Harry Kane told he's got 'no reason to bow out' after England's 2026 World Cup campaign

Harry Kane has “no reason to bow out” of the England fold after gracing the 2026 World Cup, says Three Lions legend Stuart Pearce.

  • The Three Lions' all-time leading scorer
  • Closing in on appearance record
  • Expected to play on for some time yet

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Prolific striker Kane is currently captain of his country and continues to rewrite the history books. He is the all-time leading goalscorer for England’s men’s national team, with the target being found on 73 occasions through 107 appearances.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The expectation is that Kane will go on to break Peter Shilton’s cap record, which currently stands at 125. He should get close to that by the time that another major tournament rolls around next summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Kane, who has suffered defeat in back-to-back European Championship finals, has broken his trophy curse at club level – as a Bundesliga title winner with Bayern Munich – and is determined to end the Three Lions’ long wait for tangible success.

    WHAT PEARCE SAID

Pearce – speaking in association with Freebets.com, home of best casino sites – believes a talismanic performer will continue for some time yet, telling GOAL when asked how much international football the 32-year-old frontman has left in him: “He’s got another World Cup in him next summer, then you are looking two years beyond that. He’ll be a 35-year-old.

“He is incredibly professional. His game is not based on blistering speed. I see no reason at all to bow out. I saw Teddy Sheringham wheeling it out late on in his career. Teddy played with his head and I think Harry Kane does as well. I see no problem going forward. The big question mark will be, who’s coming along to dislodge him? At the moment, I’m not seeing anyone that is consistent enough.”

Aitana Bonmati always finds a way! Spain superstar scores sublime late winner to down Germany & book Euro 2025 final place as Ann-Katrin Berger goes from hero to zero

Aitana Bonmati's extra-time goal gave Spain a timely first-ever win over Germany in the Euro 2025 semi-finals, to set up a showdown against England.

Within the first 10 minutes, Germany spurned a gilt-edged chance; a long ball forward from goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger found Klara Buhl but, after bursting into the box, she could only flash a shot wide.

Berger was heroic for Germany in the quarter-final, making a world-class save to keep her side in the competition, and she was called upon repeatedly throughout the first half, making two excellent stops on the stroke of the interval, one from Esther Gonzalez, and one from Claudia Pina, keeping her sheet clean.

In the second period, the game descended into something of a midfield battle, but Die Nationalel had the best chance after the hour mark, as Buhl was once again set free of the Spanish backline, but her effort was well saved by Catalina Coll.

Buhl completed a hat-trick of near-misses with six minutes to go, as her free-kick from the edge of the box whistled just past Coll's post as she scrambled to get across. In injury-time, the Spanish 'keeper made a truly superb double save to keep Spain in the game, first clearing a looping effort off her line from underneath the crossbar, before denying Carlotta Wamser from close-range.

Like England's clash with Italy on Tuesday, the game went to extra time as the two exhausted teams struggled for fluency, but Spain found the breakthrough in the 112th minute, as Bonmati, the Ballon d'Or winner, beat Berger at her near post with a clever, powerful finish from an acute angle. The goalkeeper, for all of her heroics, had to do better.

Spain will now face England in Sunday's final.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE MVP

While England were not involved in this semi-final, it's hard to look beyond them as the big winner of the tie. They will hardly be running scared of Spain after a tight, tense affair that was both low on quality and attacking incident, and which went the distance of 120 minutes. It evens the playing field this weekend, what with Sarina Wiegman's side also playing into extra time against Italy. Revenge will be on the Lionesses' mind after the World Cup final two years ago.

THE BIG LOSER

Germany are out and one has to say that Buhl has to take her fair share of blame for it. She had two huge gilt-edged chances, and could not turn them into anything of substance. When you miss one chance in a semi-final, it's going to live with you for some time; missing two is going to take some getting over.

The final on Sunday. England await Spain as they aim to retain the trophy they won in 2022. Spain have got there by beating Germany for the first time ever, and will now compete in their first-ever European Championship showpiece.

Mustafizur stars as Gaikwad's CSK start title defence with comfortable win over RCB

Chennai Super Kings, under a brand-new captain, enjoyed a winning start to their defence of the IPL title in front of a raucous Chepauk crowd on Friday night. Mustafizur Rahman, who was among four debutants for CSK, took out four of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s top five in the space of ten balls to set up an eighth successive defeat for RCB in Chennai.Rachin Ravindra, who was playing his first IPL game, also played his part in the victory, with 37 off 15 balls at a strike rate of 246.66 on a pitch that slowed down later in the night. In his first game as CSK captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad started with a first-ball four, but RCB’s Impact Player Yash Dayal cut his innings short on 15 in CSK’s chase of 174.Cameron Green and Alzarri Joseph then briefly silenced the Chepauk crowd with their contrasting styles. While Green bowled slower cutters into the pitch, Joseph operated at high speeds and generated steep bounce, taking the pitch out of the equation.2:42

Do RCB have an overseas combination problem?

Shivam Dube, who was working his way back from injury, replaced Mustafizur as an Impact Player for CSK and laboured to 7 off 13 balls. But he then turned up the tempo to usher CSK home with an unbeaten 34 off 28 balls along with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored an unbeaten 25 off 17. MS Dhoni didn’t get to bat in the chase, but perhaps this is what he had hoped for when he handed over the keys of the CSK kingdom to Gaikwad.

RCB’s Jekyll-and-Hyde powerplay

After opting to bat in what was his first IPL game as an opposition player in Chennai, Faf du Plessis dashed out of the blocks, hitting seven fours in the first three overs. He latched on to any width that Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande offered, repeatedly pumping them over the off-side infield. Gaikwad got into the act and pushed extra cover back to deep cover and, on cue, Mustafizur had du Plessis holing out to Rachin Ravindra there for 35 off 21 balls. Three balls later, Mustafizur found a bit of extra bounce to have Rajat Patidar nicking off for a duck. Then, in the final over of the powerplay, Chahar had Glenn Maxwell guiding one straight into Dhoni’s gloves, also for a duck. After being on 37 for no loss in the first four overs, RCB lost three wickets for five runs in the next two.1:26

Moody: ‘RCB were predictable with short-ball plan’

Mustafizur goes bang-bang once again

Mustafizur then returned in the 12th over and dismissed Virat Kohli and Green in the space of three balls. While Kohli dragged a pull off a seam-up delivery to deep midwicket for 21 off 20 balls, Green was bowled by a whippy cutter for 18 off 22 balls. It was Mustafizur’s second double-wicket over.Mustafizur might not even have played had CSK’s death-overs specialist Matheesha Pathirana been fit. He ended up with figures of 4-0-29-4 on a night where the other two seamers in his team – Chahar and Deshpande – went at well over nine an over. When Pathirana returns to action, CSK will have a happy selection headache.

Rawat and Karthik prop up RCB

That RCB finished with 173 for 6 was down to a counterattacking 95-run partnership for the sixth wicket off just 50 balls that ended off the last ball of the innings courtesy a Dhoni direct hit.At one stage, RCB went 28 balls without a boundary, but Rawat then hit two in six balls to set RCB up for the end overs. He then walloped Deshpande for 6,6, 4 in a 25-run 18th over. At the other end, Karthik looked rusty to start with, but mixed power with inventiveness to give RCB’s innings more impetus.

Dube gets the job done for CSK

After CSK lost Gaikwad in the powerplay, Ravindra lined up RCB’s quicks with pulls and pick-up shots. He even whacked Karn Sharma over midwicket for six, but when he went for another six, he holed out to deep square-leg.Ajinkya Rahane (27 off 19 balls) and Daryl Mitchell (22 off 18) made cameos to take the chase deep in typical CSK style. But when Green snagged Mitchell, CSK still needed 64 off 45 balls. The two-bouncer rule empowered Joseph to run in hard and hit the deck even harder. Dube, however, just about passed the short-ball test and sealed the chase with six wickets and eight balls to spare.

Devine century delivers NZ consolation win

Jess Kerr and Hannah Rowe took three wickets apiece as England folded for 194

Twelve runs needed for victory, 12 runs needed to reach a century, all the time in the world, but why wait? In the space of three balls, Sophie Devine twice hauled Charlie Dean over the fence at deep midwicket to seal a breath-taking ton and an emphatic consolation win for New Zealand in Hamilton in their final match of the ODI series, which England won 2-1.Devine came to the crease with her side 14 for 2 and smashed a 93-ball century to reel in a target of 195 with 11 overs to spare. She was well supported by Maddy Green, with whom she shared an unbroken partnership worth 105, and Amelia Kerr, who scored 29 of her 31 runs in a 76-run stand with her captain. There was no sign of the quad strain that had kept Devine out of action since the fourth T20I in her impeccable footwork as she took to England’s attack – particularly offspinner Dean and quick Lauren Filer – in a typically powerful innings which underlined her importance to the White Ferns, just as they looked in danger of squandering a golden opportunity to beat England. The visitors were bowled out inside 50 overs for the second match in a row, seamers Jess Kerr and Hannah Rowe taking three wickets each to restrict them to 194 with 3.3 overs to spare. Yet again England had to lean on Player of the Series Amy Jones, whose scores of 92 not out, 48 and 50 lifted her side after middle-order collapses throughout. On this occasion, she reached a run-a-ball half-century and shared a 73-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Dean, the pair having put on a record 130-run stand in the previous match. But this time it wasn’t enough to combat what was to come from Devine.Kate Cross struck in the third over of the run-chase as Georgia Plimmer – opening for Bernadine Bezuidenhout, who injured her hamstring while fielding in the second ODI – chased one outside off stump and edged to wicketkeeper Jones. Then Suzie Bates sent a leading edge straight to Maia Bouchier at midwicket attempting to turn Nat Sciver-Brunt squarer to the leg side.At the end of the powerplay, the hosts were 31 for 2 as Devine and Amelia Kerr settled into the early stages of their partnership. Devine was on 13 when she sent a sharp, difficult chance off Filer through the hands of Heather Knight at slip. Devine clubbed Dean over deep midwicket for twin sixes in three balls and brought up her fifty over the course of four fours in five balls off Dean’s next over.In between, Sophie Ecclestone pulled up with what appeared to be a calf problem at the start of her seventh over, but she broke the stand when she trapped Amelia Kerr lbw before leaving the field to seek treatment. Ecclestone returned to action and saw Jones fumble a stumping chance off Green with New Zealand needing 43 runs off 88 balls.Filer, who replaced fellow seamer Lauren Bell in the XI to play the fourth ODI of her fledgling international career, conceded 17 runs off her sixth over, 12 of those in fours clubbed down the ground by Devine. With 12 needed, Devine cleared the deep midwicket fence by some distance off Dean to move within one identical strike of a century and she repeated the effort two balls later.Earlier, Rowe struck in her second over, the fourth of the match, when she struck Tammy Beaumont on the back thigh with a ball that was on track to ping the top of leg stump and Jess Kerr had Maia Bouchier caught by Georgia Plimmer at extra cover with a leg-cutter for 19.Sophia Dunkley is bowled by Jess Kerr•Getty Images

After 10 overs, England were 50 for 2 but they lost 4 for 13 in 34 balls after Sciver-Brunt and Knight put on 58 runs together for the third wicket. Amelia Kerr got a hand to a difficult chance but couldn’t cling onto a ball driven straight back at her by Sciver-Brunt, on 15 at the time. She did, however, ultimately remove Sciver-Brunt for 27, caught by Fran Jonas.Sophia Dunkley, who lost her place in the line-up after the five T20Is where she only reached double figures once, with a score of 32, in four innings, returned to the side after Alice Capsey sprained her ankle during training on Saturday. But Dunkley managed just 1 off the five balls she faced before playing down the wrong line to a Jess Kerr delivery which angled back in and hit the top of middle stump.Kerr grabbed her second, hitting Danni Wyatt low on the front pad with a full toss and England were 88 for 5.Jones had another big job to do to rescue her side and she would again need Dean’s help after calling Knight through for a single and seeing her captain run out on 31 as Kerr fired the ball in from square leg to wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze to make it 95 for 6.New Zealand looked in danger of letting England off the hook, just as they did in the first two fixtures of this series, when Gaze missed a stumping opportunity as Jones, on 18, advanced out of her crease and swung herself around attempting to loft a Jonas delivery over the leg side. At that point, England were 111 for 6 and when Dean overturned an lbw decision off Bates, the ball shown to be missing the top of leg stump, she and Jones were free to press on with the union their side so desperately needed.Jones brought up her fifty with a crisp single off Kerr but she fell moments later chipping Bates straight to Eden Carson at backward point, ending her stand with Dean, who departed a short time later when she picked out Brooke Halliday at cover off Rowe. Rowe claimed her third with a short ball which Cross edged behind down the leg side.

Gabriel hits back at Richarlison jibe with savage response after Brazilian striker brags over Tottenham's north London derby victory over Arsenal in Hong Kong

The north London rivalry has found a new lease of life on social media after Tottenham forward Richarlison took a cheeky swipe at Arsenal’s Gabriel following their pre-season meeting in Hong Kong. The Brazilian striker, who played a key role in Spurs’ 1-0 win over the Gunners, took to Instagram to share a photo of his Man of the Match trophy and that sparked a online feud between the two stars.

While Richarlison celebrated Tottenham’s narrow win in Asia, he chose to tag Gabriel in the post in a seemingly light-hearted jab directed at his international team-mate. However, the Arsenal centre-back wasn’t about to let Richarlison’s post go unanswered. Though he didn’t feature in the pre-season match due to his ongoing recovery from injury, Gabriel responded by sharing photos of three Premier League Man of the Match trophies he earned in past north London derbies.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gabriel's trophies weren’t from friendlies or exhibition games; they came in the heat of Premier League clashes where the stakes were far higher. Gabriel made sure to remind his compatriot that, when it truly matters, he has consistently risen above.

One of those came during the 2023–24 campaign, when he starred in Arsenal’s thrilling 3-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Prior to that, the Brazilian defender was also named Man of the Match in both north London clashes from the previous season. He helped keep Spurs at bay in a gritty 1-0 away victory and shone again in a tightly contested 2-1 home win for Arsenal.

'Drained' Zampa withdrew from IPL to put family and body first

Adam Zampa opted out of IPL 2024 due to being “completely drained” from the previous 12 months while the uncertainty of how much cricket he would have played was also a factor as he switches his focus to June’s T20 World Cup.Zampa had been due to join Rajasthan Royals but withdrew on the eve of the season having been involved through Royals’ previous campaign. He was a key figure in Australia’s ODI World Cup last year triumph during which he had to battle various injuries. He then briefly stayed on for the start of the T20I series against India before leaving partway through.Related

  • Rajasthan Royals' Adam Zampa pulls out of IPL 2024

  • 'Blank page' for Australia's Test batting reserves and Agar's strong World Cup chance

His home season consisted of the BBL for Melbourne Renegades where he made eight appearances followed by the white-ball series against West Indies and New Zealand.”There are several reasons why the IPL wasn’t for me this year. I think the most important one was the fact that it’s a World Cup year and I’m completely drained from 2023,” Zampa told the podcast. “I did the full IPL last year. Obviously, the World Cup was three months in India as well.”So I had the best intentions of trying to play the IPL again this year. But once push came to shove, I felt like I just couldn’t really offer the Rajasthan Royals the best version of myself and looking forward to the World Cup, that’s what’s more important to me, that’s for sure.”Zampa, who appeared six times for Royals last season where he took eight wickets, also wasn’t sure how many games he would get if he had gone through another long stint away from home with the franchise having Indian spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin.Adam Zampa will be a key figure in Australia’s World Cup attack•Getty Images

“It came down to my decision being I probably need to put my body and my mental health first,” he said. “Then you throw a lot of other things into the equation as well, like the fact that I’ve got a young family. It’s not easy to spend nine weeks in India in my situation where I’m fighting for my spot in the team as well.”It’s not like I can say to myself, ‘well, that’s alright I’ve got 14 games to prepare for a World Cup’. I don’t know whether or not that’s actually going to be two games or four games or six games. So I kind of worked out that maybe just to rest, putting my family first, putting my body first, was better for me.”It’s not an easy decision because you’ve always got that voice in the back of your mind going, ‘pulling out of the IPL, what are people going to say? What happens the next time you want to go to the IPL? Do people kind of paint you with that brush?’. But I wasn’t too fussed about it once I made that decision, I knew it was the right one.”Zampa will be a key figure in Australia’s quest to unite all three men’s world titles at the T20 World Cup having taken the Test Championship and ODI crowns during 2023. Earlier this year, Mitchell Marsh, who is set to captain the side at the tournament, stressed how pivotal he was.”Zamps is by far our most important bowler and probably our most important player in this team,” Marsh said after the West Indies series.Having operated alongside Glenn Maxwell during the ODI World Cup as Australia’s spin pairing, there is a good chance Zampa will be joined by another spin option in the squad for the Caribbean with Ashton Agar in the frame for a recall. The initial World Cup squad needs to be named by May 1 but can be freely amended on May 25.
