South Africa rise to the top by the barest of margins in thriller against Pakistan

As Keshav Maharaj exploded into celebration, having swung Mohammad Nawaz to the fine-leg boundary for the winning runs with the No. 11 for company, waves of relief and elation washed over his team-mates watching from the dressing room. South Africa had thrown off the yoke of the choke by the barest of margins against Pakistan in Chennai to chase successfully for the first time in their World Cup 2023 campaign. The one-wicket win took them level with India on ten points at the top of the table, but ahead on net run rate, though they have played an extra game. The victory was set up by their bowlers – Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen in particular – who dismissed Pakistan for 270 in 46.4 overs despite them having been well placed at 225 for 5 in the 40th. And when Aiden Markram – who overtook Virat Kohli to become the second-highest run scorer of this World Cup during his innings of 91 – and David Miller were putting together their 70-run stand for the fifth wicket, a South African win looked comfortable. All that changed when Miller edged Shaheen Shah Afridi behind in the 34th over, with the target still 65 runs away. The fine balance appeared to swing South Africa’s way once again as Jansen joined Markram and the pair began to hack at the equation rather than approach it with caution, being South Africa’s last pair of recognised batters. The ball after he clattered Haris Rauf back over his head for a flat six in the 37th over, Jansen spooned a slower ball to Babar Azam at point, leaving South Africa 36 away from the target with four wickets in hand.Fourteen runs later, the legspinner Usama Mir, who came into this game in the 15th over of South Africa’s chase as a concussion substitute for Shadab Khan, picked up his second wicket: Markram’s attempted heave resulting in a leading edge that landed in Babar’s hands once again. South Africa’s last recognised batter was gone with his team still 22 short.Afridi then found the outside edge of Gerald Coetzee and Rauf pulled off a one-handed diving return catch to dismiss Lungi Ngidi. By then, they had poked and prodded their way to within 11 runs of victory. On another day, umpire Alex Wharf might have upheld Rauf’s lbw appeal against the No. 11 Shamsi off the final ball of the 46th over. Not tonight. Pakistan reviewed the not-out decision, only to watch in agony as the ball-tracking showed impact to be umpire’s call. Nine balls later, it was all over – after 25 matches, the 2023 ODI World Cup had its first thriller. And South Africa did not choke.Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj celebrate South Africa’s nail-biting win•ICC/Getty Images

While South Africa’s batting performance may have been jittery, their bowling effort – their weaker discipline so far in the tournament – was impressive on a flat surface. After Pakistan opted to bat, it took incisive use of the short ball from Jansen and Coetzee and the smart selection of Shamsi, who turned the ball both ways, to dent their run-scoring.Ngidi returned from a knee niggle that had kept him out of the Bangladesh game to open the bowling alongside Jansen and the pair began with a short ball barrage. One of Jansen’s went over both Abdullah Shafique and Quinton de Kock’s heads for byes, while another from Ngidi, went to the point boundary but South Africa’s relentless approach did not take long to pay off. In Jansen’s third over, Shafique holed out off Ngidi at deep-square leg.In Jansen’s next over, South Africa inserted Heinrich Klaasen at a deep-slip/short-third and Jansen went full and wide. Imam-ul-Haq reached for it, edged and was caught to leave Pakistan 38 for 2 in the seventh over.Markram was introduced in the eighth over – presumably for the match-up with Babar who has not been at his best against spin – and Rizwan continued living dangerously. He chipped Markram wide of cover and batted on to bring up his 2000th ODI run and then hit boundaries of Jansen, Markram and Maharaj to get Pakistan going. With spin at both ends, Rizwan and Babar built steadily and their third-wicket stand grew to 49 before Bavuma called on Coetzee. Used in the enforcer role, Coetzee was up at 140kph and around the helmet from the get-go and it did not take too long for him to have an impact. His fifth ball was a bouncer which Rizwan top-edged to de Kock.Pakistan then promoted Iftikhar Ahmed to No. 5 for the first time in his career, ahead of Saud Shakeel who is reputed for playing spin well. He scored only five runs off the first 14 balls he faced, then hit Maharaj over cow corner for six, Ngidi over midwicket for four but then, just after the halfway stage, failed to read a Shamsi googly and hit it to Klaasen at mid-on.All the while, Babar was ticking along and he went on to bring up a third half-century of this World Cup campaign, off 64 balls. Pakistan needed him to bat on but a review from de Kock, who thought he had Babar caught down leg off a Shamsi legbreak, ended his vigil.Haris Rauf took a stunning catch to get rid of Lungi Ngidi•ICC/Getty Images

Shakeel and Shadab combined for an 84-run sixth-wicket stand as South Africa’s death bowling struggles appeared to come early. Runs came off the spinners and Coetzee, who eventually broke the stand with a signature bumper. Shadab tried to clear midwicket but gave Maharaj a simple catch. Fifteen balls later, Shakeel threw his bat at a Shamsi delivery close to off stump and nicked off. Pakistan had already used their finisher earlier in the innings and the impact of how far that backfired was clear when neither Afridi nor Mohammad Nawaz came off and Pakistan were bowled out with 20 balls to spare.Pakistan gave Iftikhar a promotion with the ball too, and he bowled the first delivery of the chase down leg side for five wides. Two balls later, Shadab hit his head on the turf while fielding and had to be walked off the field. The eventful start to South Africa’s innings continued when de Kock, the top scorer of the World Cup, took 18 off Afridi’s opening over. Afridi, however, eventually had de Kock caught on the deep-square-leg boundary.Bavuma had a quiet start to his comeback innings, after missing the last two games with a stomach bug, but took on Nawaz. He found boundaries via the sweep, the cover drive and the on drive, then hit Afridi over the inner ring and Haris over midwicket but played one big shot too many as the powerplay came to a close, pulling Wasim to midwicket.Rassie van der Dussen and Markram dealt with the pace from Rauf and Wasim with ease and Markram’s upper cut over deep third off Rauf was the shot of their 53-run stand for the third wicket. While they were batting it was confirmed that Shadab would not be able to take any further participation in the match and his replacement Usama was brought on in the 19th over. He made an almost immediate impact when he pinned van der Dussen on the pads with a topspinner. Van der Dussen reviewed and ball-tracking showed it was going on to clip leg stump. Seventeen deliveries later, Klaasen top-edged Wasim to Usama at deep third and South Africa were stuttering.Markram and Miller then came together to steady the chase with their attacking approach – adding 70 off 69 balls – and though South Africa stumbled again after they were separated, they did not fall short like they had done against Netherlands.

Mathews becomes the first to be dismissed timed out in international cricket

A broken helmet strap led to the SL batter being dismissed in unusual fashion

Andrew Fidel Fernando06-Nov-20233:41

Harmison: ‘I’m disappointed that Mathews was given out in that way’

Angelo Mathews became the first player ever to be timed out in international cricket after a helmet malfunction in Sri Lanka’s World Cup group match against Bangladesh in Delhi, adding further drama to a rivalry not short of it.Mathews was already on the pitch and in his final preparations before taking strike against Shakib Al Hasan. His helmet strap broke just as he was tightening it around his chin. He called for a replacement helmet, which was run out to him by Chamika Karunaratne. Shakib then appeared to initiate a discussion with umpire Marais Erasmus, after which Mathews, as he was not ready to face his first ball within the two minutes to do so as allowed in the ICC playing conditions, was informed he was timed out.During the innings break, reserve umpire Adrian Holdstock explained the process behind the dismissal to broadcaster : “The fielding captain initiated the appeal to Marais Erasmus, who was the standing umpire, that he wanted to appeal for timed out.”Mathews was yet to put on the new helmet and Karunaratne was still standing near the pitch when the news of his dismissal was relayed to Mathews. At this stage, at least three minutes and twenty seconds had elapsed since previous batter Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal.Mathews initially seemed to think the umpire was not serious, but quickly wore a worried expression, and engaged in a long discussion with both Erasmus and square-leg umpire Richard Illingworth.

Erasmus then approached Shakib and had a quick discussion (the second between the two), following which Mathews also spoke briefly to Shakib, who offered a consoling tap on Mathews’ shoulder. But ultimately, the decision to rule him timed out was upheld, prompting more animated and visibly upset gesturing from Mathews at his broken helmet strap. At the time of Mathews’ being given out formally, Bangladesh had long since broken their huddle, and had taken their places in the field, with Shakib at the top of his mark, ready to bowl.”As a batsman I think you need to make sure that you have all your equipment in place in order to make sure you get here, because you actually have to be ready to receive the ball within two minutes – not ready to prepare or take your guard,” Holdstock told Ian Bishop during the innings break, confirming that no discretion is to be made for equipment malfunction. “So technically, you should be there within maybe 15 seconds to make sure all those things are in place before you actually receive the ball.”ESPNcricinfo LtdHoldstock also said two minutes had already elapsed between the dismissal of Samarawickrama and the strap “becoming an issue” for Mathews. “And in the instance this afternoon, the batter wasn’t ready to receive the ball within in those two minutes, even before the strap became an issue for him. The two minutes had already elapsed before he had received the next delivery.”Video footage of the events showed that somewhere between a minute and 50 seconds and a minute and 55 seconds had passed since Samarawickrama had been dismissed. The ICC playing conditions stipulate clearly that the batter must be ready to receive the ball within two minutes, which Mathews was not: “40.1 Out Timed out 40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed Out.”Mathews was visibly annoyed by the mode of dismissal as he left the field. He kicked the helmet in frustration as he passed out of the playing area and chucked his bat away. His dismissal left Sri Lanka in significant trouble, at 135 for 5. Charith Asalanka then scored a hundred though, to help his side recover to 279.

Germany squad World Cup 2026: Which players will make it to the showpiece in USA, Mexico and Canada?

All you need to know about Germany's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Four-time world champions Germany will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of Europe's traditional powerhouses.

The German national team last won the World Cup in 2014, famously humiliating hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final before defeating Lionel Messi's Argentina in the final at the Maracana to bring the ultimate prize back to Berlin. However, since that triumph, Germany have experienced a significant slump in form at major international tournaments.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Die Mannschaft were shockingly eliminated in the group stages, a disappointment they repeated at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after being drawn into a group of death alongside Spain, Japan, and Costa Rica.

Nevertheless, Germany possess a squad filled with high-quality players, including some of the most exciting young talents in Europe. This makes them a dangerous opponent despite their recent shortcomings at the big stage.

It will be interesting to see how Julian Nagelsmann utilizes this group of players and how far Germany can go in the tournament next year.

GOAL takes a look at the players at their disposal.

Getty ImagesGoalkeepers

With the legendary Manuel Neuer now retired from Germany duty, Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is expected to be the first-choice goalkeeper for Die Mannschaft at the tournament in the USA, Mexico, and Canada next year.

However, Ter Stegen has faced injury issues of his own recently, which has thrown the race for the starting goalkeeper spot wide open. Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann has performed well in the Bundesliga, while Alexander Nubel of Stuttgart is also a reliable option, with Manchester City's Stefan Ortega not out of the running completely either.

Still, if Ter Stegen remains fit, he is expected to be the undisputed starter, having spent much of his international career playing second fiddle to Neuer.

In the German defence, some familiar names may be missing, but the options available to Julian Nagelsmann are still of high quality. Thilo Kehrer of Monaco has been impressive playing at center-back, while Jonathan Tah from Bayern Munich is another excellent option in the heart of the defense.

Antonio Rudiger continues to be a stalwart at the back for both club and country and will once again be a key player for Germany at the World Cup next year.

Waldemar Anton, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Stuttgart in 2024, is another strong contender for a center-back role alongside club teammate Niklas Sule.

In the wider areas, Germany are well equipped with players like David Raum, Robin Gosens, and Maximilian Mittelstadt. Despite a seemingly weaker backline on paper as compared to the ones in previous years, Nagelsmann is the ideal manager to get the best out of them.

Compared to the defence, Germany's midfield is significantly more formidable. Joshua Kimmich's presence in the middle of the park provides much-needed stability for the team, both in attack and defense.

Young Aleksandar Pavlovic is one of the emerging talents in the German squad and could play a key role for Die Mannschaft at the tournament next year. Similarly, Felix Nmecha is another promising player who could be included in the World Cup squad.

Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka is also expected to have an important role to play, while the attacking responsibilities in midfield will likely fall on the shoulders of the brilliant Florian Wirtz, who recently joined Premier League champions Liverpool.

In the attacking department, Germany are well stacked with some of the top talents in Europe. Jamal Musiala will undoubtedly be the player to watch at the showpiece event in the USA, Mexico, and Canada next year. Despite his young age, Musiala is already considered one of the best attacking players in Europe.

Alongside him, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry offer exciting options on the flanks for Nagelsmann, both possessing tremendous pace and flair.

In the striking role, Nagelsmann will have several quality options to choose from. Arsenal's Kai Havertz, although not a traditional striker, can play a vital role with his goal contributions. Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade has also impressed in the Bundesliga and could make a strong case for himself if he continues to perform consistently.

Deniz Undav and Niclas Fulkrug are also two very interesting options that Nagelsmann could possibly opt for.

Kane Williamson, Taijul Islam star on evenly-matched second day in Sylhet

Bangladesh spinner answered New Zealand batter’s 104 with figures of 4 for 89, with the hosts still 44 ahead

Taijul Islam kept Bangladesh ahead after the second day’s play in Sylhet, even as Kane Williamson levelled with Don Bradman and Virat Kohli on 29 Test centuries. The left-arm spinner took four wickets to inspire a strong reply from the hosts, who held a 44-run lead at stumps. New Zealand reached 266 for 8 when play was called off early due to bad light for the second day in a row.Williamson held the New Zealand innings together with a patient 104 which he essayed off 205 balls with 11 fours. He kept holding one end up with the middle order, but occasional wickets at the other end restricted his partnerships to only 54, 66 and 78 runs for the third, fourth and sixth wickets, respectively. Bangladesh even struck twice late in the day, when Taijul removed Williamson and Ish Sodhi with the second new ball. He had also given Bangladesh their first breakthrough early in the first session. But earlier, they had lost their remaining wicket off the day’s first ball when Tim Southee had Shoriful Islam lbw. In reply, New Zealand made a cautious start before their openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway succumbed to tight spin bowling. Latham, usually a heavy-scorer against Bangladesh, top edged a sweep off Taijul, which was easily caught by Nayeem Hasan. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then had Conway caught at silly point, where debutant Shahadat Hossain took a smart catch diving to his right.New Zealand regrouped through Williamson and Henry Nicholls by adding 54 for the third wicket. Nicholls remained cagey during his stay of 19 runs from 42 balls, before edging Shoriful. It was the first time in 13 years that Bangladesh took New Zealand’s first three wickets for less than a hundred runs.Taijul Islam (right) got Kane Williamson late in the day•AFP/Getty Images

In Shoriful’s following over, however, Bangladesh missed out on a caught-behind dismissal when Daryl Mitchell edged the ball but there wasn’t a convincing appeal from Bangladesh. The Snickometer confirmed the nick afterwards. It cost Bangladesh considerably given the match situation, as Mitchell and Williamson added 66 for the fourth wicket. But Taijul, returning for his second spell, got Mitchell, who made 41 with three fours and a six, stumped first ball to give Bangladesh a much-needed breakthrough at that stage.Williamson then got a couple of lives either side of the tea break. First, Taijul dropped a simple chance at midwicket when Williamson pulled Nayeem when on 63. When on 70, Williamson miscued a pull off Nayeem but Shoriful dropped another simple chance at deep-backward square leg. Nayeem was left bemused but the Tom Blundell wicket in between the two dropped catches probably soothed the pain.Against the run of play, part-timer Mominul Haque removed Glenn Phillips just when he was looking dangerous. He made 42 off 62 balls with five fours and a six, before edging the left-arm spinner to slip where Najmul Hossain Shanto took a good, low catch.Williamson reached his century five overs before the second new ball was due; but as soon as it was taken, Taijul removed him with his best ball of the day. Williamson came forward, but had the new ball slip between his bat and pad. Sodhi was Taijul’s fourth wicket of the day, caught neatly at short leg by Shahadat.

'Relegation written all over it' – Brentford told Jordan Henderson is a 'downgrade' on Christian Norgaard as fans react to 'finished' ex-Liverpool captain's return to the Premier League

Fans have slammed Brentford for signing Jordan Henderson while warning that the veteran English midfielder is a massive "downgrade" on Christian Norgaard. On Tuesday, the Bees confirmed the free transfer for the Premier League and Champions League-winning former Liverpool captain, who has returned to his homeland following stints at Al-Ettifaq and Ajax.

Following Norgaard's departure for Arsenal this summer, Brentford have found the Danish midfielder's replacement as they announced the arrival of Henderson on a two-year deal. The official statement from the club read: "Brentford can confirm the signing of Premier League and Champions League-winning captain Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract. Henderson, an England international with 84 caps for the Three Lions, joins the Bees on a free transfer after departing Ajax this summer."

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

The arrival of 35-year-old Henderson is not sitting well with a large section of fans who feel that the England international is a massive "downgrade" from former club captain Norgaard.

A fan with the X handle @kevo81393734 wrote: "LOVE HENDO! But this has relegation written all over it."

A Chelsea fan handle named CFCApex added: "I feel bad for you lot. How do you downgrade from Norgaard to Henderson RIP Brentfords European hopes."

A Manchester United fan handle named @UTD_Chill posted: "Finished player joining a Finished club."

Rob Edwards also took a dig at new Bees boss Keith Andrews as he wrote: "Andrews then this. It's like you want to get relegated."

Dean Evans also targeted Andrews as he added: "What an uninspiring signing if I ever seen one. First the manager now this."

  • WHAT THE MANAGER IS SAYING

Speaking on Henderson's arrival at the club, Brentford manager Andrews said: "When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision. We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that.

"We’ve got a pretty young squad, overall, and we’ve got a lot of club experience, which is really important, with the likes of Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen, Ethan Pinnock and Josh Dasilva, who is still at the club doing rehab. But what Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in the modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and the Champions League at a fantastic football club. He also has experience at an international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession – that’s the exact way we want to be as a football club. He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad."
