Sri Lankan legspinner withdraws because of chronic heel pain in left foot
Nagraj Gollapudi06-Apr-2024Sunrisers Hyderabad legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of IPL 2024 because of chronic heel pain in his left foot. Hasaranga had not yet joined the Sunrisers squad and ESPNcricinfo has learned that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed BCCI of his unavailability for the season. There’s been no confirmation on a replacement for Hasaranga but it is understood Sunrisers are on the lookout.Hasaranaga, who last played during Sri Lanka’s limited-overs series in Bangladesh in March, was treated by SLC medical staff who suspected the pain in his left heel was because of wear and tear of the musculo-skeletal apparatus. He was meant to travel overseas for specialist consultation before getting clearance from SLC to play in the IPL. Sunrisers head coach Daniel Vettori said on Thursday that Hasaranga had consulted a specialist in Dubai, following which the news of his withdrawal emerged.Hasaranga was bought by Sunrisers at his base price of INR 1.5 crore (approx USD $181,000) at the 2024 IPL auction in December last year. He was previously with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who paid INR 10.75 crore for him at the 2022 IPL auction. He had a superb season in 2022, taking 26 wickets with an economy of 7.54, but in 2023 he played only eight games and took nine wickets with an economy of 8.9.Hasaranga will be a key player for Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup, which starts on June 1 in the USA and the Caribbean, if he recovers in time for the tournament.Earlier this month, Hasaranga was suspended from playing Sri Lanka’s ongoing Tests against Bangladesh, after racking up eight demerit points for breaching article 2.8 of the players’ code of conduct during the third ODI against Bangladesh. Had Hasaranga, who had just come out of Test retirement prior to the ban, been unavailable for the red-ball games, he would have missed the initial matches of the T20 World Cup.SLC, however, dismissed claims that Hasaranga’s return from retirement was a ploy to make sure he was available for the T20 World Cup, stating that he had informed them in an email on March 16 of his desire to be considered for Test cricket selection going forward, citing his improved fitness levels.

Juventus general manager Damien Comolli says the club will not accept an offer from Marseille for Timothy Weah unless it matches their asking price.
Juventus say Marseille haven't made offer for WeahClubs will have to match their asking priceComolli asserts USMNT man can't force a moveFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?
Comolli has taken a stern stance on players who want to leave the club this summer. When asked about the situation surrounding Weah, the Juventus director clarified that the American striker wants to move to France. However, he asserted that players can't dictate the transfer window and the club will only allow a transfer if the price offered is right.

Weah and Samuel Mbangula were offered to Nottingham Forest for a combined fee of €22 million (£19m/$25m). This offer was rejected by Weah, but Juve, in a bid to force a move, benched him for the Club World Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City. This did not sit well with the player's agent, who called the tactic a 'disgrace'. Now, with Marseille's offer on the table, the club are reportedly playing hardball. Weah's agent accuses the club of raising his asking price to cause problems for the player. Comolli further added that the striker also runs the risk of spending time on the sidelines.
WHAT COMOLLI SAID
Comolli, in his interview with Sky Sport, said: "He wants to go to Marseille, but in football you can't choose a team, because if the right offer doesn't come, you're left on the sidelines. And the offer hasn't arrived yet."

Marseille have reportedly bid around €15m (£13m/$17m) plus add-ons for Weah but Comolli reportedly wants the French club to up their bid to €20m (£17m/$23m). The Serie A club want to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain, and for that, they can look to generate funds by parting ways with Weah.

WHAT HAPPENED?
After joining Bayern from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen in June and representing them at the Club World Cup, Tah is ready to take on the leadership role at the club and believes that's what the Bavarians expect of him.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Tah spent 10 years at Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in 2023-24 under Xabi Alonso's mentorship. He came close to joining Bayern last summer, but was convinced by the Spanish coach to stay at the BayArena for another year. Although his contract at Leverkusen was set to end at the end of June, Bayern paid a transfer fee to ensure he could represent Vincent Kompany's side at the Club World Cup. He led the team's defence in the competition and helped them make their way to the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.
WHAT TAH SAID
Tah revealed the reason behind signing for Bayern, telling club media: "It was a step out of my comfort zone for me, and I did that quite consciously: I had a great time in Leverkusen for ten years, the club and I myself developed further, and now I felt it was time for me to get to know a completely new environment again. But I think it's also important to question yourself from time to time and think: What can I do to take another step, to grow – as a person, but also as a footballer. That's why I made this decision."
He spoke of taking up the leadership role as well, saying: "I want to take on responsibility here. That's the expectation the club has of me, and probably the team's as well, but above all, it's the expectation I have of myself. You don't just come here and say: 'Here I am, I'm taking on responsibility now.' You have to perform, and then it will come with time, with games, with many training sessions – both on and off the pitch. You can't demand something from others that you don't live yourself. Only then can I begin to expect that from others and then push them."

Kent 203 for 7 (Evison 50* Crawley 41, Balderson 3-62) vs LancashireKent’s Joey Evison made his third fifty of the season but could not prevent Lancashire having the best of the first day of their Vitality County Championship match against Kent at Emirates Old Trafford.Evison was helped by Grant Stewart, with whom he put on 69 for the seventh wicket, a stand in which both batsmen took the attack to Lancashire’s Test spinners, Nathan Lyon and Tom Hartley, on a cloudy afternoon in Manchester. The pair came together with their side poorly placed on 129 for six after George Balderson had taken three prime wickets in 28 balls, but their calculated aggression had enabled the visitors to reach 203 for seven, with Evison unbeaten on 50, when rain arrived five overs into the evening session and prevented any chance of a resumption. But Evison and Lyon’s aggression was in sharp contrast to the watchful opening 75 minutes of the day, in which 45 runs were scored in 17 overs. However, Kent then lost three wickets in four overs. Ben Compton was the first to go when he pushed forward to a delivery from Balderson and was caught by wicketkeeper Matty Hurst for 13.Zak Crawley then stroked a trio of fine fours off successive balls from Balderson but was dismissed for 41 in the next over when his flat-footed cover drive to Will Williams merely nicked another catch to Hurst. And Lancashire’s best period of the morning was completed a few minutes later when Balderson nipped one away from Daniel Bell-Drummond and the Kent skipper was caught by George Bell at third slip for three. But the session also ended well for the home side when Jack Leaning was bowled for four when a ball from Balderson snaked inside his loose off drive and knocked back the leg stump. That meant Kent had lost four wickets for 27 runs and it left the home side poorly placed on 76 for four at lunch.Matters got no better for Kent on the resumption when Harry Finch was pinned on the crease by Williams for three to leave the visitors on 83 for five. However, Evison showed no sign of being overawed and put on 46 with Joe Denly, who then tried to take on Jennings, the long-on fielder, and was caught by the Lancashire skipper off Lyon for 18.By mid-afternoon Lyon was bowling in tandem with Hartley, a tactic to which Evison and Stewart responded with selective attack rather than dull quiescence. Stewart showed a particular keenness to swat Lyon through the off side whenever the Australian pitched short and brought up the pair’s fifty partnership when he thumped Hartley over long-on for six.Only six balls could be bowled after tea before a brief interruption for rain and shortly after the players returned, Evison reached his fifty off 117 balls with a single off Lyon. But joy in the away dressing-room was short-lived as Stewart was caught by Luke Wells off the very next delivery when he pushed forward with uncharacteristic caution and nicked a simple catch to slip.Balderson ended the day with three for 62 and Lyon took two for 42, while Williams, who took two for 28 from 15 overs, needs just one more to bring up his 200 in first-class cricket.

Home side made to follow on despite hundred from opener, career-best from nightwatcher
ECB Reporters Network19-May-2024Opener Rishi Patel, with his first century of the season, and nightwatcher Scott Currie, led the fightback as Leicestershire’s batters fought to save the game on the third day of the Vitality County Championship match against Gloucestershire at the UptonSteel County Ground, Grace Road. The two batted throughout the morning without being parted, and although Patel was bowled shortly after lunch, Currie remained unbeaten in the afternoon session, reaching a maiden first-class half century.Currie was finally dismissed shortly after tea, one of four wickets to fall as Gloucestershire maintained their hopes of enforcing victory on the final day. But they will need all ten wickets in Leicestershire’s second innings as Patel, in company with Marcus Harris, saw the home side through to the close without being parted after the visitors enforced the follow on.Patel demonstrated a determination to be positive from the off after Leicestershire resumed on 133 for 5 on a cloudless morning in the East Midlands. Having made a painstaking 51 from 136 deliveries the previous evening, the 25-year-old played a series of glorious straight drives in adding 24 to his score from the first 16 balls he faced before settling back into his innings – at least until he was on 86, whereupon he hit the legspin of Ed Middleton for four, four and six off consecutive deliveries, the century coming off 203 deliveries and including 13 fours and two maximums.Only once had there been a real rush of blood, a mighty swing and miss against Middleton. Bracey took off the bails and appealed, but Patel’s back foot had – just – remained in his crease. At the other end, Currie was unmoveable, the only time he looked at all likely to get out coming when he twice tried to cut Middleton through the off side, missing on both occasions. Solid and impressively determined defence saw him go to lunch unbeaten on 19, made from 119 deliveries.Having delayed taking the new ball for a couple of overs after the break, Gloucestershire had almost immediate joy when they did so, Matt Taylor producing a peach of a delivery to remove Patel’s off stump. That was the only moment of celebration in the session for the visitors, however, as Ben Cox picked up where Patel had left off, scoring at a run a ball, while Currie did nothing different, defending his wicket against all-comers and just occasionally unfurling a classy attacking shot. Having passed his previous first class best of 44, he went to his 50 off 182 balls, having hit five fours, and continued to play in exactly the same exemplary manner until tea.Gloucestershire needed a quick breakthrough after the interval and it came first ball, Cox leg before to Middleton after missing a sweep. Currie too was given leg before on the back foot to Taylor soon afterwards, and Ben Mike missed a slog at an Ollie Price delivery which turned a touch and hit off stump. Price only needed two more deliveries to dismiss last man Josh Hull, leg before on the back foot.

Pakistan slip to 23-run loss in second T20I at Edgbaston, despite Fakhar fireworks

Jofra Archer takes the plaudits after claiming his comeback wicket•Getty Images
Jofra Archer took 2 for 28 and was clocked at 92mph/148kph in his first professional match in 385 days, as he overcame an expensive start to close out England’s victory over Pakistan at Edgbaston.Playing in front of an international crowd in England for the first time since the 2019 Ashes, Archer slashed his first ball for four and crunched his third for six in a four-ball cameo of 12 not out. But his first over cost 15 runs, as Fakhar Zaman swung him over midwicket for four and scooped him for six after Babar Azam had rifled Archer’s second ball over mid-off.But he struck with the first ball of his next over when Azam Khan chipped to short cover – prompting a broad smile after months of rehabilitation – and effectively sealed the win when he had Imad Wasim caught at deep point in his final over. He conceded a solitary boundary in his final three overs and was regularly clocked at 90mph/145kph or above.Jos Buttler, who described Archer’s performance as “brilliant”, was named player of the match for his own innings of 84 off 51 balls. Buttler looked scratchy early on but ruthlessly targeted Shadab Khan, who bowled four wicketless overs for 55, only a fortnight after conceding his previous worst figures of 0 for 54 against Ireland. Buttler brought up 3,000 T20I runs in the process, the first Englishman to reach the landmark.Pakistan kept the required rate manageable for much of their pursuit of 184, thanks primarily to Fakhar’s powerful innings of 45 off 21 from No. 4. But they lost wickets too regularly, with no partnership lasting for even 30 balls, and were eventually bowled out with four balls unused.Buttler goes through the gearsButtler, playing a record-equalling 115th T20I for England, inside-edged his fourth ball past his leg stump and though he and Phil Salt traded boundaries in the first three overs, they both struggled for timing. Salt fell early, hauling Imad Wasim’s first ball to Shaheen Afridi at wide long-on, but Will Jacks looked in pristine touch at No. 3.He lofted the fifth ball he faced for a straight six off Haris Rauf – playing his first match since February, when he dislocated his shoulder at the PSL – and had 21 off 10 balls at the end of the Powerplay, crashing boundaries through the covers off both Haris and Mohammad Amir. At the same stage, Buttler had a more sedate 19 off 17.Jos Buttler top-scored with 84 off 51 balls•AFP via Getty Images
But Shadab’s introduction prompted a change in Buttler’s approach: he slapped the first ball of the legspinner’s over for four, and the final ball disappeared over long-on. Buttler went through his repertoire, deftly scooping Haris for six in between reverse-sweeping and reverse-slog-sweeping Shadab for four and then six. All told, he took 40 off the 15 balls he faced from him.England’s middle-order slideAfter Jacks slapped Rauf to point, Jonny Bairstow ground out four runs off his first 10 balls before slog-sweeping Shadab for six in his final over, which cost 20. He crunched Shaheen over extra cover for four then flicked his full toss away for six, but his top-edged pull to deep square leg set about a collapse of 5 for 25 in 25 balls.Imad – whose four miserly overs cost only 19 runs – bowled Harry Brook as he backed away second-ball, while Buttler mistimed Haris’ slower ball to long-on as he looked to launch at the death. His 84 was his highest score in any international cricket since his hundred against South Africa in February 2023.Shaheen struck twice in his final over, having Moeen Ali caught at wide long-on and Chris Jordan top-edging to short fine leg. Having looked set for 200, England at least went past 180 thanks to Archer’s cameo but when Liam Livingstone could only toe-end the final ball of the innings back to Amir, Pakistan looked in the game.Moeen’s tight startAfter 14 months since his last match for England, Archer had to wait another five overs until he was brought into the attack: Buttler threw the new ball to Moeen instead, and Mohammad Rizwan fell into the trap. After defending the first two balls of the innings, Rizwan charged down looking to haul Moeen over the leg side but could only pick out Livingstone at short midwicket.Reece Topley shared the new ball with Archer held back, and struck in his second over when Saim Ayub swung his rising length ball straight to deep square leg. Fakhar was nearly dismissed by the first ball he faced, edging just past Moeen at wide slip, but then deftly scooped his second for four and swung his fourth through midwicket.Archer’s comebackArcher’s first ball was right on the money at 86mph/138kph, but his first over – the sixth – cost 15 as Fakhar raced to 27 off his first nine balls. But Babar fell without making much of a dent in the target, trapped lbw on the sweep by Moeen for 32 off 26 balls: the sort of innings that ignites debate over his role in Pakistan’s T20I side.Fakhar continued to attack, swinging Moeen into the third tier of the pavilion, but struggled to get on strike. Adil Rashid – playing his first match since the ILT20 in February – conceded seven runs in his first two overs and accounted for Shadab, whose difficult afternoon culminated in a miscued slog-sweep to long-on.Azam [Khan] crashed Jordan for back-to-back boundaries through point but when he miscued Archer to short cover, England were back on top. Archer’s second over cost only a single, and after Fakhar fell for 45 – swinging Livingstone down to long-on – the required rate climbed towards 12.Imad and Iftikhar both briefly threatened, both launching towering sixes, but after the latter holed out off Topley, England’s seamers closed things out. Jordan, Archer and Topley conceded a solitary boundary between them in the final 20 balls of the innings, with Shaheen caught at deep midwicket to leave Pakistan bowled out 24 short of their target.
