Arteta pushing Arsenal to replace Edu with director amid £165m Saudi offer

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is pushing the Gunners to replace ex-sporting director Edu Gaspar with his preferred candidate, coming as the man in question receives a seismic offer from Saudi Arabia.

Why Edu left Arsenal as sporting director in blow for Mikel Arteta

Edu was responsible for the club’s record signing of England star Declan Rice, alongside other high-profile deals which have proved fruitful for the north Londoners, but the Brazilian officially resigned from his post in late 2024.

Working in tandem with Arteta, Edu played a key role in facilitating the club’s transfer deals, and Arsenal have been attempting to cope without his influence ever since. Interim director Jason Ayto’s jumped into the 46-year-old’s stead, with Edu since revealing that he needed a new challenge.

“This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” said Edu after quitting Arsenal.

“Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history. It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they’ve given me.

“I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend. Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”

Edu has since agreed to join Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis’ footballing empire, where he will oversee the running of multiple clubs under his umbrella, including Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, the search for Edu’s long-term heir is believed to remain an ongoing situation at N5.

Ayto could even be considered for the Arsenal role full-time, having worked under Edu as his assistant, while some reports have suggested that Bayer Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes is on Arsenal’s list of potential director candidates.

Mikel Arteta pushing Arsenal to appoint PSG director Luis Campos

According to Football Transfers, PSG director Luis Campos, who is out of contract this year, is also firmly on the Gunners’ radar as an option.

The big-name transfer chief was linked with the role at Tottenham during José Mourinho’s time in charge of the Lilywhites, and his contract situation at the Parc des Princes has sparked interest from a host of elite sides.

Arsenal are among the clubs pushing to appoint Campos, alongside both Chelsea and Saudi Arabia, with the latter presenting an offer worth around £165 million over the course of 10 years.

The Saudis want Campos to head an ambitious project, where he will oversee the development of an elite youth academy, which will eventually form a club side to compete in the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, it is believed Arteta is personally driving Arsenal’s interest in Campos, as the Spaniard is convinced the chief’s footballing expertise could help to end the club’s two-decade-plus long wait for a title.

James Coles steals the Steven Smith show with classy maiden hundred

Glamorgan 123 and 118 for 1 (Byrom 57) trail Sussex 481 (Coles 138, Smith 89, Haines 58) by 240 runsCome for the Australian great, stay for the local rising star. There was a Sussex centurion on day two at Hove but it was not, as had been expected, Steven Smith. Instead, 19-year-old James Coles took the acclaim on a sun-dappled afternoon by the south coast, with a maiden first-class hundred that put his side into a position of considerable strength against the visitors, Glamorgan.Smith made 89 and could perhaps feel aggrieved after receiving his third lbw decision in three innings for Sussex – this one the most marginal of the lot. He seemed content with the workout, nevertheless, even if the expected hefty victory for his side, after they took a 358-run lead on first innings, may mean he won’t get to bat again before joining up with Australia ahead of the World Test Championship final (and the small matter of the Ashes thereafter).Glamorgan dug in to be one-down at the close, with conditions having eased considerably since their implosion on the first morning. Marnus Labuschagne resumed his pre-Ashes tango with Ollie Robinson, and their contest should provide another compelling reason for spectators to turn up for day three. Come for the ICC’s No. 1-ranked batter, stay for the possibility of a resounding home victory (so long as the ICC’s No. 1-ranked batter doesn’t bat all day…)Some 1000 schoolchildren received free entry to the ground on Friday, through the Sussex Cricket Foundation, and there was no doubt who had top billing in their eyes, as Smith patiently signed autographs and posed for selfies during the lunchbreak. Coles is not long out of school himself, and may have inspired one or two to want to follow in his footsteps when he punched Jamie McIlroy crisply through the covers shortly after the interval to take his score into three figures for the first time.Coles did not start the season in Sussex’s first XI but has now made scores of 74, 14, 70 and 138. A product of the club’s development partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board, he became the youngest player ever to make a first-class debut for Sussex, at 16 years and 157 days, during the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020 – although discussion of this fact in the press box was met with the query, “What about John Barclay?” Since the former Sussex captain and cricket committee chair was sitting upstairs, it was possible to confirm that Barclay was, in fact, 16 years and seven months (or 205 days) when selected in the XI to play Jamaica at Hove in August 1970.That digression dealt with, Sussex’s day could be put in its full context. Coles began it in the company of Smith, their fifth-wicket partnership eventually extending to 143, before the teenager shared stands of 57 and 79 with Oli Carter and Fynn Hudson-Prentice respectively, taking Sussex to a fourth batting point and a position of dominance.Coles was seventh man out, lbw to a tired stroke having faced 223 balls, after an innings characterised by fluent cover drives and percussive whips to leg. The only moment of drama during an otherwise chanceless knock came when he had made 72 and an attempted flick off the pads saw the ball ricochet behind him and deflect off leg stump, but without enough force to dislodge the bails.By the time Coles walked off to a standing ovation, Glamorgan were beginning to flag themselves, and promptly put down a succession of chances as the kids in the stands hooted and cheered. Labuschagne, who sent down four overs of liquorice allsorts spin for 39 runs, dropped the easiest of the lot when Jack Carson edged straight to the Australian at second slip without scoring, although Billy Root didn’t do much better with a Hudson-Prentice uppercut at deep third that ended up going for six. Hudson-Prentice was in a mood to drive home the advantage, bounding along to his highest Sussex score before picking out mid-off for 73 off 64.It had meant to be a Steven Smith day at Hove. As part of their Ashes build-up, Sky Sports got James Anderson and Stuart Broad to consult an Artificial Intelligence programme on ways to dismiss Smith – which yielded such piercing insights as “bowl a tight line and length” and “use strategic field placement”. But if machine learning has picked up anything useful from Smith’s three-week stint in the Championship, it will have been to try to hit his pads and appeal accordingly, such has been the alacrity with which umpires on the circuit have raised a finger. On this occasion, Martin Saggers was the official to send Smith on his way. The Australian had already received a life, a low edge to first slip off compatriot Michael Neser put down by Timm van der Gugten (who plays for Netherlands but, like Smith, was born in New South Wales) having added just a single to his overnight 68. But after hooking James Harris for six earlier in the over, he was struck on the back pad looking to defend; Smith looked like he had got outside the line of off stump, but Saggers thought otherwise. Asked by a fan for his view on the dismissal while doing the rounds at lunch, Smith replied with a smile: “Pretty much out if there was five stumps.”Coles took centre stage in Smith’s absence, and his efforts added to the sense that Sussex may have finally hit upon the right blend of youth and experience to mount a promotion bid. They are well placed for a win here that would push them to the top of Division Two but know it will require some hard yakka, having finished on top on both of their previous fixtures – rain-affected away trips to Worcestershire and Leicestershire – but unable to secure victory.Robinson took the one wicket to fall, Ed Byrom pulling firmly but straight to the leaping Carson midwicket. Sussex thought they had dismissed Byrom when he had made 37, only for the square-on umpire, Rob White, to request a conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara, Sussex’s captain, on whether the catch had been cleanly taken by wicketkeeper Carter, diving to his left; the upshot of which was Byrom resuming his innings.

Wolves now eyeing move for £120k-p/w player wanted by Bruno Lage at Benfica

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now eyeing a move to sign an “excellent” soon to be free agent ahead of their former manager Bruno Lage, who is now in charge of Benfica.

Wolves prepare for summer as Semedo exit links heat up

As Wolves prepare for their Premier League game against Everton on Saturday, manager Vitor Pereira has received some good news, as according to Molineux News, Rodrigo Gomes has now returned to training and could be in contention for the game against the Toffees.

"Dynamic" Wolves ace takes key step towards injury return ahead of Everton

He could ease their Cunha blow…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 5, 2025

The Portuguese winger has missed the last four games in all competitions, including the defeat to AFC Bournemouth last time out, but his return comes at a crucial time for Wolves, as talisman Matheus Cunha begins his suspension.

Away from injury news, it has also emerged this week that Portuguese giants Benfica are set to advance talks over signing defender Nelson Semedo on a free transfer. The Portuguese will become a free agent at the end of the season, and given he has yet to sign a new deal, Lage has his eye on reuniting with the full-back in Portugal.

Should Semedo leave, it will put an end to five years at Molineux, after joining in 2020 from Barcelona.

Wolves eye move to sign £120k-p/w player ahead of Benfica

While Lage has his eyes set on signing a player from the Premier League side, according to Caught Offside, Wolves are looking to beat Lage and Benfica to the signing of defender Victor Lindelof, who is expected to become a free agent.

The Manchester United player is coming to the end of his contract at Old Trafford, and with no talks being held over a new deal, it is looking likely he will leave at the end of this season. That has alerted several clubs from England and abroad, with Wolves one side interested in a deal. But they do face competition from Benfica, who Lindelof played for before joining the Red Devils, as they want him to replace Nicolas Otamendi in defence.

Lindelof, who has been described as “excellent” in the past by Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst, has been at Old Trafford for eight seasons, during which he has won the League Cup and FA Cup. The Sweden international featured heavily in his first couple of seasons under José Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjær, but in the last two or three seasons he has become more of a rotational player.

Despite the 30-year-old having a lack of minutes on the pitch this season, he could be a decent free signing for Wolves. Lindelof would bring viable Premier League and European experience as well as being a defender who is comfortable coming out from the back with the ball. The defender is on £120,000 a week at United, so he would be an expensive pick up, but given he is a free agent, they could afford to bite the bullet somewhat on wages.

Chelsea ready to sell 2 stars on combined £345k-p/w to fund striker signing

Chelsea are in a position to kick on under Enzo Maresca and it appears plans are in motion for another busy summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's summer transfer plans start to take shape

The Blues are off and running in the market after agreeing deals to sign Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting Clube de Portugal for a combined fee of just above £62 million, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

While two exciting new arrivals are welcomed at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are also reportedly working on a surprise deal to bring Ola Aina back to the club from Nottingham Forest. However, they will need to wait and see whether the Nigeria international commits to a new long-term deal at the City Ground.

No strangers to moving swiftly on the transfer front, the Champions League qualification contenders will hope to rubber-stamp their involvement in the competition for next season to give themselves a better chance of landing key targets. Simultaneously, they may have to be wise to avoid any PSR-related drama once the window opens.

Arrivals are the exciting part of squad building, but little attention is paid to how clubs claim the financial expenditure necessary to pull off such deals.

In Chelsea’s case, they could now aim to sell off two of their higher earners to make way for one of their priority swoops this summer, per reports.

Chelsea line up Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix sales

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are willing to sell Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix in the summer to aid their pursuit of a new attacking addition to compete with Nicolas Jackson for a starting spot.

£130,000 per week earner Felix is a target for Aston Villa and there is scope for a permanent deal. The Blues would also be willing to send him out on loan if no direct buyers come forward.

Uh oh: Rival club make contact over signing "unbelievable" £40m Chelsea ace

One of the Blues’ Premier League rivals have made an approach to sign a player Enzo Maresca is desperate to keep hold of.

ByDominic Lund Mar 20, 2025

On the other hand, AC Milan aren’t keen on signing the Portugal international long-term due to a combination of their tight financial constraints and his struggle to make a major impact at San Siro out on loan.

Sterling is also on the chopping block, and clearing his current £215,000 weekly pay packet at Stamford Bridge could free up further expenditure to sanction incomings following a return of just one goal in 23 outings at Arsenal.

Combined, the pair command a wage of £345,000 every seven days, which isn’t ideal when neither player is currently in the first-team squad. Chelsea have a habit of incurring a large player turnover from season to season, so it will come as no surprise to supporters that the duo may now be set for the exit door.

Middlesex needed to take quick wickets to give themselves a chance of winning and their hopes were raised when skipper Toby Roland-Jones removed Hassan Azad with just the second ball of the day. But despite conditions favouring the bowlers, only one further wicket fell before the hosts reached their target.Conditions were testing early on and Middlesex’s bowlers worked hard, finding plenty of movement on a slow surface to restrict scoring and keep the pressure on the batting side who were repeatedly drawn into playing and missing outside off-stump.Azad’s early departure, leaving a ball which nipped back and trapped him in front, brought together Northamptonshire’s Australian duo Whiteman and Chris Tremain. Ipswich must regret selling "incredible" ace who’s now worth 1100% more

For the majority of Ipswich Town supporters, getting into the Premier League full stop will be seen as an unbelievable achievement, even if the bleakness of relegation envelopes Portman Road very soon.

When Kieran McKenna took over, the Tractor Boys were marooned in League One, two divisions below the promised land.

Now, after two back-to-back promotions, Ipswich have the possibility of Premier League safety on the horizon, with the Suffolk club’s shrewdness in the transfer market another plus point to praise from their whirlwind rise.

Ipswich's best transfers under Kieran McKenna's reign

Before a ball was kicked to start McKenna’s first full campaign at the helm, the summer window saw Leif Davis enter the building, joining from Leeds for just £1m.

That has gone down to be a jaw-droppingly good steal, with Davis now worth in the region of £21m – as per Transfermarkt – off the back of picking up a bumper 38 assists from 115 Tractor Boys appearances.

Alongside Davis in the current relegation-threatened camp, the £20m pick-up of Liam Delap also looks to have been a very successful buy, even if it did require the newly promoted side to flex their muscles more than their modest League One dealings.

Indeed, Delap is now being touted to leave Portman Road for double his £20m fee amidst interest from Chelsea, with the ex-Manchester City ace up to ten strikes this term in the league, despite his lowly side regularly struggling to keep their heads above water.

But, it’s not always so rosy at Ipswich when it comes to incomings and outgoings working out, with the Suffolk outfit made to rue letting a homegrown talent go for a mere £1.5m back in 2021.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Former Ipswich star is star now worth 1100% more

Ipswich will surely be planning ahead for this coming summer already as they assess who can make the team stronger. This, of course, will be dependent on whether they’re still battling it out in the top-flight or they’re set for a promotion journey once more.

For either of these scenarios, having ex-academy graduate Flynn Downes back at their disposal would have surely helped, with McKenna’s men looking light in this position past this season ending owing to both Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste being temporary loanees.

This is where Downes could help in the here and now, with the 26-year-old never really sparking into life at Portman Road during the fledging stages of his career, before going on to prove himself away from his boyhood employers.

For both Southampton and Swansea City, Downes would solidify himself as a solid and assured option in the frantic second tier, with the Welsh side selling him for way more than the £1.5m they paid for the ex-Ipswich man at £12m to West Ham United.

Whilst this switch up to the top-flight didn’t go so smoothly, the Hammers still managed to offload Downes for around the £18m ballpark to Southampton, which represents a 1100% increase from his days as a £1.5m player in Wales, with the 5 foot 8 midfielder even steering the South Coast side to promotion glory come the end of the 2023/24 season.

His efforts that campaign – which saw him average a calm and cool 93% pass accuracy per league contest – backed up then Saints boss Russell Martin’s claims that the 26-year-old is “incredible”, with Ipswich left to wonder what could have been if they hadn’t signed off on that Swans deal.

With the Suffolk side even reportedly looking at a late deal to bring Downes back to Portman Road deep into the winter window owing to a fall-out at St. Mary’s, there must be a lingering pain still that they did allow him to exit before he fully blossomed.

Rovman Powell, who led Jamaica Tallawahs to the CPL title last season, has been traded to Barbados Royals, ahead of CPL 2023. Powell, who is West Indies’ current T20I captain, could be a contender to lead Royals, who had finished runners-up last season. As part of the trade, legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr. has joined Tallawahs from Royals. Walsh Jr. had been named Player of the tournament in his first year with the Barbados franchise in 2019 and then had a stint as a net bowler with Royals’ franchise in the IPL – Rajasthan.Related

CPL 2023 to be played in five Caribbean countries

“It is with a heavy heart that my time with the Tallawahs has come to an end,” Powell posted on Instagram. “I have made life-long friends and memories I will never forget. Not least winning two CPL titles for my home franchise, one of those as CAPTAIN, which I will always cherish.”I’m looking forward to joining the Royals and beginning a new chapter of my CPL career. I would like to thank all the players and coaches who have been part of my Tallawahs journey these last few years. Most of all, I want to thank the Jamaican fans, for your support.”Powell’s exit from Tallawahs follows that of other local stars Chris Gayle and Andre Russell. Gayle’s association with Tallawahs ended in April 2020 after an acrimonious fallout with Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was the assistant coach of the franchise at the time.Gayle had said he had always wanted to end his career in the “uniform” of Jamaica, his home team, but that dream now appears to be over, and Gayle laid the blame primarily on Sarwan, who he called various things, including “snake”, “vindictive”, “despicable”.

Russell then moved from Tallawahs to Trinbago Knight Riders ahead of CPL 2022, two seasons after he had called the franchise the “weirdest” he has ever played for.The 2023 season of the CPL will be played across five countries in the Caribbean from August 16 to September 24. But Jamaica will not host any games this season too.For the third consecutive year, the CPL will overlap with the Hundred, the 100-balls-a-side competition in England that runs from August 1 to August 27 this year. At this stage, Sunil Narine is the only West Indian men’s player who will be involved in both competitions; he is expected to play around five games for Oval Invincibles before leaving for the CPL.
