Leeds move on youngsters in January window

The Whites remain without a new addition for Daniel Farke with just days remaining of the January transfer window. Ahead of Saturday’s Championship encounter with Cardiff City at Elland Road, Farke was quizzed on the speculation surrounding any new arrivals.

“The news is that I have to survive one more press conference”, Farke said on Leeds’ transfer plans.

“I spoke quite open with the whole situation – I’m not a big friend of the January window. Options are limited or overpriced. You always need to do something if you have injuries. If you are top of the league and have a really good season.

“To improve a team playing such a good season, bringing someone in could be risky. We will stay awake for the last hour of the window. We will do something if all boxes are ticked. This group is top of the league after 29 games. We need players who have the right quality, character and is affordable. If not, then we stick with what we’ve got.”

The club have moved on a number of fringe youngsters, though, with Joe Gelhardt joining Hull City on loan and Charlie Crew signing for Doncaster Rovers until the end of the season.

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are in talks with Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic over a move to sign defender Jeremiah Mullen.

The 20-year-old moved to Yorkshire back in 2020 from Liverpool and has been a part of Leeds’ academy set-up ever since, however, he is out of contract at the end of the season.

A deal is yet to be agreed with Dunfermline for the Scotland U21 international, who actually featured in Farke’s first pre-season as Leeds boss in a friendly with Manchester United.

He has featured on 10 occasions for Leeds in Premier League 2 this season, scoring in a 3-0 win at Tottenham back in September.

Mullen, who shares the same CAA Base agency as Tanaka, had a brief spell on loan in Scotland with Inverness, and a move to Dunfermline, currently in the Scottish Championship, could now be on the cards, making this one to watch in the final days of the window.

Aston Villa head into tonight’s Premier League fixture with Liverpool desperate to get back to winning ways in front of their adoring Villa Park faithful.

His debut in claret and blue also saw a confident Asensio take to the pressures of the English game well, with many a trick and flick well executed, alongside walking away from the FA Cup win versus Spurs with a 100% pass accuracy in-tact.

A real threat off the right flank, like Salah, the comparison between the pair – as well as Rashford – has only recently been made by Emery himself:

Asensio could also link up well with the main Villa marksman Ollie Watkins who managed to push his side to a draw against the Tractor Boys with an equalising strike, alongside the fact the former Brentford sharpshooter has five career goals versus the Reds.

Emery will want to see a reaction from his underwhelming troops and there wouldn’t be a better way to respond than beating the league leaders in front of a packed Villa Park, courtesy of some Asensio magic.

West Bromwich Albion are now pushing hard to sign a “technically very strong” midfielder, who has attracted the interest of a whole host of Championship clubs, according to a report.

Baggies in play-off battle

As we approach the end of the January transfer window, West Brom are still well-placed to reach the Championship play-offs, securing their place in the top six with an emphatic 5-1 victory against Portsmouth last time out. However, the final two play-off spots are likely to be hotly-contested, with just six points separating the Baggies from 13th-placed Queens Park Rangers.

As such, new manager Tony Mowbray may be keen to bolster his options before the February 3rd deadline, and he has now set his sights on a striker, targeting St. Gallen forward Willem Geubbels, who is in advanced talks with Luton Town.

A new midfielder is also of interest to Albion, having made contact over a deal to sign Chelsea’s Harvey Vale, who has mainly been limited to reserve football this season, despite an impressive spell on loan at Bristol Rovers in the 2023-24 campaign.

The signing of Vale could be viewed as a risk, given that he is unproven at Championship level, but West Brom have now identified a midfield target who has already proven himself at the level, having won promotion from the second tier last season.

According to a report from Football League World, the Baggies are now pushing hardest to sign Vancouver Whitecaps’ Stuart Armstrong, alongside fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, who are also aiming to reach the play-offs.

Armstrong is attracting interest from a whole host of Championship sides, but Albion and Wednesday are among the frontrunners for his signature.

Armstrong has a track record of success

The 32-year-old helped Southampton to promotion from the second tier last season, registering five goals and seven assists in 42 appearances for the Saints, and he has chalked up 149 appearances in the Premier League.

Not only that, but the £39k-per-week Scotland international has proven himself north of the border, winning eight trophies, including four league titles, during his time with Celtic, where he received high praise from Brendan Rodgers.

The former Celtic man also has a keen eye for goal, as displayed by the fact he ranks in the 97th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers in similar leagues.

As such, Armstrong could be a brilliant acquisition for West Brom as they look to secure their place in the Championship play-offs in the second half of the season.

Jobe Bellingham has been among the best players in the Championship this season, and Real Madrid have apparently been keeping an eye on his progress.

Chelsea’s academy is up there with one of the very best in the country, producing a constant catalogue of talent that have made an impact in the first-team.

Reece James is arguably the most high-profile within Enzo Maresca’s side, racking up over 150 appearances since his debut in 2019 and even being named the club’s captain in the process.

Injuries have massively affected his progress at Stamford Bridge, limiting the 25-year-old to just six Premier League starts throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

Levi Colwill is another academy graduate also in the first team setup, becoming a key player under the Italian, starting all but two of the league matches since his appointment in the summer.

Olise has since starred under Vincent Kompany in the Bundesliga, scoring 11 times and notching nine assists in just 34 matches, with his market value skyrocketing as a result of his impressive form.

The winger, who’s previously been dubbed “world-class” by analyst Ben Mattinson, is now valued at £56.5m by Football Transfers, a figure two times more than that of Mudryk, who’s now only worth £28m.

It’s a real shame to see the Ukrainian fail to make an impact after such hype around the move given the huge transfer fee paid for his services a couple of years ago.

However, it’s evident that the Blues made a huge mistake in allowing Olise to depart, potentially saving themselves a small fortune had they shown more willingness to keep him within the club at a young age.
