Brighton now plotting move to sign "incredible" new Premier League winner

As Brighton & Hove Albion look to complete their transfer genius once again, those at The Amex have reportedly set their sights on signing a Premier League winner for Fabian Hurzeler.

Brighton transfer news

The Seagulls rarely get things wrong in the transfer market. In fact, they’ve arguably stolen more headlines than most for how they seem to get it right time and time again, even as they’re forced to restructure in the technical area and on the pitch.

What sums them up more than anything is just how seamlessly Hurzeler slotted straight in after replacing Roberto De Zerbi and becoming the youngest manager in Premier League history.

Now, with the January transfer window now open, it looks as though Brighton could act once again if the right opportunity presents itself. It looked as though, for example, the Seagulls had set their sights on Vitor Reis only for Manchester City to since provide tough competition in pursuit of the young Brazilian centre-back.

City’s interest suggests that Brighton were certainly right to target the 18-year-old in what could still be a repeat of past deals for the likes of Julio Enciso and Alexis Mac Alliser. This time around, however, those in Sussex could look closer to home for a young talent.

According to Sky Sports, Brighton are now plotting a move to sign Harvey Elliott from Liverpool if his current struggle for game time under new manager Arne Slot continues in the next two transfer windows.

After playing a key part in Jurgen Klopp’s final two seasons, Elliott’s ill-timed injury at the beginning of Slot’s tenure has left him low down in the pecking order and perhaps pondering whether he has a place at Anfield for the first time.

"Incredible" Elliott could take Brighton up a level

Still somehow just 21 years old despite already being a Premier League winner and a player who’s been in or around the Liverpool squad for three seasons now, Elliott could quickly prove to be the Reds’ greatest transfer regret if they allow Brighton to come swooping in. The Seagulls, meanwhile, would be landing a potential game-changer.

Harvey Elliott and Jurgen Klopp

Whilst he is yet to get a consistent opportunity under Slot, the young midfielder played a key role under Klopp and earned the German’s praise in 2022 when he returned from injury with a bang against Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

Speaking to reporters, as relayed by The Guardian, Klopp said: “Coming on is a great step back, scoring the goal makes it a proper fairytale. Harvey Elliott’s goal was very touching. I have known him for a while now, I know what an incredible talent he is and an incredible kid he is. When we lost him at Leeds (leg injury), it was one of the hardest moments of my career.”

Consistency has, however, proved to be an issue at times. Demanding head coach Roberto Di Zerbi has also asked the odd question of Greenwood’s attitude and commitment, leading to spells on the bench being taken in.

Greenwood is, however, very much back in favour at present. He bagged a brace during his latest appearance in the French top-flight, as Marseille swept their way to a crushing 5-1 victory over Montpellier.

Greenwood now has 18 Ligue 1 goals to his name. Only two players have bettered that return during their first season with Marseille. Chelsea legend Didier Drogba found the target on 19 occasions in 2003-04, while ex-Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis hit 20 during a productive loan spell in 2016-17.

Arsenal now ready to smash £48m release clause for "world-class" forward

Arsenal are now ready to smash the release clause in a “world-class” forward’s contract to get a deal done this summer, according to a report.

Latest on Arsenal's pursuit of a striker

The Gunners ultimately opted not to increase their efforts to sign a new striker on deadline day, despite the fact Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins was desperate to move to the Emirates Stadium, having been a boyhood fan of the club.

Paul Merson was among those keen for the interest in Watkins to be stepped up in the closing stages of the January transfer window, saying: “I would get Watkins. I hear Arsenal fans say he’s 29. Who cares? It’s for now, next year and the year after. After that, it doesn’t matter.

“Put in £100m! If they do that, I’d be shocked if Villa turned that down!”

However, it seems as though Mikel Arteta has decided to re-assess his options in the summer, with the likes of Jonathan David and Benjamin Sesko being discussed as potential targets.

Arteta was chasing a striker throughout the winter transfer window, but Football Transfers have now dropped an update on a target in another position, claiming Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is the top target in attacking midfield.

The Gunners tried to sign Williams in January, but they were unable to get a deal done. However, they are showing a willingness to rekindle their interest in the summer. The north Londoners are even willing to pay above the €58m (£48m) release clause to get the deal over the line, displaying a real eagerness to sign the attacking midfielder.

The Spaniard is keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium, particularly because a number of his international teammates are currently plying their trade for Arsenal, namely David Raya and Mikel Merino, while Martin Zubimendi is poised to join in the summer.

The Spain international caught the eye with his impressive performances for his national side en-route to their Euro 2024 triumph, and he has put in some equally impressive displays at club level for Athletic Club.

The winger, who is capable of playing on either flank, amassed eight goals and 19 assists for the Spanish side in 37 matches last term, and he has gone on to prove himself in Europe this season, picking up two goals and two assists in the Europa League.

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal are positioning themselves for a summer deal, and they will be hoping the allure of playing in the Champions League will be enough to tempt Williams into leaving his boyhood club.

The Cameroon goalkeeper's season has been littered with a string of errors as United look set to record their worst ever Premier League finish. Onana has struggled since his switch to Old Trafford from Inter Milan and may seek a move away to regain his confidence and form. are reporting that Neom SC, set to be promoted to the Saudi Pro League next season, have opened "major discussions" with the player and will attempt to persuade him to move to the Middle East.

Before his switch to Old Trafford, Onana was widely considered one of the leading goalkeepers in the world. His performances in the Champions League for Inter Milan were crucial in their route to the 2023 final and few would have expected his form to fall off a cliff so drastically. A clean break away from Old Trafford could be the best move for all parties.

Manchester United are already considering alternatives to Onana as they look to strengthen their options between the sticks. They have been linked with Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but the club will no doubt be considering a whole host of new number ones.

Onana still has time to turn his fortunes around at Old Trafford and become a cult hero. The Red Devils travel to Bournemouth on Sunday as they look to finish their Premier League season with a sliver of respect. More importantly, they face Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-final in midweek as they look to sneak into next season's Champions League.

Amorim requests Man Utd to sign £50m+ star with Dorgu as INEOS prepare bid

After admitting that his side could be the worst Manchester United team in the club’s history, Ruben Amorim has reportedly requested the signing of a key defensive reinforcement this month.

Man Utd transfer news

When Amorim accepted Manchester United’s offer to become Erik ten Hag’s replacement, he would have been aware of just how great a challenge he had on his hands. However, not even he would have believed that, just months later, he’d be making stark admissions about the lack of quality in his side.

Whether the former Sporting Club manager should have made such a statement is up for debate, but he may not have been wrong in his assessment. The Red Devils currently sit 13th after 22 Premier League games and sit closer to the relegation zone than any European place. To say they need reinforcements would be an understatement.

On that front, names such as Patrick Dorgu have threatened to steal the headlines. The Lecce defender could instantly solve Amorim’s wing-back problem with those at Old Trafford now reportedly set to open negotiations in pursuit of his signature this month. But he’s not the only one who could arrive.

According to reports in Spain, Amorim has now requested Man Utd to sign Ousmane Diomande alongside Dorgu with INEOS now preparing an offer worth €60m (£51m) to hand United a much-needed defensive boost.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-gossip-arsenal-sporting-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

What would undoubtedly help Amorim is the fact that Diomande is a familiar face who already knows his system incredibly well, given that the defender enjoyed great success working under Amorim during their time together at Sporting.

Amorim desperately needs "complete" Diomande at Man Utd

Manchester United’s struggles under Amorim shouldn’t really come as too great a surprise. After all, they are playing a back three system with arguably just one defender who arguably suits such a set-up in Harry Maguire and attempting to implement wing-backs without having one natural wing-back within their current squad. The reality is that it’s been square pegs in round holes since the arrival of their new manager.

Diomande could, therefore, ease their problems. A defender who has thrived within a back three under Amorim and a player who is only set to get even better at just 21 years old, £51m could quickly turn into a bargain deal. Dubbed “complete” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Diomande is certainly one to watch.

That said, Diomande must only be the start of Manchester United’s reinforcements as they look to build Amorim a side simply capable of thriving in his preferred system at Old Trafford.

Arsenal ready to table £59 million offer for "crazy" Serie A superstar

Arsenal are ready to put no less than £59 million on the table to sign a “crazy” Serie A superstar who has scored 14 goals this season, according to a new report.

Arsenal forced into market after more forward injuries

Arsenal have had a difficult few weeks. After losing the first-leg of their EFL Cup semifinal clash with Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta’s side were then dumped out of the FA Cup by struggling Manchester United on penalties.

A win over North London rivals Tottenham followed, but at the weekend, the Gunners again came unstuck, drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

To add insult to injury, it was confirmed last week that striker Gabriel Jesus, who had been in a rich vein of form with six goals in his last five games, sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the defeat to United. The Brazilian is set to undergo surgery for the injury, and is now expected to miss the rest of the season.

In wake of Jesus’ season-ending injury, Arteta confirmed that the Gunners will be looking to sign a new forward this month.

“My answer doesn’t change,” Arteta said last week when asked about signing a new forward. “We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad and that has been since day one.

“We would be naive not to do that because it is an opportunity, always, to evolve the team and improve the squad, and especially with the circumstances that we have. So yes, we are looking and we are trying, and let’s see what we are able to do.”

Arsenal ready to bid for Inter star

One striker who is reportedly interesting Arsenal is Inter Milan and France star Marcus Thuram. The 27-year-old has 14 goals and six assists in 26 games for Inter this season, and according to TV Play, via Sports Witness, Arsenal are now prepared to table as much as £59 million for him.

The publication says Thuram is Arteta’s “big dream” but that Inter won’t be willing to part ways with him in January, meaning the Spaniard will have to wait until the summer to land his man.

Thuram, who joined Inter in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Monchengladbach, has previously been described as “crazy” by his former Gladbach teammate Denis Zakaria.

“He is a great guy, a little crazy maybe, but what he brings to the pitch is phenomenal,” said the Swiss midfielder.

Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer has also called him a “world class striker,” while Thuram’s ex-Gladbach boss Daniel Farke once described him as “an exceptional player of the highest international class”.

Big, strong, fast and a clinical finisher, Thuram would certainly be a fine acquisition for any club, let alone Arsenal, who are in dire need of a new striker, and not just because of Jesus’ injury. Kai Havertz has yet to prove he has what he takes to lead the line and score regular goals for the Gunners. Thuram has been doing exactly that for Inter.

Skerritt blames batters in scathing attack after West Indies' T20 World Cup exit

Simmons: Batters need to take a look at themselves

Ricky Skerritt, the Cricket West Indies president, has promised a “thorough postmortem” in a scathing assessment of the team’s early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.In a statement posted on CWI’s website and on Twitter, Skerritt laid the blame firmly at the feet of West Indies’ batters, saying their poor shot selection and failure against spin was key to the two-time champions bowing out in the first round of the tournament in Australia.Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Ireland – who defeated West Indies by nine wickets on Friday – advanced to the Super 12s with two wins from three matches apiece in the first round.”I am deeply disappointed with the performance results of our team in Australia and I appreciate the sense of utter frustration that is being experienced by many,” Skerritt’s statement said. “The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued to be an obvious weakness in Australia, and untimely shot selections seem to be deeply embedded in the T20 batting culture of our senior team.”West Indies have lost six of the eight matches they have played in T20 World Cups since their 2016 final triumph in India.Related

Ireland knock out West Indies with commanding victory

In their opening match of this edition, they were bowled out for just 118 chasing 161 against Scotland before managing to defend a modest 153 for 7 against Zimbabwe, thanks to Alzarri Joseph’s 4 for 16 and Jason Holder’s 3 for 12. But Ireland easily overhauled their 146 for 5 on Friday to cruise into the next round. West Indies noticeably struggled against spin through the middle overs in all three of their games.Brandon King’s unbeaten 62 off 48 balls was the sole bright spot of West Indies’ innings against Ireland after they inched their way to 41 for 2 in the powerplay, scoring just five fours and one six in that time. In contrast, Ireland struck six fours and four sixes in the first six overs of their chase.Against Zimbabwe, Johnson Charles – replacing King, who was ill at the time – was West Indies’ top-scorer with 45 off 36 balls, and only four West Indies batters reached double figures against Scotland in a display coach Phil Simmons described as “unprofessional”.Skerritt went on to say that he was determined to find a solution to West Indies’ slide.”I want to assure stakeholders that a thorough postmortem will be carried out on all aspects of our World Cup preparation and performance and that solutions will be found in keeping with CWI’s strategy to improve the quality and sustainability of cricket on all fronts, and in all formats.”West Indies cricket is bigger than any one individual or event and continues to need the input and support of all stakeholders.”

Marcos Leonardo e Alisson disputavam a bola e, antes dela sair, o jogador do São Paulo tentou segurá-la.

Worth more than Munetsi: Wolves have hit the jackpot on "high-energy" star

It was a busy transfer deadline day for Wolverhampton Wanderers, and they certainly needed reinforcements.

The Old Gold have struggled this season in the Premier League, and are currently 17th in the top flight. Their 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend saw them climb out of the relegation zone.

However, signing were needed, and the West Midlands outfit made two deadline day additions to strengthen Vitor Pereira’s squad. One of those signings was Red Star Belgrade defender Nasser Djiga, who is the second defensive signing of the window after Emmanuel Agbadou.

The Old Gold also recruited a new midfielder to replace outgoing Mario Lemina, with Marshall Munetsi signing for the club.

Why Wolves signed Munetsi

Zimbabwean international midfielder Munetsi joined from French outfit Reims in the final few hours of the window. He is, essentially, a direct replacement for Lemina, who rejoined Galatasaray for £2.5m.

Munetsi is an experienced operator in the midfield and has played 159 times for the Ligue 1 side over the course of five seasons. The 28-year-old has managed 35 goals and assists in that time, and can play as a number six, a number eight or a number 10. It’s certainly excellent versatility for Pereira to call upon.

This season, the midfielder, who hails from Harare in Zimbabwe, has played 21 times in all competitions, scoring four goals and grabbing two assists. That included a smart lay-off against Paris Saint Germain to create Reims equaliser in their recent 1-1 draw.

There is no doubt that Munetsi, who has skippered the French side at times this season, adds experience and leadership to the Old Gold squad. He cost them a reported £17m, which seems a good price when considering the current market.

As it happens, the West Midlands side have a player who might be even more important in their fight against relegation, and he could be set to star alongside Munetsi.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

The Wolves player worth more than Munetsi

The player in question here is Wolves’ Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes. Despite the fact it has been such a tough season for the Old Gold, Gomes has been excellent again, and a key player in the midfield.

The 23-year-old has played 24 times in all competitions this season, scoring two goals and grabbing two assists. Impressively, he scored and assisted in the Old Gold’s 4-1 thrashing of Fulham at Craven Cottage earlier in the season.

The former Flamengo midfielder, described as a “high-energy” player by football analyst Ben Mattinson, is crucial for Wolves. His ability to break out play in the middle of the pitch, and spring counterattacks for the Molineux side, has been vital this season.

Joao Gomes for Wolves

His stats via FBref show just how well he has played in 2024/25 so far, particularly highlighting his importance off the ball. For example, the midfielder averages 4.33 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes which ranks him in the 77th percentile for midfielders in the Premier League. He is simply vital for Pereira’s men.

Gomes’ value has, perhaps unsurprisingly, shot up, which has certainly coincided with his impressive performances for the West Midlands side. According to CIES Football Observatory, the midfielder is worth as much as £44m.

Not only does that highlight his worth to the Wolves side, but it is well over double the amount that they paid Reims to sign Munetsi on deadline day. Given they paid just £15m to sign him from Flamengo two years ago, it is a big rise.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes

Gomes’ transfer value shows just how important he is for the Old Gold. They have a huge second half of the season ahead, as they battle to stay in the Premier League. The Brazilian, along with Munetsi, will be imperative to their success if they are to stay in the Premier League.
