Emery must axe Rashford to unleash Aston Villa's "unstoppable" star

Aston Villa face arguably their biggest match of the season tonight as the club travel to Belgium to face Club Brugge in the last-16 of the Champions League.

A win would set them up nicely for the second leg at Villa Park and Unai Emery will be doing everything he possibly can to ensure they return to the Midlands with a lead.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Villa reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win over Cardiff City last week, a game in which Marcus Rashford shone.

Marcus Rashford's impressive numbers since signing for Aston Villa

Since arriving from Manchester United on a six-month loan deal, he has yet to score but has provided three assists. Two came against Chelsea in the Premier League, while another was recorded on Friday evening in the cup.

The Englishman started on the left wing against the Championship side and looked lively throughout, delivering nine crosses into the penalty area, while making six key passes, registering six shots in total and creating two big chances during the game.

It was a sublime performance, one that Emery must have envisaged Rashford delivering upon his arrival. With so many options in the final third, shoehorning everyone in wasn’t going to work. Therefore, the manager had to be patient and find out exactly who works best with who.

It appears as though Rashford and fellow January arrival, Marco Asensio, work extremely well together, shining during the clash against Cardiff.

This depth in the final third could propel the club to win their first major trophy since 1996, as they shouldn’t be counted out in either the FA Cup or Champions League.

That said, the United loanee could be back among the subs on Tuesday evening.

Who should replace Rashford in the Aston Villa lineup

For the tie against Brugge, however, Emery must use the England international as an impact player, bringing Morgan Rogers back into the starting XI.

Rashford last played a match in the Champions League in November 2023 and hasn’t scored at this level since October 2021.

Thus, dropping him to the bench in order to restore Rogers to the starting XI makes perfect sense. The former Middlesbrough sensation scored a hat-trick against Celtic while grabbing an assist during the win over Bologna earlier this season.

Jamie Carragher previously dubbed the youngster as “unstoppable” last year and when in full flow, opposition defences find it extremely difficult to stop him.

As well as his goal contributions in Europe’s premier club competition, Rogers has managed to create three big chances, while averaging 1.6 key passes and succeeding with 3.3 dribbles per game – a success rate of 58% – which has helped Villa reach the last 16 of the competition.

Rashford may have delivered a superb performance against Cardiff, but making that step up to the Champions League after several months away might come too soon.

Therefore, Emery must unleash his trusted lieutenant Rogers against the Belgian outfit this evening, and it is a game where he can utilise his attacking abilities to secure a win for Villa.

Lance Klusener withdraws application to be South Africa white-ball coach

Former allrounder wishes to concentrate on T20 franchise roles instead

Firdose Moonda09-Jan-2023Lance Klusener has withdrawn his application to become South Africa’s next white-ball coach. ESPNcricinfo has confirmed that Klusener was among the six candidates interviewed by Cricket South Africa three weeks ago but has chosen to pull out of the process and concentrate on T20 franchise roles instead. Klusener is currently the coach of the Durban Super Giants in the SA20 tournament, which starts on Tuesday. That leaves CSA with a choice between current interim coach Malibongwe Maketa, former national assistant coach Adrian Birrell, experienced franchise and under-19 coach Shukri Conrad, former Titans coach Rob Walter and former West Indies director of cricket Richard Pybus for the job.South Africa’s head coach role will be split in two, with one person taking over the Test team and keeping involved in the country’s first-class cricket and the other heading up the ODI and T20I sides. Klusener, who played 49 Tests and 179 ODIs, had applied for the latter post. The 51-year old former allrounder was an important member of the South Africa squad between 1996 and 2004, hitting great heights during the 1999 World Cup when he nearly took the team all the way to the final in one of the greatest games ever played. Klusener retired with a reputation for being one of the fiercest hitters of the ball, a talent that fetched him 3576 runs in ODIs at an average of 41.10 and a strike rate of 89.91.Related

Klusener interview: 'I wanted to be there at the end. That was my drug'

CSA is expected to make an announcement by the middle of January with the new white-ball coach set to take charge for the three ODIs against England later this month. Klusener was understood to be the frontrunner for the position, having previously worked with the Dolphins in domestic cricket and with Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in international cricket. Conrad was tipped to take over the Test side.Klusener’s withdrawal potentially opens the door for Maketa, who was temporarily put in charge of the Test side for South Africa’s tour to Australia that ended on Sunday, to continue in the national job. Maketa has put his name forward for both positions, but indicated a preference for the red-ball job. CSA is also looking to fill the position of High Performance Manager, with long-standing coach Vincent Barnes set to retire later this year.

Green injury scare threatens Australia bowling resources for victory push

The allrounder retired hurt on the second evening after a blow on the glove drew blood from his finger

Australia face the prospect of pressing for victory against South Africa at the MCG with a depleted bowling attack after allrounder Cameron Green joined Mitchell Starc with a finger injury, but David Warner is expected to be able to resume his double century on the third day after he retired hurt with cramp.Green was struck on the glove by a 144kph delivery from Anrich Nortje late on the second day which drew blood from his right index finger. Initially, the physio and doctor tried to patch him up on the outfield but he left the ground and was sent for a scan after play.Related

Starc in doubt for Sydney Test with finger injury

Warner joins elite club after scoring double century in his 100th Test

David Warner is back, just as he said he would be

Green’s injury scare follows that of Starc who dislocated the tip of his left middle finger attempting to take a catch at long-on during the opening day’s play. A CA spokesperson said Starc was available to take a further part in the match, and had a brief bowl in the nets before play on Tuesday, although it’s understood he is a major doubt for the Sydney Test. It remains to be seen whether he will bat given Australia already have a sizeable lead.A complicating factor for Starc and Green is the ICC regulations that do not permit bowlers to wear any tape or strapping on their bowling hand which means they are unlikely to be able to protect their injuries.Captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland are the other two frontline quicks while Nathan Lyon can expect a big workload if resources are stretched. Travis Head’s offspin, which has picked up handy wickets this year, and Marnus Labuschagne’s combination of legspin and medium pace could also be called on. Australia secured victory against West Indies in Perth earlier this season without Cummins in the second innings when he suffered a quad injury. It was a busy day for the medics in sweltering conditions that touched 40 degrees in Melbourne. Warner started to suffer cramps in the 56th over when he was in the 120s and they returned in a more severe manner as he neared his double century in the final session. After lengthy treatment on the outfield he brought up the milestone but after barely being able to celebrate he could not resume and was helped off the field. However, after rehydrating in the dressing room the signs were positive for him after play.”I think he’s alright now,” Steven Smith said. “He’s had some fluids. He’s been in the ice bath. He was having some food before so hopefully he can pull up well and get out there next tomorrow. It was pretty energy sapping, it was pretty hot. It wasn’t the most comfortable day the crease. Boys were cramping left, right and centre.”The extreme heat is expected to dissipate overnight with a top of 28 degrees forecast for Wednesday and the potential of some showers interrupting play. The final two days are set to be dry.At the close of the second day Australia held a lead of 197 having flayed South Africa’s attack in a last session that brought 155 runs from 28 overs. Only 79 of the day’s allocation of 90 overs were completed due to various stoppages, largely caused by the heat, which saw an extra drinks break taken as well the treatments for cramp.

Matt Renshaw tests positive for Covid on Test recall

Matt Renshaw has tested positive for Covid shortly after being recalled to Australia’s Test side but for now will continue to take part at the SCG.Renshaw stood separately from team-mates during the anthems after reporting feeling unwell and was then seen sat away from the dugout on the boundary edge.”Australian batter Matthew Renshaw reported feeling unwell shortly before play in the third Test match against South Africa in Sydney and was separated from the squad. Renshaw has since returned a positive RAT test. He will continue to take part in the match,” a CA spokesperson said.Peter Handscomb was earlier listed as an emergency fielder on Australia’s team sheet, meaning he could be drafted in as Covid substitute if needed although he had already been added the previous day in case other non-playing squad members, including reserve batter Marcus Harris, are released for BBL duty. Handscomb, who did not play for Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday, has yet to arrive in Sydney.Players are now permitted to continue in a match even if they test positive for Covid. Tahlia McGrath took part in the Commonwealth Games final against India last year in such a scenario while Matthew Wade was set to play against England at the T20 World Cup before that game was washed out.On the eve of the Test, Pat Cummins had spoken about how it had been a much more normal summer after two years of various restrictions. “I still don’t know how we haven’t had Covid in our team yet now I think about,” he said.Renshaw is playing his first Test since 2018 having been listed to bat at No. 6 in Sydney with Australia opting against five specialist bowlers for the final Test.Instead they have fielded just two frontline quicks, Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, alongside two spinners in the recalled Ashton Agar and Nathan Lyon.During the 2018-19 series against Pakistan in the UAE, Renshaw had been in line for a place in the team before suffering a concussion in the warm-up match.

49ers hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace for Leeds if promoted

Internal talks over signing a “special” number 10 have been held at Leeds United ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Leeds news and updates

There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, but with the Whites looking on course to seal a return to the Premier League, plans behind the scenes will be starting to take shape as they prepare for the likelihood of top-flight football next season.

This week Daniel Farke stated that discussions over new contracts for the soon-to-be free agents have yet to begin. Sam Byram, Junior Firpo, and Josuha Guilavogui’s contracts are all set to expire at the end of the season, and Farke revealed that talks will be held at the right time.

Meanwhile, ahead of the summer transfer window, it has been reported that Manor Solomon could be available for a permanent transfer. The winger is currently on loan at Elland Road from Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s been claimed that he would be allowed to leave on a permanent basis in the summer if an opportunity is presented.

Solomon has made a big impact since joining Leeds, being a key player in their attack, as he was crowned the club’s player of the month in January.

Leeds hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace

Solomon is not the only player the Whites have their eyes on ahead of the summer, as according to TEAMtalk, Leeds have held internal talks over a move to sign James McAtee from Manchester City if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

The report states that the Championship outfit will prioritise signing a new number 10 in the summer, with interest remaining in Emi Buendia, who was a target during January but ended up joining Bayer Leverkusen instead. As well as Buendia, Leeds also hold interest in Eduard Spertsyan, Gustavo Hamer and McAtee, who could be available for a loan move next season.

Before this campaign, McAtee enjoyed two rather successful loan spells at Sheffield United, and instead of going on loan again, Man City decided to keep him at the Etihad this season. However, the midfielder has only played 16 times for the Blues, struggling to make an impact in the starting XI.

The 22-year-old has failed to start in the Premier League or Champions League, with the majority of his game time coming in the FA Cup.

Given his lack of game time this season, City could decide to let McAtee leave on loan in the summer, or they could even decide to cash in, but it would cost Leeds and any other interested team £25 million to secure his services that way. Despite not playing regularly, McAtee has been labelled “special” by Pep Guardiola this season.

“I’m so happy for him; he’s a special player,” Guardiola said of McAtee after his hat-trick against Salford City.

Aston Villa planning summer move to sign "heroic" ace Emery name-dropped

Having been among the busiest clubs in the Premier League during the January transfer window, Aston Villa have now reportedly set their sights on a summer target for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans commenced the transfer window in the same fashion that they ended it, welcoming both Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia before ending with a flurry of arrivals in Marco Asensio, Marcus Rashford and Axel Disasi. Signing five players in total whilst showing Diego Carlos and Jhon Duran the door in a big-money deal, the Villans wasted little time.

That’s not to say their problems have been permanently solved, however – particularly at centre-back. Of course, Disasi represents a solid signing, but given that he’s only on loan, it should come as no surprise that Aston Villa have already reportedly turned their attention towards a more long-term option for Emery.

According to The Boot Room, Aston Villa are now planning a summer move to sign Juan Foyth from Villarreal after failing to lure the La Liga side into a January sale.

"Robust" rising star reveals why he just blocked chance to join Aston Villa

A bold choice…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 6, 2025

Emery certainly didn’t shy away from his side’s interest in the defender either, name-dropping him when speaking to reporters towards the end of the window. The Spaniard told reporters: “Of course I know Juan Foyth because I worked with him. He is one player, with his quality, he can unite and play with the qualities and the performance we want to add in the squad.”

The period that Emery referenced when speaking about his work with the defender was certainly a successful one too, having won the Europa League together at Villarreal in the 2020/21 campaign.

"Heroic" Foyth can earn Premier League redemption

Since bowing out at Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, the only way has been up for Foyth who could yet complete a Premier League return and come back to haunt his former club.

A defender who play both as a right-back and centre-back, the Argentine would offer instant cover across two areas for Emery and become the long-term solution that Disasi – on loan from Chelsea – is not at this stage.

Dubbed “heroic” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig after impressing in Villarreal’s 2021 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, Foyth has unfinished business in English football.

Aston Villa’s interest is far from a secret these days, as is Foyth’s own ability. So, when the summer arrives, the 27-year-old certainly looks like one to watch once again as those in the Midlands potentially come calling for a second time.

Celtic must regret selling 76-cap Hatate upgrade for a small fee

Celtic lost Danish attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley, who signed for Brighton & Hove Albion, last summer and Brendan Rodgers splashed the cash to replace him.

The Hoops swooped to sign Belgian star Arne Engels from Bundesliga side Augsburg for a reported fee of £11m, smashing the club’s transfer record, to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

Paulo Bernardo was also signed permanently from Benfica, after his loan spell at Parkhead last season, and Luke McCowan was brought in from Dundee.

So far, Engels has been value for money for the Scottish giants with his contributions at the top end of the pitch. The Belgium international has racked up ten goals and 12 assists in 41 matches in all competitions.

The 21-year-old maestro has showcased his ability to make a big impact in the final third, as a lethal penalty taker and a creator of goals, and is starting to emerge as the star man for Rodgers.

Arne Engels

His exceptional form in the middle of the park for the Scottish Premiership champions has also taken the spotlight away from Reo Hatate, who had a chance to take over from O’Riley last summer.

Reo Hatate's form this season

The Japan international suffered an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign as he ended the season with just three goals and two assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.

He did not get the chance to play week-in-week-out and showcase his quality, and the 27-year-old star may have seen O’Riley’s departure as a chance for him to step up and become the main man for the Hoops.

Unfortunately, it has not quite worked out that way because Engels’ performances have overshadowed Hatate’s work in midfield. The Japanese whiz has scored seven goals and provided five assists in 45 appearances in all competitions, which is a solid, but unspectacular, return.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate has struggled out of possession in the Premiership this season, as opposition players have found it too easy to get the better of him in duels.

The experienced Celtic performer is not a tough-tackling midfielder who holds the team down defensively, but Engels’ form means that he is also not the outstanding attacking force in that area of the pitch either.

Whilst Hatate is still a good option for Rodgers to have, as he has contributed to nine goals in the league, Celtic once let go of a midfielder who is now even better than the Japan international, and got little back in return.

Celtic fumbled Jackson Irvine

Jackson Irvine joined the Scottish giants at U20 level from Australian side Frankston Pines in the January transfer window of 2010 and he rose through the ranks at the academy.

He made his first-team debut for the Hoops against Hibernian in the Premiership in 2012, playing 45 minutes, but that turned out to be his only appearance for the club.

Irvine was sent out on loan to Kilmarnock in the 2013/14 campaign, scoring once in 27 league appearances, before he joined Ross County on loan for the following season.

The Australian midfielder scored two goals and provided two assists in 28 Premiership appearances for Ross County, who then decided that they wanted to sign him permanently.

Where Are They Now

It was reported that the Staggies signed Irvine for a ‘small development fee’ amid interest from Motherwell and Hibernian, although it remains unclear as to exactly how much Celtic received for his services.

Fast-forward to the present day, after spells with Ross County, Burton Albion, Hull City, and Hibernian, Irvine is currently thriving in the Bundesliga with St. Pauli having also registered 76 caps for his country.

Why Celtic should rue selling Jackson Irvine

The 31-year-old star has started all 24 of his appearances in the German top-flight so far this season and caught the eye with seven ‘big chances’ created and five assists – more assists than Hatate has managed in the Premiership.

He has also made 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game and won 50% of his duels in the Bundesliga, which suggests that Irvine provides a strong defensive presence to go along with his attacking qualities.

Engels going from a return of three goals and two assists in 32 Bundesliga games last season to nine goals and five assists in 26 Premiership games this term suggests that the German top-flight is a step up in quality.

This illustrates how impressive Irvine’s performances, in comparison to Hatate’s, have been this season, as he has provided fantastic creativity and defensive strength at a higher level.

It may, therefore, be fairer to compare the former Celtic prospect’s form in the 2. Bundesliga in the 2023/24 campaign, as it may offer a clearer picture as to their respective performance levels at a similar standard of football.

As you can see in the table above, Jackson offers a greater threat at the top end of the pitch whilst also being more effective for his side out of possession, showing that he is a more well-rounded midfield player who can impact games on and off the ball.

This is not to say that Hatate is a bad player or someone the club should be looking to move on from any time soon, but it does suggest that the Hoops should rue their mistake when they let the Australia international leave for a ‘small’ fee back in 2015.

Irvine, who was once branded a “revelation” by former boss Nigel Clough, has impressed in the top two tiers of German football with St. Pauli and has seemingly proven himself to be an even better player than the Japan international, which suggests that Rodgers would love to have him as an option in his current squad.

Unfortunately, Celtic had already allowed Irvine to join Ross County on a permanent deal a year before the Northern Irish head coach arrived at Parkhead for his first spell in charge in 2016.
