Crystal Palace interest in Clyne and McCarthy proves Parish hasn’t learned his lesson

[ad_pod ]If you’re a supporter of Crystal Palace, you don’t need me to tell you that the club’s transfer strategy – if there even is one – is slightly botched.Since being promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2013, it feels as if the Eagles haven’t signed a single player who has been sold for profit.Let’s scratch beneath the surface a bit more. Dwight Gayle was signed for £6m and he scored a respectable 26 goals in 74 appearances. He was sold for just £9m – a profit, but only a slim one.Yannick Bolasie was another notable player sold for profit, a man who was signed for just £350k and sold for £25m.However, aside from those cases and the freakish transformation of youth-team-winger-turned-quality-right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which saw Palace net £50m this summer, the strategy looks bleak.

You could argue that the south Londoners wouldn’t get their money back on any player in their squad apart from Andros Townsend at £13m, Luka Milivojevic at £12m, profit on free transfers Vicente Guaita and Max Meyer, as well as Wilfried Zaha, of course.

But would Palace get their £9.5m back on 29-year-old Cheikhou Kouyate? Their £9m back on one-goal Alexander Sorloth? Their £10m back on 30-year-old James Tomkins? They certainly wouldn’t ever get near to their outlays spent on the injury prone duo of Mamadou Sakho and Christian Benteke, spending £26m and £27m respectively on the pair who can be classified as vanity signings the Eagles should never have brought to the club.

Worryingly, Palace’s squad is hardly littered with young players carrying the potential of a sudden markup in market value. Out of those considered first-team players, only Zaha, Max Meyer, Jairo Riedewald, Sorloth, Jeffrey Schlupp and the permanently injured Connor Wickham are under the age of 28.

It seems as if Parish isn’t learning his lesson on this front judging by some recent transfer news concerning Palace.

The 2016 FA Cup finalists have been linked with moves for Nathaniel Clyne and James McCarthy, both of whom fall perfectly into the category of everything negative outlined above.

Injury prone? Check. Nearing their thirties with little chance of selling for a profit? Check. High wages as a result of them being experienced top-flight players? Check. Clyne earns £70k-a-week, whilst McCarthy earns £50k.

We thought that Parish had learned when he sanctioned the arrival of then 22-year-old Max Meyer, an exciting young prospect who could see his stock grow easily over the years. An extortionate £125k-a-week salary and a total of just 15 league starts has soured the merits of a deal that initially appeared to be a progressive stroke of genius.

According to Goal, Liverpool value Clyne at £15m.

The England international, though, has suffered knee ligament damage and will be out for six months, so a deal during this window looks unlikely. A lucky escape, but for how long?

In McCarthy’s case, the Irishman suffered a horrible leg break back in 2018, which ruled him out for 350 days, and he has since been unable to get back into the Toffees’ first-team.

With his injury problems in mind, it’s fair to assume there’s little chance Palace will see a future return on their initial £10m investment.

Needs must and all that, but Palace have been plugging gaps for too long and it will start to catch up on them eventually in the shape of the Premier League exit door.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Nobody expects Palace to become Liverpool and find gems comparable with the £8m deal for Andy Robertson, but when bottom-half rivals such as Bournemouth are even showing foresight in the market, there are few excuses for not doing the same.

The Cherries made shrewd investments when signing Lys Mousset and Tyrone Mings for £5.4m and £8m respectively, players who they have moved on this summer for £10m and £20m despite being firmly on the fringes at the Vitality Stadium.

It is disappointing to see Palace attempt to reinvest their Wan-Bissaka money in two players who carry little by way of future resale value, and reported interest suggests Parish is failing to learn from his mistakes.

Tottenham hit with Juan Foyth injury blow

[ad_pod ]

Juan Foyth has been ruled out until September after sustaining a ligament injury during the club’s pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich, the club have confirmed.

What’s the word?

The defender endured a lateral ligament injury to his left ankle, per the club’s press release, as they beat the Bundesliga giants on penalties in the Audi Cup.

Foyth was already set to miss the opening two games of the campaign, against Aston Villa and Manchester City, due to suspension.

But he is now also likely to miss Premier League clashes with Newcastle United and Arsenal, with the Argentina international set to return to training in early September.

Spurs play Crystal Palace on September 14th, a potential return date for the 21-year-old.

Worst possible time

Foyth’s injury comes at the worst possible time for the defender, personally.

Football FanCast understands that he was poised to play as a right-back throughout the season after the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

Now, though, the door has been opened to both Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters to grab the opportunity that was to be handed to the Argentine.

Of course, Foyth was set to miss the opening two games but, even so, either Aurier or Walker-Peters now have a run of four encounters, maybe more, to nail down the spot.

It is heartbreaking for Foyth and while he is likely to play a major role in the club’s 2019/20 season, he could be left with his nose pressed up against the shop window through no fault of his own.

His injury could not have come at a worse time.

Rangers fans defend Filip Helander after post-match criticism

Rangers fans have been left to defend the performance of Filip Helander on Twitter after the defender received criticism from Bill Young.

Steven Gerrard’s team beat East Fife with a comfortable showing in a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon as Jermain Defoe and Joe Aribo found the back of the net.

Also on the scoresheet, however, was Helander who popped up with a goal and an assist on his debut.

The 26-year-old was signed from Bologna this summer and made an instant impact in the Scottish League cup.

Some fans praised the Sweden international as two claimed he didn’t put a foot wrong during the game. Another called the criticism of Helander controversial as a further individual was impressed with his ability in the air.

The performance of the centre-back appeared commanding, one fan describing how he strolled it.

The 6 foot 4 defender has eight caps for his country, earning his first appearance in 2017. He completed a £3.5m move from Serie A over the course of the transfer window.

Here’s what Rangers fans have said about him.

Manchester United are "absolutely right" in letting Alexis Sanchez leave, says Tony Cascarino

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Writing for The Times, Tony Cascarino has insisted Manchester United are “absolutely right” in allowing Alexis Sanchez to leave on loan this summer.

What did he say?

The Chile international will spend this season on loan with Inter, with United still expected to cover a large portion of the star’s mammoth wages.

However, Cascarino is adamant the Red Devils have made the right call on the 30-year-old, and revealed he could understand why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted him out of Old Trafford.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “Manchester United are absolutely right to get rid of Alexis Sánchez. I don’t think Sánchez has been a serious professional for a few years now. His attitude in his final year at Arsenal was poor and since joining United he hasn’t seemed interested. He’s lost his hunger, his sharpness and his desire.

“How many times have we watched him play for United and expected him to deliver? Both in big games, when a player should be hungry to prove himself, and then in cup games against weaker opposition, we have watched, waited and been disappointed.

“Sánchez has been a symbol of United’s struggles and of their careless approach to recruitment, and so, given the absence of any kind of form, I can understand why the United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted him out of Old Trafford.”

Ruthless

To let a player of Sanchez’s reputation go when the numbers up front are already startlingly thin proves Solskjaer has some serious guts. The United boss appears to be intent on blooding the club’s talented youngsters into the first-team, and someone like Mason Greenwood will be a prime figure to feature more prominently this season thanks to the Chilean’s departure.

Getting rid of Sanchez – even if it only is on a loan deal – represents a huge statement that United will refuse to carry any passengers under Solskjaer. Perform or leave. Whilst it’s a move that could potentially back-fire given the Red Devils’ lack of depth, it’s a promising sign the club are embracing the need to make tough decisions.

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman closing in on Victor Camarasa deal

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Spanish media outlet Marca, via Football Espana, Crystal Palace appear to be closing in on a deal to sign Real Betis midfielder Victor Camarasa as sporting director Dougie Freedman finally looks set to pull a top summer signing out of the bag for the Eagles.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Marca report that the south London outfit have already agreed terms with the 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff City in the Premier League.

Marca say that the deal has been held up slightly over the structure of a potential deal, with Betis initially rejecting a proposal for a loan-to-buy option on the Spaniard.

The report adds that a transfer now looks set to be concluded for a fee ranging between €12m-€15m (£11m-£13.7m), with the south London outfit set to strengthen their central midfield options.

[ad_pod ]

Freedman finally delivers

It would be fair to say that it has been a long and frustrating summer in the transfer market for many Palace supporters, who have seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka depart for Manchester United and only free-agent goalkeeper Stephen Henderson and last season’s loanee Jordan Ayew arrive at Selhurst Park.

Watch Crystal Palace Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Freedman clearly hasn’t enjoyed much luck elsewhere as the days have rolled on, but now it appears he is getting closer to Camarasa – and what a signing he could be.

The 25-year-old is a good age and would arrive in south London with Premier League experience following his spell with the Bluebirds last term – five goals, four assists and 1.4 key passes per game in a struggling team prove what he is capable of from an attacking point of view, while WhoScored also list one of his strengths as his defensive contribution.

In addition, former Eagles manager Neil Warnock, who is in charge of the now Championship outfit, has labelled him as “one of the best midfield players I’ve had” – high praise indeed.

To get a player of his quality for potentially less than £14m has to be seen as a big win the current climate of extortionate transfer fees, and Freedman will deserve a big pat on the back if he gets a deal over the line.

Have Sky Sports been exposed as liars this summer? Watch the video below to find out why…

With the likes of Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate already bossing things in the centre, Palace could be a real force to be reckoned with when it comes to midfield battles should they get Camarasa too.

Liverpool stars Wijnaldum and Matip share groovy moment at Evian training camp

Ah. Life’s eternal question.

Admittedly, we did spare a few minutes to ponder on Wijnaldum’s query and our conclusion is as follows: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reigns supreme as the silkiest shapes man in Merseyside while Xherdan Shaqiri, the human block, and worst of the lot, strikes us as someone who’s a little overzealous with the ‘sprinkler.’

Who’d have thought.

Barcelona should drop Luis Suarez in favour of Antoine Griezmann

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Last weekend, Barcelona finally clinched their first three points of the new La Liga season, and Antoine Griezmann, their new star signing, was at the centre of it all, scoring two goals and assisting one. It was a huge change from his previous outing for the Catalans and a result of one simple tweak: no Luis Suarez in the lineup due to injury.

On the chalkboard

Ever since he arrived at the club, Suarez has been a key figure for Barcelona and a regular first-team member. His influence should not be questioned as the Uruguayan has scored a total of 177 goals for the team in 248 games he played for them. Similarly impressive was his 2018/19 season, when he scored 25 goals across all competitions.

But as deadly and as influential as Suarez has been, he’s also getting pretty old. At the age of 33, he’s already lost a fair share of his intensity, pace and stamina. When we combine that with Lionel Messi, who, for all his brilliance, has similar issues due to his age, it would be wise for Barcelona to refresh their attacking trio with a slight change to the roster instead of adding their new man to the existing blueprint.

A new trident

It might seem a bit drastic at first but dropping Suarez altogether instead of just pairing him up with Griezmann would be a much better choice for Barcelona. Of course, when it comes to banging in the goals, the Uruguayan is very much still the top dog. But the Frenchman can match him in that and bring so much more to the table.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Griezmann had a similar record with Atletico Madrid, scoring 133 goals in 257 games played. Slightly less, granted, but in a much more defensive system and a team that, in general, scores fewer goals than Barcelona. And we don’t have to look much farther than last two games Blaugrana played in La Liga for proof of this thesis.

In the first game, Griezmann was deployed as a left winger because Suarez occupied the centre-forward role. In the time they were both on the pitch, the Frenchman was clearly not as effective in his wide role. He only managed three shots and made just 33 touches in the whole game.

And what happened when he was played as the sole centre-forward against Betis? Seven shots, two goals, an assist and an incredible 87 touches all over the pitch. Not only that but he also sent two key passes and was involved in all sections of the game.

As much as Suarez was the go-to forward for Barcelona in all those years, keeping him in the lineup will only limit his new 28-year-old team-mate who has everything it takes to be the team’s focal point in attack.

Charlie Nicholas doubts Everton can challenge for the top-six this season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Everton have come under fire from Charlie Nicholas already this season, and his latest comments suggest his view on their chances this season hasn’t changed.

What did he say?

The former Arsenal striker previously suggested that Marco Silva has been given the resources to spend where necessary, and although he praised the creativity in the side – with the addition of Alex Iwobi helping that department – he believes that they could be weak at the back.

That prediction has so far proved inaccurate, with Everton keeping clean sheets in two of their three Premier League games so far, and instead they have been lacking in ideas and goal-scoring threat in the Premier League, with only one goal.

In assessing Everton’s upcoming match against Wolves, Nicholas criticised Everton’s performance against Aston Villa and believes they have a lot to do if they are to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish.

In his Sky Sports predictions column, Nicholas said: “What is Everton’s shape? They had to tidy the defence up – they needed to. You saw them last week and thought, what is the belief in this team?

“I did not see anything that told me this team would threaten the top six. I did not see this materialise.”

Nicholas also predicts Everton to lose the game despite the fact Wolves have drawn each of their league matches so far, and fielded several first-team players in Thursday’s victory over Torino in a Europa League qualifier.

Lack of philosophy

The clash with Wolves does promise to be a tight game as goals haven’t exactly flowed in the games either team have played this season.

Everton have several high-quality players in the squad but Nicholas points to a lack of identity and possibly a lack of faith in their ability to win matches, although Marco Silva spoke of the squad’s personality after victory over Lincoln in the League Cup.

The Portuguese manager arrived at Goodison Park in summer 2018 but he is still yet to cement a notable identity at the club.

Everton fell some way short of the top six last season in terms of completed passes, and until they improve in possession they may find it difficult to better their record of 15 games won in 2018/19.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, last season Everton’s primary creative players – Bernard, Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson – scored or assisted 39 goals between them, and with the likes of Iwobi and Moise Kean added to the squad the Toffees should carry more of a threat.

It is too early in the season to rule them out, though. Players are still getting used to the new squad and with time they should start to produce on a regular basis.
