilst West Bromwich Albion boast a deadly Josh Maja leading the line with 12 goals, and Leeds United have the likes of Joel Piroe who can find the back of the net at a moment’s notice, the fellow promotion hopefuls don’t quite strike fear into the heart of Championship defences in a similar way.

Of course, they do have seasoned EFL strikers such as Kieffer Moore and Tyrese Campbell – who have a combined career goal haul of 96 playing in the tricky division – but both are prone to picking up injuries, away from also going through barren patches of form.

Indeed, the Welshman has only fired home five league goals this season, with Campbell only bettering the ex-Cardiff City man by one.

Therefore, it’s no great shock to read most of the transfer rumours involving the Blades this January centre in on their desire to pick up a new potent attacker, with Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz both being linked heavily with switches to South Yorkshire.

Away from those two names, the promotion candidates are also considering an ambitious swoop for this marksman, who once called Bramall Lane his home before much like the Chilean.

Wilder could now sign Sharp 2.0

According to football journalist Alan Nixon – as has been relayed by The Yorkshire Post – United are still pursuing the signature of former star Oli McBurnie this month, despite already having an approach blocked by his current employers Las Palmas.

Often, it would be frowned upon trying to make a reunion happen, but as was the case when Billy Sharp triumphantly returned to Bramall Lane, bringing back the passionate Scotsman for a second stint could prove to be a success instead of an ill-fated move.

After all, Wilder managed to get a tune out of McBurnie more times than not during his time at the club in the past, with this well-taken strike one of six goals the ex-Swansea City man managed to bag for his side in the Premier League during the 2019-20 season.

He would depart for Spain having fired home an unspectacular 29 goals in total for the Blades from 159 appearances, but Sharp would initially leave his boyhood club in a similarly underwhelming manner back in 2009, having fired home just eight Championship strikes across his two previous seasons.

The rest is history now, however, with Sharp returning to become a hall-of-famer for the South Yorkshire side, with a hefty 129 goals next to his name now from 377 total appearances.

The 28-year-old target has also proven himself in the past to be a goal machine playing in the league below the Premier League, leading to shouts back in 2023 from former teammate John Egan that the imposing forward is “unbelievable” for the level.

Overall, the 6 foot 2 striker has a sizeable tally of 44 strikes next to his name when playing in the second tier, and much like Sharp managed upon his re-entry to Bramall Lane, McBurnie will hope he can take his game to the next level if he does return to catapult Wilder’s men back up to the Premier League.

Tottenham now exploring January move for "outstanding" £127k-p/w midfielder

Tottenham are now reportedly exploring a potential January move to land a new midfielder to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s ranks in the winter window as they look to turn their season around.

Tottenham are the Premier League entertainers

No club has scored more Premier League goals than Tottenham this season, with three more against Liverpool taking their tally to 39. The problem for them has been that the results haven’t been as positive, with their 6-3 thrashing by the league leaders leaving them stranded in 11th place over Christmas, with more defeats than wins so far this season.

Postecoglou has already told fans that he will not be changing his style of play any time soon despite the adverse results, and doubled down on that claim after the loss to Liverpool.

“If people want me to change my approach, it is not going to change,” he explained after the game. “We are doing it for a reason. We are doing it because we think it will help us to be successful.”

He will need reinforcements in the transfer window in order to be able to continue his rebuild in north London, and Spurs have been strongly linked with another centre-back to help alleviate their concerns at the back, with teenage midfielder Archie Gray currently being asked to fill in alongside Radu Dragusin. Now, they could also look further forward in a bid to add yet more goals to their game.

Tottenham explore January Bundesliga raid

That comes according to reports in Spain, which claim that Tottenham are exploring a potential move to sign Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund as early as the January transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt.

The German midfielder, who has previously been strongly linked with a move to north London rivals Arsenal, has been a key part of Nuri Sahin’s Borussia Dortmund side and has started all 12 Bundesliga games that he has been available for.

A goal and an assist in his most recent outing against Wolfsburg took his tally to nine goal contributions across all competitions this season as he looks to beat his tally of 26 from last campaign.

Just two years ago, he was considered just as important as Jude Bellingham in Dortmund’s high-flying side, with defender Nico Schlotterbeck dubbing him “outstanding” and adding that “Jule, along with Jude Bellingham, has been our standout player so far this season”.

Enquiry made: Tottenham now want rapid new £73k-p/w Van de Ven alternative

But the forward is down to the final 18 months of his £127,000 a week deal at Signal Iduna Park, and previous reports have suggested that the club are willing to cash in on the 28-year-old, something that has seemingly caught Tottenham’s eye.

According to the report, Spurs have “begun exploring the possibility” of his arrival in north London and talks “could progress during the winter transfer window”.

No price tag is mentioned, and it seems unlikely that Dortmund would be willing to let him leave cheaply midway through the season. Meanwhile, Spurs are more likely to focus on defensive additions in January, with their options in midfield not stretched as thinly as those in front of their own goal. As a result, a summer move could be more likely for the Germany international.

Amar Virdi joins Somerset from Surrey on short-term loan deal

Amar Virdi, the Surrey offspinner, has joined Somerset on a short-term loan, and will be available for the club’s trip to face Lancashire at Southport, starting on Monday.Virdi, whose prowess has earned him England Lions recognition, has been surplus to Surrey’s requirements this season, with their new head coach, Gareth Batty, preferring to hone the allround skills of Will Jacks as the team’s premier offspinner. Now, however, with Jack Leach unavailable to Somerset due to his England involvement, Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, has seen Virdi, 23, as the ideal stand-in.”Jack Leach is unavailable for the match against Lancashire, and with Amar currently not playing First XI cricket, we felt he could add real balance to our team at Southport,” Hurry said.”Having previously worked with him within the England U19 programme, and with Jason having worked with him with England Lions, we have a strong awareness of his ability with the ball and his character. He is a quality spinner with genuine international aspirations, and we are delighted to be able to welcome him into our environment.”Virdi made his County Championship debut against Essex in 2017 and featured in 40 first-class matches to date, claiming 123 wickets at an average of 29.73. His best match figures of 14 for 139 came against Nottinghamshire in 2019.

USWNT star Trinity Rodman made an instant impact on her return to national team duty, scoring within five minutes to put the team ahead of Brazil Saturday in Los Angeles. It was her first action since her stellar run in last year's Olympics, as she's been sidelined with a back injury.

The injury gained national attention after she mentioned her back might not ever be 100 percent again.

Following her stunning finish, Rodman poked fun at the response to the injury by pretending to limp and hold her back.

Rodman's return is significant for Emma Hayes' side as the USWNT have had some inconsistent stretches, especially in attack, since the Olympics. Part of that has been down to the availability of several players, especially the Triple Espresso trio of Sophia Wilson, Rodman and Mallory Swanson.

While Wilson is expected to be out for some time after announcing she's pregnant, Rodman's reemergence gives Hayes another dimension on the attack

Sky Sports: Man Utd hold direct talks to sign ‘superstar’ who’s Cavani 2.0

Manchester United are hoping that the worst of their bad form is now firmly behind them. It has not been easy for Ruben Amorim so far, with the Portuguese boss now 12 games into his tenure at Old Trafford.

Manchester United's Altay Bayindir

In that time, the Red Devils have won just four games, drawing twice and losing six. They have struggled defensively, conceding more goals than they have scored, specifically 23 conceded compared to 19 scored.

Yet, the foundations are beginning to be laid. Jamie Carragher pointed out after United’s 2-2 draw away to Liverpool that it was “almost a win for the manager in terms of his system”, and there are early signs of positive strides.

Adding some attacking firepower to this side could be what United need and they have been linked with someone who could do just that.

Man United targeting new attacker

The player in question here is Paris Saint-Germain and France attacker Randal Kolo Muani. It seems almost certain that the 26-year-old will depart the French capital this winter, but the destination currently remains to be soon.

However, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany, a move to the Red Devils is “becoming more concrete’ this January, with the English club “now determined to do everything possible to secure his transfer” soon. Indeed, Plettenberg revealed that “direct negotiations” have already taken place.

However, they are not the only club chasing the striker on loan with an option to buy. Premier League rivals Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested, as are Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan.

Why Kolo Muani would be a good signing

It has been a really tough campaign so far in 2024/25 for Kolo Muani. The Frenchman has played just 14 games in all competitions, and a total of just scoring twice and registering one assist, all of which came in Ligue 1.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

He started off the season in a really strong way, with a goal on the opening day of the season against Le Havre. Two games later, he got his second goal of the season, this time against Lille off the bench in a 3-1 win.

Despite what has been a tough season at PSG for Kolo Muani in 2024/25, he has shown he can be a deadly all-round attacker.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Firstly, his electric form for Eintracht Frankfurt earned him the £76.4m move to the French capital. He scored 26 goals and grabbed 17 assists in 50 games for the club.

For his country, the Frenchman has got a really strong record. In 27 caps so far, he has eight goals and four assists. That includes a goal on the biggest stages in both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.

Kolo Muani for France.

Signing players from PSG, or at least whose last club was PSG, has worked out well for United in the past. This is going back further than Manuel Ugarte, for whom the jury is still out after only signing last summer.

Edinson Cavani was the last player to make United his next club after leaving the Ligue 1 outfit. He joined on a free transfer in 2020 after his contract expired and became a cult hero at Old Trafford despite playing his best football during lockdown when there were no fans.

The Uruguayan legend was a pure goalscorer, once described as a “genius” by another former United striker, Dion Dublin. He scored 19 times in 59 games for the English giants, grabbing six along the way.

His best season came in his first campaign for the club, 2020/21, where his 17 goals and five assists in 39 appearances helped United to the Europa League final and second place in the Premier League. It was certainly as good as Kolo Muani’s first season at Frankfurt.

If Kolo Muani can get anywhere close to the numbers that the Red Devils’ former number seven put up, then he will surely earn himself cult hero status just like Cavani. He will certainly be hoping to make a potential move to United just as successful.

Randal Kolo Muani

In fact, United might have a “future superstar” on their hands. That is what German legend Lothar Matthaus described him as during his time in Frankfurt.

If Kolo Muani can rediscover that form, he might well end up surpassing Cavani’s legacy at Old Trafford.
