Leroy Sane’s isn’t done with Bayern Munich yet! Max Eberl explains ‘strange situation’ as Galatasaray-bound winger will join Bundesliga champions' Club World Cup campaign – but only for the group stage

Sane to still play for Bayern at Club World CupGerman winger signs for GalatasarayKompany pushed to keep him for tournamentFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Sane has officially agreed to join Galatasaray on a free transfer after his contract with Bayern expires on June 30. However, according to Sky Germany, there is a mutual agreement between the clubs that will see Sane feature for the Bavarians in the Club World Cup.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 29-year-old winger will join the squad for group matches and possibly the round of 16, but won’t stay beyond that, with his contract expiring at the end of June. Despite rejecting multiple contract extensions and falling down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany, Sane remains a valued figure for the Bundesliga winners, and his presence is expected to boost the attack in the Club World Cup.

WHAT EBERL SAID

Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl said: "If the player then has another offer and accepts it, that's completely normal. That's legitimate, and the joint decision that he will still be with us for the group matches and the possible round of 16 at the Club World Cup also shows that there is no resentment. He had a choice. We negotiated. Then there was the change of advisor. We simply didn't adjust our numbers much after that. We tried to build bridges in talks – without him or Bayern Munich losing face. He totally understood what we did."

On Sane's presence at the Club World Cup, he added: "It's a strange situation for all of us. He's up for it, and we said: 'If you're up for it, then you should come.' We want a player who's up for playing the tournament, because we're hopefully here for four weeks now. Then you need guys who have fire, energy, and enthusiasm. He said he'd like to be part of this group. And then it was clear to us that we would say: Leroy is in. We decided this together."

Alex Lees posts third century in a row as Durham pile on the runs

Gloucestershire trail by 117 overnight after ex-England opener posts 195, his Durham best

ECB Reporters Network11-Jul-2023Durham 433 for 8 (Lees 195, Clark 82) lead Gloucestershire 316 by 117 runsAlex Lees gave the England selectors a gentle nudge after scoring his third century in as many innings to guide Durham into a strong position against Gloucestershire in their LV= Insurance County Championship clash.Lees anchored the innings with a flawless knock of 195, posting his highest score as a Durham player since his move to Seat Unique Riverside in 2018. Graham Clark provided the perfect complement with 82 as the two shared a stand worth 195 after the hosts were reduced to 109 for four in reply to Gloucestershire’s 316.The two batters rebuilt the innings and propelled Durham ahead in the game, having skittled the visitors’ tail within the first half-hour of day two. It allowed Brydon Carse to tee off late in the day to push the hosts into a 117-run lead at the close with two first-innings wickets remaining.Resuming on 280 for six, Gloucestershire put their foot down before the arrival of the new ball. Zafar Gohar smashed three boundaries off Carse’s first over, while Josh Shaw cleared the rope with a huge strike over long-on against Parkinson to earn a second batting bonus point.Durham answered fire with fire as Carse responded with a hostile spell to make the breakthrough. Shaw could only glove behind to Robinson down the leg-side and the next ball was too good for Matt Taylor. Zaman Akhter survived the hat-trick ball and another barrage from Carse before the arrival of the new ball.Ben Raine then wrapped up the innings within three deliveries with the new Kookaburra in hand by bowling Gohar and pinning Dominic Goodman lbw, securing maximum bowling points for the hosts.Shaw made quick inroads for the visitors to remove Michael Jones, but Lees responded by taking the attack to the Gloucestershire bowlers. The left-hander shared a stand worth 67 with Scott Borthwick before the Durham captain picked out substitute fielder Jack Taylor as he aimed to clear the short boundary, presenting Shaw with his second wicket.Lees worked his way to his fifty from only 56 balls, but Durham had issues at the other end when David Bedingham emulated his captain’s dismissal falling three balls before the lunch break. Ollie Robinson continued the procession after the interval as fell caught and bowled to Goodman, leaving Durham in trouble at 109 for four after losing three wickets for 32.The home side required patience at the crease and Lees duly delivered without taking any risks on his march to three figures. He showed composure in a slow grind through the nineties before bringing up his third hundred of the term after striking Gohar straight down the ground to the fence.Clark offered a useful foil at the other end to support the former England opener. After a period of consolidation, the two batters upped the ante and cranked up the pressure on the Gloucestershire bowlers.James Bracey turned to a variety of options, but could not stop the onslaught from the fifth-wicket stand, especially from Lees who powered his way to his highest score of the season by passing 150 with three-straight pulls to the boundary against Akhter.Ben Charlesworth took the ball in the 70th over and finally broke the stand for 195 when Clark drilled the ball straight to Chris Dent at short mid-wicket, falling narrowly short of a deserved century. Carse and Lees guided the hosts to their third batting bonus point before the new ball.Matt Taylor found his rhythm from the off with the new ball to end Lees’ brilliant knock for 195 and then Raine first ball to give the visitors hope of skittling the hosts late in the day. But, Carse stamped his authority in the final hour, reaching fifty from 45 balls and smashing three sixes in the process, ensuring Durham ended the evening in command closing in on maximum batting points.

A matter of weeks after Frimpong swapped Leverkusen for Liverpool, Wirtz has sealed a £116 million ($156m) switch to Anfield. Now, the Dutchman has expressed his delight at the fact they will be team-mates once more, while explaining how Wirtz made him feel welcome when he joined the German team in 2021 from Celtic.

Frimpong told Sky, via journalist Florian Plettenberg: "Now that it’s official, it’s the best feeling. When I first came to Leverkusen, Flo was the one that took me in. Now we’re doing it all over again – so it’s good. I’ve been in Leverkusen for four and a half years, and I won everything. I won the Pokal. I won the Super Cup. I won the Bundesliga. So I wanted a new challenge. With Celtic, I won the treble. With Leverkusen, the double. So in Liverpool, I also want to win trophies."

Frimpong, 24, and Wirtz, 22, formed a strong partnership at Leverkusen over the past few years, as they won a host of titles during a successful link-up. Now they will hope to build on that when they begin playing for defending Premier League champions Liverpool next season.

Babar banking on 'some kind of home advantage' in Pallekele against India

Pakistan captain not too fussed about travel load and insists his side wouldn’t let the occasion get the better of them

Danyal Rasool01-Sep-20232:23

Babar Azam pleased with Pakistan’s middle order stepping up

Pakistan will be going into their final Group A match of the Asia Cup, against India on Saturday in Pallekele, with the same side that beat Nepal in Multan on Wednesday. It is the second time Pakistan have opted to name their line-up a day early, a practice that is set to continue throughout the tournament. However, with rain around and significant chances of a curtailed game, the Asia Cup’s official hosts retain the option of making changes up until the toss.It is India’s first game in the tournament, while victory for Pakistan will guarantee them a spot in the Super Fours as group winners. While the match against India is being held in Pallekele, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said the fact that enough of his players had spent time in Sri Lanka of late meant they had “some kind of home advantage”.Related

Shastri: India favourites, but Pakistan have narrowed the gap

When Ifti-mania swept Multan

“We’ve been here for the last two months,” he said at the press conference on Friday. “We played the Tests [against Sri Lanka] here, then the LPL and then the Afghanistan series. We have decent knowledge of the conditions, and the wicket looks like a sporting one. I’ve found Sri Lankan conditions pretty similar to Pakistani and Indian conditions. You take time when you come in to bat, and bowl in the right channels.”With games between Pakistan and India as emotionally fraught as they come, former India head coach Ravi Shastri told ESPNcricinfo that it would be temperament – and not numbers – that would determine the winner. Of late, a number of contests between the sides have ended up as comprehensive wins for either team, with the other failing to play anywhere near their best.Babar Azam: “When the Asia Cup was announced, we knew we’d have to travel a lot. The physios and trainers looked after us.”•AFP/Getty Images

India’s final-ball victory at last year’s T20 World Cup was something of an outlier; before that, they enjoyed big wins at the 2019 World Cup and twice at the 2018 Asia Cup, although Pakistan were similarly dominant at the 2021 T20 World Cup and the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. However, come 2023, Babar insisted his side wouldn’t let the occasion get the better of them.”I don’t think we feel the pressure of this game,” he said. “We’re focusing on what we can control. We want to continue our momentum. The boys are excited. You know India-Pakistan is a high-intensity match, and the fans wait for it for a while. We’re similarly excited. We’re going to stick with the same top order; but if we don’t get a good start, I am encouraged by the middle order stepping up. They’re chipping in. We had been lagging in the middle order for a while, but they’re responding well now.”There is something of an elephant in the room, though, with Pakistan having to travel more than any other side at a tournament they are ostensibly hosting. They began by flying from Colombo to Multan for the game against Nepal, and left from the stadium directly for the airport to return to Sri Lanka. After the game against India, they will, in all likelihood, be flying back to Pakistan for a Super Four match on September 6, only to return to Sri Lanka once more for all their remaining games. India’s refusal to play in Pakistan made that a necessity, and as it has turned out, they happen to enjoy a much lighter travel load, staying in Sri Lanka throughout the tournament.”When the Asia Cup was announced, we knew we’d have to travel a lot. The physios and trainers looked after us,” Babar said. “We had been preparing since the schedule was announced. Travel is a part of cricket [for which] you have to be prepared; I don’t expect it to affect our performance.”Babar was even optimistic enough to be dismissive of rain playing spoilsport.”The amount I’ve played here I haven’t seen the weather affect cricket. The radar might say there’s rain around but it doesn’t really happen.”

Sources close to the negotiation told ESPN that the deal is a permanent transfer, with América expected to pay around $6.7 million for Gutiérrez, a left-sided midfielder who came up through Cruz Azul’s academy. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gutiérrez made his professional debut in the 2019 Clausura and has since played 103 matches for Cruz Azul, scoring six goals and registering eight assists. Known for his versatility and playmaking from the left wing, he’s expected to compete directly with Brian Rodríguez for a starting spot – though Rodríguez may be on his way out, with interest from MLS and Spanish clubs.

América's front office plans to make at least four signings this transfer window, with Gutiérrez being the first. In addition to a left winger, the club is targeting a striker, an attacking midfielder, and potentially a right-back.

Meanwhile, Dutch winger Javairo Dilrosun -on loan at LAFC for the Club World Cup – has seen limited action, featuring just 45 minutes. LAFC hold a $5 million purchase option, but if they decline to exercise it, América are expected to move him elsewhere, as he is not in their long-term plans.
