Man City enter race for Tottenham star Alderweireld

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City have entered the race to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to TeamTalk.

The Belgium international has a £25million release clause in his contract and is seemingly poised to leave the club once the transfer window reopens.

What’s the word?

Manchester United have long been seen as favourites to land Alderweireld, according to the report.

But City have entered the race as they look to bolster their defence in the transfer window.

The report claims that the Premier League champions want a long-term partner for Aymeric Laporte, with Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones both failing to convince the club’s hierarchy. Vincent Kompany, too, is a constant injury doubt.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG are also interested in signing Alderweireld.

But the Belgium international is said to be keen to stay in England.

United deal suits Spurs better

Pochettino needs a replacement to Alderweireld.

And TeamTalk claim that United remain confident of signing the Belgian, while Spurs could potentially return to Old Trafford to sign his successor.

Pochettino is said, per the report, to be keen on the potential signing of Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly.

Alderweireld’s departure will leave a major hole at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, so elite have his performances been.

Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen are likely to become Pochettino’s first-choice partnership in the 30-year-old’s stead, but Bailly would offer an excellent alternative.

Sending Alderweireld to Old Trafford would surely smooth that path over.

Daniel Levy, then, either needs to do business quickly before City’s interest becomes concrete or attempt to convince Alderweireld to move to Old Trafford instead of the Etihad.

It remains to be seen if that can be done, however.

Two possible lineups if Maguire and Tielemans both leave Leicester

[ad_pod ]

Following Leicester’s drubbing of Arsenal last weekend, there’s been some potentially worrying news on the transfer front for fans of the Foxes.

The Sun claimed at the beginning of the week that Manchester City were showing an interest in central defender Harry Maguire.

There was also a concerning update regarding loanee Youri Tielemans, who according to The Daily Star has Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham all chasing him.

Tielemans has been an instant hit at the King Power whilst Maguire has transformed Leicester’s defence in the two seasons he’s now been at the club. They’d both be huge loses, but with their possible departures looming, we came up with two alternative Leicester starting XIs for if they left.

Plan A – Choudhury benefits

This is quite a traditional Leicester formation that’s been deployed in recent years. However, it sees two main beneficiaries with Maguire possibly leaving and Tielemans not completing a permanent move.

One of which is Filip Benkovic. The young Croatian has starred on loan at Celtic this season and thrived under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers when the Scot was still with the Hoops. His progression has already been impressive and Foxes fans can look forward to him returning next term.

Hamza Choudhury also benefits from Tielemans leaving. His performances this season have been hugely promising, no less so than against Arsenal. He comes in as a like-for-like swap for Tielemans with James Maddison now being the creative outlet. This formation hangs on Harvey Barnes and Damarai Gray both realising their potentials.

The pair have the quality to be stand out players for the Foxes next season and could help provide the creative spark that will be missing if Tielemans isn’t signed permanently.

Plan B – three man defence

This is a very different looking side and would rely on a complete change of system. Again Benkovic and Choudhury benefit from the departures but it could see Rodgers utilise a three man defence.

Ricardo Pereira and Ben Chilwell are both exceptional going forward which would make them excellent wing backs. Meanwhile, Caglar Soyuncu also gets a chance. He’s had a very unproductive first season in English football, but with Maguire potentially on his way out, this could be the ideal opportunity for the Turk to step up.

In this system, it sees Jamie Vardy paired with Kalechi Iheanacho in attack. He is another player who has struggled since making the move to the King Power but the potential he showed at Manchester City means it shouldn’t be too long before he thrives once again. At 22, he still has the world at his feet.

Both Maguire and Tielemans are huge players for Leicester, but these two predicted XIs show they aren’t irreplaceable.

Rangers should think twice before moving for Andre Gray

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are reportedly eyeing a move for Andre Gray, but is he the right man to possibly replace Alfredo Morelos?

What’s the story?

According to The Evening Times, Steven Gerrard is considering a loan approach for Gray, who has scored nine times for Watford this season.

The report continues that Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Greg Stewart are all expected to become Rangers players this summer, and that Gray is now a target as well.

The 27 year-old cost Watford £18m two years ago but has struggled to hit the back of the net consistently, which begs the question; why on Earth would Rangers want to sign him?

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

A dreadful signing

A recent report in The Express said Morelos is on “thin ice” after his red card in the Old Firm, so one would have to assume Gray is being targeted as a possible replacement for the Colombian.

However, the problem is that there is nothing in Gray’s past to suggest he can come anywhere close to the 29 goals Morelos has bagged this campaign.

Gray has struck 30 goals in a season once in his career, in the fifth tier of English football in 2013/14, and he did break the 20-goal barrier with 23 Championship strikes in the 2015/16 season, per Transfermarkt.

Since entering the top flight though, he has mustered ten, five and nine goals in the last three seasons, a truly woeful scoring record of just 24 league goals in three whole years..

There seems to be an assumption that any striker capable of scoring a few goals down south will be unstoppable in the SPFL, and Jermain Defoe has certainly looked comfortably since his move to Ibrox, but the difference is Defoe actually scored goals in the Premier League.

Gray has struggled to be anything more than an average top flight player, and given that he would likely want to become the highest-paid payer at Ibrox – he currently makes £70,000-a-week, per Sportrac – this is a move Gerrard and the Gers should steer well clear of.

Crystal Palace fans react to Manchester United’s derisory offer for Aaron Wan-Bissaka

[ad_pod ]

The phone at Selhurst Park will likely ring constantly throughout the summer transfer window, with Crystal Palace surely doing their best to keep Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha, both of whom had excellent 2018/19 campaigns and look very capable of playing for a top side.

If a Manchester City or a Manchester United come in with the big bucks we all know they have, though, the Eagles could lose one of their star assets. Fortunately, the latter’s reported first offer for right-back Wan-Bissaka falls well short of the mark and Palace fans are furious.

According to The Evening Standard, the Red Devils are set to test the waters with a £25m bid, although this is likely to be scoffed at by Steve Parish and co, with Wan-Bissaka surely valued at near double that figure if not more.

Which player with “no potential” has just been named Crystal Palace’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video below…

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the best one-on-one defenders in the Premier League and has impressed greatly with his excellent timing in the tackle and athleticism down the right flank since breaking through to the first team in early 2018.

Here’s what the SE25 faithful had to say about the eight-figure offer on Twitter…

Forgotten goalkeeper Simon Mignolet posts about Liverpool season on Instagram

Despite being on the fringes of the Liverpool squad, Mignolet clearly feels strongly about the club’s success moving forward.

The Belgian also seems popular amongst the Liverpool fan-base and in his six years at the club he has made a strong connection with them.

Since joining from Sunderland in 2013 for £9m, the 31-year-old has made 204 appearances keeping 66 clean-sheets and made himself a hero on his debut with a penalty save to deny Jonathan Walters.

Mignolet was Liverpool’s established number one until the 2017/18 season after some high profile errors saw Loris Karius take his place.

Mignolet signed a brand-new five year deal in 2016, so it will be interesting to see if he stays at Liverpool and is content with a place on the bench or whether he decides to move on and seek first-team football.

His Instagram post, though, suggests that he’s happy to be part of the club for now.

Arsenal fans will love the relationship between Xhaka and Aubameyang on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

Granit Xhaka was quick to take to Instagram after Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Valencia in the Europa League Semi-Final first leg.

/Bw-ZhCWg0RO/

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored what could prove to be a crucial third in the dying embers of the game and the Gabon striker was quick to respond to Xhaka’s post.

Xhaka has improved massively for Arsenal this season and on Thursday he provided an excellent assist for Alexandre Lacazette’s second, whipping a delightful ball onto the head of the Frenchman.

He also provided Aubameyang with a chance to score in the first half but the 29-year-old blasted his shot over the bar.

Xhaka has emerged as a real leader in the Arsenal dressing room, as was showcased when Koscielny handed him the armband after being substituted.

The combative midfielder has turned his Arsenal career around under Emery this season and when fit must surely be one of the first names on the team-sheet.

Xhaka is the link Arsenal need to get the best out of Lacazette and Aubameyang. Without Xhaka both would likely become isolated from the rest of the Arsenal team.

Aubameyang certainly seems to appreciate the former Borussia Mönchengladbach man and his importance within the team is clear to see both on and off the field.

Crystal Palace: Handing out-of-favour Connor Wickham new contract makes no sense

It’s almost as if Crystal Palace don’t want their striker crisis to end.

Indeed, rather than working on the deals for signing some quality strikers, they’re seemingly rewarding the mediocrity which has plagued their seasons over the past few years.

Maybe Steve Parish is deluded enough to think Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend will be there to save the day all the time. Well, he’s certainly divided opinion by extending the contract of outcast Connor Wickham, who only made seven appearances all season last time out. In those, he only netted one goal and assisted one in the meantime.

Terrible, terrible stuff.

While it seemed like Wickham was on the rise after his FA Cup stunner against Tottenham Hotspur, the ghost of injury haunted him again. That being said, Palace shouldn’t become the club which empathizes too much with injury-prone players. They can’t afford to waste money on players on the sidelines all the time, especially considering how toothless their attack has been.

Obviously, Wickham looked a lethal striker years ago but has lost his lethal finishing ability with all his persistent injuries. Why reward a player who’s turned into a has-been and lost the ability to compete at the top? Something only Parish can answer.

Rewarding a player who last scored a Premier League goal three years ago shows Palace’s lack of urgency in boosting the striker’s department. Frankly, as long as the inconsistent striker is a viable option, the Eagles will never be able to break into the top half of the highly competitive league.
