Sergio Ramos saga should show Ed Woodward how to deal with David De Gea

All is right with Manchester United again.

They’re playing winning football under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the majority of the squad motivated again under his watch. That being said, internal matters are seemingly in a complicated situation. Indeed, after tying Anthony Martial to a long-term contract, Ed Woodward is now looking into extending David De Gea’s stay at Old Trafford while the club’s hunt for a long-term manager rumbles on.

After the Red Devils triggered a one-year extension clause in the Spaniard’s contract until 2020, they’re now desperate to sign him to a long-term one. According to reports (via The Evening Standard), they’re prepared to hand him a mammoth £350,000-a-week contract, but the Spaniard is believed to want more.

Alexis Sanchez is currently United’s highest paid at around £400,000-a-week and the La Roja international is said to want a similar contract.

A no-brainer, right?

Well, not only would granting him that impact their balance sheet, it could also cause an uproar within the squad. While De Gea’s been their saviour many a time during the difficult, post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, United need to be wary of not dancing to his tunes. If they do, it could open up a whole can of worms.

Sergio Romero’s uprise in the cup competitions proves not only De Gea, but any talented goalkeeper can thrive at United’s world-class goalkeeping structure. While letting him leave would be a huge risk, paying him excessively will also pile external pressures on the Red Devils.

The Spaniard might’ve kept his 100th clean-sheet recently, but is taking advantage of his situation at United right now. United need to be cautious not to be conned into dancing to a player’s tune, regardless of how big he might be.

Ed Woodward has been taken for a ride by Sergio Ramos – who used United’s 2015 interest to manoeuvre a new deal at Real Madrid – during his stint in charge of footballing matters at Old Trafford, he must learn from his mistake or risk wasting even more money.

Southampton should keep faith in Valery despite Elabdellaoui links

[ad_pod ]

Southampton are eyeing a move for Olympiacos right-back Omar Elabdellaoui, according to the Daily Mail.

Cedric Soares left the club to join Inter Milan on loan, per BBC, earlier this month and the Saints are now trying to recruit a replacement before the transfer deadline on Thursday.

On the chalkboard

The aforementioned Mail report claims that the Saints are ready to pay £6million to sign Elabdellaoui, who previously played for Hull City on loan in the second half of the 2016-17 season.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is said to believe that the full international has more experience than current right-back Yan Valery, but it remains to be seen if the Norwegian will be able to dislodge the 19-year-old from his starting position.

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would perform for them in a hilarious prank by Pl>ymaker FC…

The 27-year-old, who has won 34 caps for Norway, made just eight appearances in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt, and was on the winning side twice, in a shock win over Liverpool and a 2-1 victory over Swansea City.

Elabdellaoui also played 90 minutes on the final day of the season, as Hull lost 7-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.

Just for depth?

Previous showings do not bode well for Southampton, here.

His last performance in English football saw his side ship seven goals, and this may merely be a move for a back-up.

Elabdellaoui has been almost ever-present for Olympiacos this season, missing just one Turkish Super League game, but his history in English football is such that it is difficult to foresee him being thrown straight in by manager Hasenhuttl.

Valery has impressed when given the chance to play at St Mary’s and can only benefit from an extended run in the first-team, regardless of transfers.

Hasenhuttl would be wise to place his faith in the 19-year-old, and use Elabdellaoui as little more than cover.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are fuming with Adam Reach’s showing vs Millwall

[ad_pod ]

Steve Bruce’s opening to life as Sheffield Wednesday manager has been underwhelming and predictable so far, as was the case on Tuesday night.

Bruce is unbeaten after recording one win and two draws, but a distinct lack of firepower and creativity have given supporters plenty of cause for concern.

A return of just one goal from three very winnable games is exactly the type of blunt record which riles up supporters, so it’s no surprise that they have turned on one of their more creative-minded players in light of their 0-0 draw with Millwall.

Indeed, the Owls faithful have taken to Twitter to slate Adam Reach for his latest showing, although it must be considered that he was deployed on the right-wing rather than in his preferred position on the left.

Supporters have slated his predictability and ineffective display and suggested that the early season hype surrounding his development was misplaced.

If the reaction to his latest performance on social media is anything to go by, Bruce may well need to consider moving him back to the left side of midfield to help the 26-year-old  rediscover his electric best form that saw him score goal and after goal from outside the penalty area.

Here’s what a handful of Wednesday fans had to say about Fletcher’s performance on Tuesday night:

The Chalkboard: Bielsa and Leeds dropped a pressing master-class against Swansea

[ad_pod ]

Leeds put in a vintage Marcelo Bielsa performance to return to the summit of the Championship on Wednesday, and a couple of unique stats show exactly how they did it.

Leeds have lost five times in all competitions since the seven-game winning spree that catapulted them clear at the top of the table, but they returned to top spot on Wednesday night.

The Whites beat Swansea 2-1 courtesy of goals from Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison, and Norwich’s 3-1 defeat at Preston leaves Bielsa’s side one point clear at the top.

While some of the play with the ball on Wednesday night was stunning, the team’s work off the ball was what really made the difference, and the stats show that Swansea will be having nightmares about this trip for quite some time.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

On the chalkboard

Much has been made of Bielsa’s “pressing”, and there have even been suggestions that the Argentine’s rigorous training methods are responsible for the club’s injury woes, but Wednesday night showed exactly what happens when the system works.

According to LUFCDATA, Swansea boast the highest pass accuracy in the league this season at 82.2 per cent, but managed to complete just 77 per cent of their passes at Elland Road.

The Swans have only recorded a lower passing percentage than this on four other occasions this season, and only once in a defeat (76 per cent vs Derby).

According to Whoscored, Bielsa’s side won 21 tackles in the match, nearly double the total (12) recorded by Graham Potter’s side, while the Swans were also dispossessed a whopping 16 times compared to just six for Leeds.

When considering that Leeds also had 61 per cent of the possession, the fact that they caused so many turnovers is remarkable, and a testament to Bielsa’s attention to detail.

Only the very best tacticians can achieve such an utterly dominant pressing performance, and if Leeds are fit enough to put in a shift like this 32 games into the season, it bodes very well for the rest of the campaign.

The Chalkboard: Chelsea must place their faith in Luiz against Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

Chelsea take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts will be considered favourites heading into the clash, but the Blues did beat Pep Guardiola’s side when they met at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, so Chelsea will know that they have what it takes to triumph on Sunday.

However, in order to take all three points back to west London, Maurizio Sarri must get his tactical approach to this fixture spot on.

On the chalkboard

In the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian, and January arrival Gonzalo Higuain, Chelsea have attacking players with the capacity to hurt City. However, in Brazilian centre-back David Luiz they also have something of a secret weapon.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The defender’s long-range passing ability from deep is remarkable, and he has the vision to pick out the runs of his attackers with accurate lofted balls over the top of the opposition defence. Therefore, Chelsea’s forwards must invest their faith in Luiz’s ability and repeatedly make the kind of runs in behind that he can pick out.

Working with Luiz

In order for Luiz to be at his most effective though, he must also be protected.

When Luiz is on the ball, City will press and pressurise him instantly. It is vital that the Chelsea man’s teammates are sharp in their own movements to ensure that the 31-year-old always has an option available to him.

What’s more, Sarri must also impress upon the 56-cap Brazil international the importance of not taking any unnecessary risks. Whilst Luiz has the capacity to unlock City, he is also capable of making poor errors. If he is to become central to Chelsea’s gameplan, then the Blues must be diligent in covering for Luiz when he strides forward to aid the attack.

Rodgers must look at bringing Ryan Christie to Leicester

Leicester City looked extremely impressive last time out against Brighton and Hove Albion as they secured a 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium with Brendan Rodgers watching on.

The Foxes will be desperate to enjoy a successful time of things under Rodgers after failing to ensure consistency at times during Claude Puel’s reign, with a European spot still in their sights.

Interestingly, it appears as if Midlands club have their sights on possibly securing a number of Celtic players in the summer, as according to The Times, Rodgers could raid his old club for Callum McGregor and James Forrest.

Indeed, securing the services of Forrest wouldn’t exactly be the most sensible of moves as the Foxes already have Demarai Gray, Marc Albrighton and Rachid Ghezzal. And, McGregor hasn’t exactly been able to live up to expectations in recent times at Parkhead, so the Premier League club would be better off looking at a different man.

One player who may be of interest to Rodgers is Ryan Christie, who is valued at £1.13 million (by Transfermarkt).

Christie has established himself as one of the shining lights in all competitions for the Hoops this season, having produced an impressive 10 goals and nine assists. The 24-year-old still has his best years ahead of him and he has Brendan Rodgers to thank for his rise to stardom in the current campaign.

So, with James Maddison currently operating in an attacking midfield role by himself, it would make sense for Rodgers to bring in another player who can provide goals and assists on a regular basis in the form of Christie. And, Rodgers will already know that he can get the best out of him in the Midlands, so it’s a no-brainer.

What do you think Leicester City fans?

Fan Predictions: Arsenal v Manchester United

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal host Manchester United on Sunday in what is surely a must-win game for both sides if they want to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The mood at Old Trafford is surely at its highest in recent memory after the Red Devils did the unthinkable in coming back from their first leg loss to PSG to progress to the Champions League last eight; Arsenal, meanwhile, fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Rennes on Thursday night.

The clash promises goals and, despite form indicating that United are the favourites, it will be anyone’s game. Speculating ahead of these heavyweight ties is often difficult as both teams are certainly capable of taking all three points – Football Fancast’s Arsenal apologist Will Jones and the TT’s resident Chelsea fan Alex Rigby are going to do their best, though.

Below they offer their predictions ahead of the huge game…

Both sides have been hit with lots of injuries this season but who do you think has had it worse?

Alex: “Probably not so much about who’s had it worse as who’s dealt with it better. Manchester United have shown these past few weeks that they’ve got the quality and guile to pull through anything, whereas Arsenal have been falling down with a fight. “

Will: “We’re missing some key men in Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin and Danny Welbeck, but when you look at the sheer number of first team stars that Manchester United had to cope without in their clash with PSG it’s hard to argue that injuries aren’t hitting them harder at the minute.

“The problem for Arsenal is that the Red Devils have a squad better equipped to cope with such a crisis, whereas Unai Emery is having to play Shkodran Mustafi at right-back when, of course, he probably shouldn’t be a professional footballer at all.”

Indeed, Bellerin’s non-appearance in particular has surely cost Arsenal in recent weeks – the Spaniard offers crucial width to the Gunners’ attack. Emery’s list of wounded might be few but the absences are still notable, particularly when, as Will says, an error-prone Mustafi is deployed on the right of defence in Bellerin’s stead.

At the other end of the spectrum, United’s injury list stretches into double figures – Solskjaer was without a number of big names on Wednesday, including Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Fortunately for the Red Devils, though, they have unbelievable strength in depth and, with Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford firing on all cylinders, they have been able to get results regardless.

Who should start up front in this game and why? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette?

Will: “Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is our top scorer and one of the most natural goal-getters in English football. However, he’s not himself at the minute. The late penalty miss against Spurs looks to have battered his confidence.

“The manager now has a tough call to make – does he play Aubameyang through this sticky patch or turn to Alexandre Lacazette? Personally, I’d opt for the Frenchman, and plan to bring on Aubameyang’s pace in the second half to stretch the tired opposition defence “

Alex: “Lacazette. Big game player who’s done tremendously well when he’s needed most.”

Few managers in the Premier League can attest to having two fantastic strikers to choose from – Emery can though. The Spaniard has ummed and ahhed between the two hitmen all season and both offer so much to the Gunners attack.

Aubameyang hit the ground running after signing from Borussia Dortmund and recently broke the record for the fastest Arsenal player to reach 25 Premier League goals, achieving the feat in just 37 games. Lacazette, however, took a little longer to get going but has now proved himself to be, as Alex says, a big game player.

The Gabonese forward’s pace is unrivalled and will cause the United defence plenty of problems while the Frenchman’s ability to operate in tight spaces will also make him a threat wherever he receives the ball. Whichever Emery opts for on Sunday, Chris Smalling and co have a difficult task on their hands.

Where are the key battles going to take place in this game?

Alex: “Arsenal’s back line surely. Big Romelu Lukaku absolutely bullied the Gunners in the FA Cup – recently enough for them to still be feeling it – and his performances against Southampton and PSG look like he’s not slowing anytime soon.”

Will: “Going forward there’s no doubt that Arsenal have the quality to hurt United. However, the likes of Rashford and the in-form Lukaku ought to be savouring the prospect of facing the Gunners’ rearguard on Sunday.

“They may struggle against Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny, but Emery’s full-backs have to step up. If the Red Devils repeatedly get the better of Arsenal on the flanks then the hosts could be in for a long afternoon.”

Lukaku’s midweek brace took his tally for the last three games to six, with the striker also hitting doubles against Southampton and Crystal Palace; Rashford scored his maiden penalty for United on Wednesday, too, in about as high pressure circumstances possible.

The pair are the epitome of confidence at the moment and have looked like men possessed under Solskjaer – they will certainly cause the Gunners defence all kind of problems and the entire back four will have to be on their best form to deal with them.

Solskjaer has revived the classic striker combination here – Rashford is the lightning to Lukaku’s thunder – and it will be fascinating to see how they contend with the recently impressive Sokratis and Koscielny.

Are Rashford and Lukaku currently the most dangerous duo in the Premier League, then?

Will: “Certainly, they’re in great form. However, I really do back Sokratis and Koscielny – who did a great job on Harry Kane recently – to make them toil. If Solskjaer’s forwards can get into the channels though, and exploit the space inside the full-backs, then Bernd Leno will have to be at his best to keep them out.”

Alex: “Short one – yes. Not often you see two strikers nowadays, but Solskjaer has channelled his inner Ferguson and made it work. Both look like they’re enjoying each other’s company.”

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

Front threes tend to be all the rage in the modern game, with two-striker approaches largely limited to the teams with considerably more stringent budgets and resources.

Such is the form of Lukaku and Rashford that one expects United’s wingers – Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez – will have a tough time earning minutes once they return to fitness and they should have no complaints.

Finally, what’s your score prediction?

Alex: “2-0 United.”

Will: “2-1. A measured prediction based on Arsenal’s home advantage or blind, desperate optimism? Your call.”

Suso would be perfect Ozil replacement

Arsenal will be gutted with their recent result against BATE Borisov in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie, as they failed to come away from Belarus with an away goal.

The Gunners find themselves trailing in the race for a top four spot and their European hopes are in doubt after their midweek result, so things definitely need to improve immediately.

However, it looks as if the North London club already have their eye on a possible summer swoop, as according to Corriere dello Sport (via Metro), Arsenal have held talks to sign AC Milan’s Suso.

Interestingly, the Spaniard is said to have a €40 million (£35m/$45m) release clause in his deal at the San Siro.

Suso has come on leaps and bounds since moving to Italy as he continues to make a name for himself, with six goals and eight assists to his name at this moment in time. The attacker operated as more of a winger during his time at Liverpool but he’s been playing more centrally in recent times, which has certainly benefited him.

One player who the Gunners may be desperate to replace is Mesut Ozil as his future looks extremely uncertain as he continues to waste away behind the scenes at the Emirates.

The Gunners have reportedly identified Kai Havertz as the man they want to replace Mesut Ozil, according to Calciomercato (via The Sun). But, the youngster has very little experience and still has a lot of developing to do, so Arsenal would be better off moving for a ready-made replacement who could step right into the side and excel.

Indeed, Suso is a ready-made replacement for the German as he’s shown that he can provide an impressive amount of assists and he also has the ability to find the back of the net, which Ozil has struggled to do. And, he has experience from playing in Europe, which could come in handy in the future at the Emirates.

His skill, pace, dribbling and finishing ability makes him one of the most talented attackers in Italy, and he’d fit perfectly into the Gunners’ tiki-taka style with his passing and quickness taking Arsenal’s attack to another level.
